93 SR Hatch build in the Mitten State

Thought I would post a bit about my build now that i have a premium account :) I am 23 and Im a graphic designer in Michigan. I just graduated from GVSU in December and wanted to pick up a new project car after my previous love was totaled- 99 Toyota Solara:

The car was supercharged at 6 psi, put down about 254 whp. Did the first black interior swap into a Solara complete with defi gauges and sparco torino seats/ 4 pt harnesses. I loved everything about it, but I got rear ended and insurance totaled the car. I got a good chunk of cash from mods and insurance, but I wanted to get something a bit cheaper with more potential and RWD. I picked this car up on election day:

The car wasnt all bad and the chassis was rust free- something really rare up here in the midwest. The body seemed to be pretty clean as well, just some very slight rust starting on the bottoms of the A pillars. Mostly the car just needed a lot of TLC. The previous owner didnt have time for the car anymore with a wife and kids, so it had pretty much just been sitting for the past few years. I saw a lot of potential and decided to give it a shot.

I drove the car and enjoyed the power for about two weeks until I left the lights on and killed the battery. At some point int he jumping process, we are fairly sure that one of my friends must have tuched the cables in reverse and fried something. The car wouldnt turn over and had no power. I found that the alternator fuse had blown. Upon replacing it the car got power again, but still wouldnt turn over. Starter was good, etc, so my wiring nightmare began after a lot of troubleshooting.

I still dont have the car started, but I have a good friend with a lot of SR experience, as well as wiring expertise, that has been helping me out as we have time. In the mean time, I have began to fix a lot of the things that were half assed with the car. This is about how it sits right now:

The first thing I did was get a front bumper and have it painted, so I dont have to ride around without a front end...

Here is a pic of the interior project beginning. This was a few weeks ago- since then I have removed about 80% of the sound deadening. Im hoping to have the rest removed by sometime next week. The dash and center console have been pulled since this picture as well:

The car is just chillin in my grandpa's garage for the winter. Sold the SE wheels since I am going 5 lug anyway, so those are now gone. I pulled the fenders to hammer them back for tire clearance and to relocate the wiring harnesses:

Well, we got the car to fire up yesterday and it runs great! Im going to install my brakes and 5 lug conversion this weekend, then start on putting the interior all back together. Good to finally hear the car running again!

Well, we made some progress last night. Got all of the old crappy stock brakes removed from all four corners and got the front 4 lug hubs removed. I did not have a large enough socket for the rear hubs, so I will have to pick one up today after work. I started to remove the RUCAs and other alignment parts in the rear to install my SPC components that came yesterday, but called it a night before I finished the removal.

I ran into a snag with my front Wilwood kit that I purchased from another zilvia member. The front rotors look like they were designed for another vehicle and had small metal spacers pushed into the stud holes to make them fit. However, they do not slip over the ichiba hubs and I am afraid they will damage the studs if I try to push them on. On top of that, one of the spacers is missing. Long story short, these are too jenky for me to try to mess with. I will have to come up with another front rotor solution and go from there.

Made some progress yesterday. Not as much as I hoped, but still not bad. I got all of the suspension pieces broken loose on both sides and removed everything from the driver's side. I am now trying to get the spindle off of the car so that I can remove the old 4 lug hub. The bolts are on so tight that I think removing the whole spindle from the car will be the only way to get the 4 hub bolts loose. All that is holding me up is the balljoint- Im not sure if I can just hammer this off or if I need a specific tool to remove it:

The hub bolt on the other side is still being stubborn, so I am going to have a friend bring his torch and air tools out soon to help me remove it. I tore a CV boot when trying to remove the spindle, so I am just going to install the VLSD and axles that the previous owner gave me with the car. At this point, with so much torn apart, I might drop the subframe and do the bushings as well. Always better to get everything done right the first time if possible, so that might be the best route. A little nervous because I have never dropped a subframe before, but I might just go for it.

I also removed the 4 hub bolts from the hub to the spindle, but I am not sure how to seperate them. My friend told me I will need a press, but I have not confirmed that yet. Ill search around the forum some more to see what I can find out.

Got some stuff on the way to get this thing all back together and on the road:

Energy Suspension Subframe bushings (backordered for 2 weeks)
OEM Radiator Mounts/Hardware (to install koyo)
Circuit Breaker (for battery relocation)
GReddy oil filter relocation kit
Rays Aluminum lug nuts (black)

I still need to order front brakes, since I sold the Wilwood kit I had, and do something about the bad balljoint I have. After some research, I found that Nissan doesn't sell just the rear balljoints for this car, only the lower arm with the balljoint already pressed in. You can use some from a sentra, but I think Im going to go with the whole arm... I read a couple of tutorials and it looks like a joke to do.

I am pulling the valve cover to be done wrinkle red tonight. I think it will look pretty sick with the time attacks.

Interior:
I think I am going to try to install my carpeting and get the dash back in as well tonight. I will run the wiring for my Defi gauges and the link controller. Im just going to put as much of the interior back in as I can while I wait on the CDM seatbelt conversion.

Suspension:
Got that pesky rear hub bolt loose with the help of a friend, a torch, and a thick steel bar last night. This allowed me to pull all of the arms and whatnot on that side last night, as well as the axles. Have to remove the spindle from that side, then get the hubs swapped to the 5 luggers.

Drivetrain:
I am going to drop the diff if I can tonight or tomorrow. I have a JDM/CDM VLSD that came with the car, along with 5 bolt axles. I was going to buy a nicer LSD, but I decided to save the cash for now and rock this one- it should be sufficient for my needs. Pretty sure I have to swap the diff covers, so I will change the fluid as well when I do that.

Anyway, slow progress as always. Going to get a formulated list going and start knocking things out, I want this thing cruising out of the garage by the end of April!

When you drop the subframe, but a jack under the diff, it's pretty well balanced around it, although the front is a little heavier, but it's really no big deal. It's much more of a pain to get it back in.

You should check out the Megan Racing roll center adjuster ball joints. I don't normally recommend Megan Racing anything to anyone, but they're really the only ones that make them right now. They're $168 for a pair, which is cheaper than complete arms.

You'd probably want to do all four, but they're due for replacement in any S13 anway, so why not? It can only help.

Yeah, I did see those, but I feel the same way... not sure I want to rock the megan stuff, haha. I might only need a balljoint on one side, but it would probably be best to do both at once. Arms are about $240 shipped, so megan would be a cheaper option. I like the idea of not having to press anything in or mess with it.

I went with stances on my coupe and liked them alot. Pretty harsh on ohio/michigan roads when slammed but if you softened it up a bit it was tollerable for moderate periods of time.

hey thanks man, the car has some old school tein HEs on it now. They seem pretty low mileage and in good shape, so Im gonna stick with those as long as they go low enough, which I think they should.

I started putting the interior back together tonight, exciting to see it starting to look like a car again! I trimmed the new carpet and got it in along with the dash, carpet is about 85% trimmed (crap pics AGAIN, so sorry haha):

Well, I test fitted my corbeau FX1 seat with buddy club super low rail yesterday, but unfortunately it still sits really high. I am almost hitting my head and there is no way I would fit with a helmet, so Im not sure what I am going to do. At this point I dont care much about cost, I just really want a seat that feels good and sits low enough. Not sure what I am going to end up going with, update soon...

IIRC that seat is a bottom mount... check out some of the Sparco and Recaro seats. There is a group buy on them right now. Most of their seats are side mounts. They're likely to be lower.

it's actually bottom or side mount, which is how I have it bolted to a side mount bracket right now ;) If you look at corbeau's website, it explains that the seat can be side or bottom mounted. I will check out the group buy though for sure, thanks!

I know what you mean. I'm 6'1 and have about a 100 pounds on you. I can barely fit in there with a helmet on and a stock seat. Kind of have to do the head cocked thing.

haha, yeah I can fit into some pretty skinny seats, but the head room with aftermarket seats in this car is killing me. With my solara, I dropped in corbeau cr1, sparco tornios, and a bride fixed back with bottom mount rails and I dropped a good 3". You couldnt even see my shoulder from the side of the car, haha. I guess that was because I started out with old lady seats... oh well.

In other news, I think i have decided to go with Q45 calipers, ss lines, brembo blanks, and hawk hps pads for the front of the car. I really wanted to do wilwoods, but I dont really plan to track the car aside from an autocross or two, so i dont think i need to spend the money.

If you're just going to street the car, I say just go with SS lines and good pads. You don't want to mess up the brake balance for emergency stops.

Everything is removed to drop the diff and rear subframe, just going to take some wiggling. The bushings are smoked, so I am glad I am replacing them. Might as well do swaybars while they are off as well. I also ordered a Nagisa rail, should be here next week and I can bolt the seat up. I will have new pics up by monday, hopefully with the subframe completely removed.

Havent updated in a bit, but things are coming together. I picked up some new fluid for the VLSD and plan to change that this weekend, as well as get it cleaned up and painted. My seat rail came last night, so Im bolting it all up tonight. My 180sx tails come today as well, brake rotors for the fornt show up tomorrow. I have been super busy, but set aside lots of time this weekend to make it happen. New pics with progress will be up by sunday night!

I don't know if you want to do sway bars. If you have coils then you usually don't need them.

Here is some crap I did tonight... drained both diffs and pulled the covers (pretty sure I need to use the open diff cover to run the vlsd, but I am not positive.) I also had the kind of fun but very smelly task of burning the bushings from my subframe, arms, and spindles. Tomorrow I have to cut out all of the metal inserts and prep everything for paint, maybe spray some if we get time.

Unfortunately, my subframe bushings do not fit :( they are too small and fall out of the subframe. I guess when people say that they fit s14 and s13, that might not be true. I am ordering some SPL aluminum ones tonight, so hopefully it wont take long and we can get this party started!

Here are some pics from today- I got all of the other bushings pressed in and repainted the spindles, arms, and subframe. I also clear coated the hatch, just needs some wetsanding action. I also mocked up the front lip, just need to bolt the bumper on and mount it for real. It is coming along quickly and smoothly now!!

yep, wrinkle red powdercoat. Not the most original in the world I suppose, but I like how it came out! I ordered SPL Aluminum subframe bushings and they are back ordered for 3-4 days, so it sounds like they will show up mid to late next week. Can't wait to get it back on the ground and slammed.

Yeah thanks man, I have a buddy on the west side who just installed them and told me it isnt bad at all, so not TOO worried. Would have liked to rock the energy bushings, but didnt know I had to leave those collars in... oh wells.

lol damn... what a bummer. I was considering pickup up a nicer seat, like a recaro pole position, but I think it is going to be the same deal... I am about 6'1", so it isn't TOO bad. I gain a couple of inches in clearance if I rock without the seat cushion, which would suck for long drives but I don't think would bother me at autocross or something.

Well I managed to get one of the stubborn subframe inserts off tonight. It twas a great victory after about 12 dremel cutting bits :lol:

Can't believe how corroded these were... would not budge for anything. The funny thing is the two rear bushings slid right off effortlessly.

Also spray bombed and cleaned up the diff cover and VLSD. Realized I need a 5 bolt axle, so hunting that down right now. I ordered a new Diff gasket, some random screws I need, hardware to bolt the bumper on, and a new seal for the cowl/hood with clips. Also waiting on my tein spanner wrenches to adjust the coils, and all of the gaskets for the intake manifold install.

These are the 110mm and I wanted the 80mm, so I think I am going to sell these and keep looking. Hard to find the right ones since these gauges are discontinued.

Working on the car tonight, going to try to get the intake install and oil pressure relocation done... just try to get the bay together as much as I can. Kumho screwed up my order at Discount Tire, so I have some Yokohama S drives on the way- should be here next Monday or Tuesday and then I can get the car on the ground!

Got some things done yesterday... front SS brake lines, oil filter relocation, a lot of the front lip install, but not totally on yet. Sprayed undercoating the the wheel wells to freshen it up a bit, rolled the rear fenders, put the catback back on, mocked up the rear wheels and tires while I wait for coils again to check the roll, repainted the hatch and got it a lot glossier (thanks Aria).

It took me quite a while to get everything tightened up in the back and get the camber set decent. It still needs to be adjusted on one side in the rear. The rear will come up about 3/4"-1" and the front will come down about an inch. I just had a really long, failure day and decided to get some shut eye.

I found boost and oil temp on ebay about a year ago, a friend that owned a shop gave me the oil pressure gauge for helping him with his car, then I picked up water temp and fuel pressure used locally.

I also have a 110mm tach if you would be interested, I have been trying to unload it because I don't have any use for it.

Well, here is another mockup. The rear valence I got for this side is a dark green, so I didn't have to alter it in photoshop any- all I touched was the side skirt (made it black). I think it is going to look good, but I want the center section to go across the rear now.

Made some progress yesterday- I moved my boost controller and turbo timer to the center console (instead of laying on the gauge cluster and flying in my face every time I get on it, haha), put my steering column cover back on, installed the cf hatch, fixed my turn signals, and rewrapped my glove box with black fabric:

The fitment was about 7.5/10, so I can't complain... will probably fiddle with the alignment more next week. I still need to install the third brake light as well.

Yeah, the intercooler didn't even tough the ground I don't think. I hit a big dip/bump/crater in the road that didn't look too bad and heard a loud noise- when i got home, I realized the top bracket mounting the intercooler core to the chassis had snapped. The metal broke right at the hole where the bolt passes through. Could be welded or repaired, but a good opportunity to get a GReddy kit from 240sx Motoring before they were gone, so I went for it.

I still need to install the GReddy lower hot pipe, but it has a piece on it for the stock SR BOV that needs to be removed and welded over. The pipe is pretty much the same anyway. Maybe I will do a GReddy hot pipe in the future to match, but I don't need it at this point. I put all of the new couplers and clamps on, so no more leaks and no more pipes popping! It feels like a totally different car- it is so nice to not have to baby it worrying about popping the hot pipe off.

I also picked up another goodie from a friend last night- S14 passenger seat. I got the pair of them, but I am only going to install the passenger seat and keep my Corbeau in there. Bye bye, nasty smelly s13 seat!

I started working on the car tonight for the first time in a while. I thought that the studs on the exhaust manifold were broken, so I started to pull the intake and other bits to prepare for the T28 install. As I got the intake out of the way, I realized that the four bolts on the manifold had only vibrated loose, and nothing was broken. This was very good news, since I thought I needed a new manifold and would have the car off of the road for quite some time. Now I can just go buy a nut to replace the one I lost, tighten things up, and enjoy the car for the rest of the season.

I removed the carbon hood and hatch tonight. I have interest in both pieces, but haven't met with anyone to make the sales yet. I really liked the carbon and wouldn't mind at least keeping the hatch, but I have spent a lot on the new setup and it would be nice to recoup a good chunk of that. The hatch needs to be painted since it is just spray bombed, so I will probably have that done this winter.

I started working on the H4 conversion and got one of the headlights on, but the screws were rusty and stripped on the passenger side and I did not have my dremel with me, so I will have to finish that up and do the wiring later this week. I also purchased an Apexi Power FC to tune the new setup with. I think that I am going to have Monkey Wrench dial it in for me when the car is up and running, since I have heard good things about Matt from another SR 240 owner. The FC is on the way, but here is a pic the seller sent me:

I also got some valuable info from the previous owner this week. He told me that a Walbro 255 fuel pump is already installed, so that has been checked off of the parts list. He also said that he had the stock turbo manifold ported and coated by some place here in Michigan, so that is a lot of work and cost out of my way. I am going to check it out when I remove it to look at the craftsmanship and if it looks legit, I will paint it and reinstall it with a heat shield. If it doesn't look all that great, I will probably get a Tomei manifold.

So anyway, the car will be back on the road in a couple of days. I am going to turn the boost up to 10 (I have been running 8 since I got the car) and enjoy it for the rest of the summer. Then, the major engine bay overhaul will begin...

Quality looks great to me, they even put the fire sleeving on the lines. And yes, I bought the one with a restrictor.

I decided to change up my gauge setup a bit. I had a set of 5 white face defi link gauges, 52mm. 3 are installed and 2 are chilling in a box. I found these 60mm black face gauges on Zilvia today, so I snatched them up and plan to sell my white ones:

The white gauges were left from my Solara and looked great in a white car, but I prefer the black face for the 240.

Going with full kouki 180sx aero. Front bumper with OEM lip, center rear valence piece, and kouki wing are on the way. Side skirts will be purchased soon and if all goes well, the car will get a fresh coat of OEM black paint in the spring. Should be a fun winter... I'll keep everyone posted!

I had the cf hatch on from about June to September... I sold it to fund the new turbo setup (and by "fund" I mean keep the wife happy, lol). I really liked it a lot, it was a sweet piece... the only thing I didn't like was not having the struts back there- that got kind of old pretty fast. Carbon on black was hit or miss for me too... my car just wasn't clean enough to pull it off IMO.

The guy could have only had it in for a month, but was a cheap drifter, fuel sloshing the car all over with no gas in the tank. Those walboros overheat really fast, and break even faster.

So if you don't know that you did it, I wouldn't risk the engine on it, especially with a turbo upgrade on the way.

Z32TT OEM fuel pump is a little pricey but almost indestructible with more flow than you need.

And thanks for the advice on the fuel pump- I was considering replacing it anyway with a hard wire kit just to be safe. It is probably a few years old now, so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to replace it. I know the car wasn't drifted and was rarely driven before I bought it, but it would be cheap insurance for sure.

I bought it from a member in Ohio. I was in contact with Speed Alliance about buying one new before I found mine, and it sounds like they can still get them (this was about a year ago). The price they gave me back then was $375 shipped with a 2-4 week wait time. Not sure if that has changed or not, but try shooting them an email.

I actually worked on the car a bit last night! started pulling the turbo, intercooler piping, etc. I'm glad that the car is finally in the garage and not sitting outside anymore. I started pulling the fenders as well, since mine are pretty dented/cracked and I have some replacements going on, but I didn't finish that because I didn't have room to open the doors enough. :lol: I'll have to wait a bit longer to do that.

I knew I would score props on Zilvia for the kouki thing... it's Nico and the local forums that hate it, haha. I'd love to do a little more flush/stretch/fitment, but with the new turbo setup in the spring I don't really want to go skinnier than a 245/40 like I have been rocking out back. I already burned through those in about 10k miles this summer, so I can't imagine a 225 out back with more power. I'd love to sit it down and run skinnier tires, but the power side of me won't let me at this point.

HKS Acuator, Work CR Kai Decals and blue aluminum lug nuts, Peak Performance Street transmission mount, and Cusco engine mounts. I'm going to work on cleaning/tearing the bay apart more and cleaning up the motor tomorrow, so I'll post some more pics if I make decent progress. I'm also going to drop off the two wheels with curb rash/ very slight bends to a wheel shop to have them repaired, then I am going to have all 4 of them painted.

I've never really pulled/dropped a motor in before, so that was pretty cool. :) I'm sure it will be a lot more of a pain going back in, haha. Updates should be coming along at least weekly now!

2 Wheels are in the shop being repaired, should be out tomorrow or Wednesday. My D Max floor mats will be here today after waiting since July, canceling my order last week, and ordering them from another vendor. FINALLY! I'll post pics when I get home tonight.

I am going to order some parts this week... I think I will replace the water pump while the motor is out, and do a Nismo thermostat as well. The 180 front end was supposed to leave Japan in mid-December, so I sent an email on the status of that as well. I bought an AEM Wideband, but just filed a paypal claim after waiting a month for that. Sigh... I hate scammers.

I'm hoping to finish cleaning up the motor this week and start bolting some of the goodies on. I am still trying to decide if I want to stick with the Tomei turbo elbow/GReddy downpipe combo I have now, or pony up for a PBM Cobra downpipe. I like the one piece design, flex pipe section, and bung for a wideband sensor... so we'll see.

Wheels will be going in for paint next week I hope- any suggestions for color? I am thinking about just sticking with the gloss gray/silver they are now...

I also got onto the Speed Hunters deal, which was not really a major accomplishment, but still felt pretty cool. lol. Just purchased an ACT StreetLite flywheel from another member today, so that should be here this week too. More pics and updates soon...

I am also considering a timing CHAIN (lol) replacement, but again- it depends on what kind of condition it is in and how far I want to take it. I have never really worked with the inside of an engine before, so that makes me a bit hesitant. Cams would be awesome, but it opens up a whole can of worms and additional cost. We'll see what happens...

Tomei + Greddy sounds like a better combo. PBM stuff is only really necessary if you're going to be unnecessarily low.

That may be true. I blew the gasket between my turbo and manifold last fall because of the catback piping scraping the ground. I am not even very low, so I wanted to address that issue. With the Tomei manifold on there as well, I really want to have the flex section to hopefully keep it from cracking- even though it does have a brace with it.

The exhaust setup on the car right now is what came with it when I bought it. In the spring, I will be running the Tomei Manifold, Cobra Downpipe, test pipe, and a D-Max ground clearance catback, which will be here tomorrow. With that stuff and the CS poly exhaust bushings I got, everything should tuck up pretty nice and I won't have to worry as much.

So I sold the exhaust that came with my car (since it was pretty beat up) and scored a D-Max exhaust for more ground clearance- not to mention I got it new for a CRAZY price from RavSpec:

I finished up assembly of my GReddy Manifold this weekend- painted the fuel rail, caps, FPR, and throttle body. I also used allen head stainless hardware to freshen things up and get rid of the phillips head screws. And of course, new throttle body and IACV gaskets.

It was very fun to drive on the highway,but was a little laggy on the street. Until one day when I drove Dave's coupeTouge Factory Dave).He had a HKS 2530. It felt a lot faster and swell balanced. That's when I decided to balance everything on my car: weigh, power, handling... That's what it comes to at the end. You want a car that takes your breath away everyday when you drive it.

No problem, I appreciate hearing feedback like that! Honestly, I would have gone with a slightly larger turbo if I had the money, but I wanted to keep things a little cheaper. That way, I could spend the money I saved on other parts of the build.

At this point, the car STILL feels really fast to me every time I drive it. After switching from a fwd car that weighed about 3300 lbs and made 250whp, the 240 is a totally different experience. I think the GT28R will still keep a smile on my face for a long time to come. I know, I know- it only lasts so long before we want more, lol. I appreciate the feedback though, that's good to know!

I made 300 WHP on a preliminary tune at 6000 with the HKS GT2530.

All I need is the tach, which is kinda pricey- $150. The fuel gauge and speedometer are like $45 each. Materials to make it shouldnt be TOO much if I do it myself, but I'm not sure what Broadfield would charge me to build one. His would be more perfect than anything I could make, but not sure how much I want to pay. This will be a summer project.

Funny, the "Tomei Expreme" little plate fell off on my mani too. Had a few problems with craking on mine last season aswell so look out for that.

Correct, I'm pretty sure I did get the nuts and studs from FR Sport. Bummer to hear about manifold cracking. Hopefully I have taken enough precautions to avoid it. Luckily, I got a great deal on the manifold- it would really suck if I paid full price for it and it cracked!

And yeah, I have seen a lot of pretty heavily modified SR cars running the clutch fan and shroud. I actually almost like the look better with the shroud as well, but not that it matters haha. I still need to pick up an oem shroud, I'm waiting for them to come in.

Well, I got two of the 17" Works sold and ordered two 18x9.5 +12s for the rear. Work USA was out of them in every color, but they should be coming in on the March container from Japan. As soon as they show up, I will have those painted with the repaired 17x9 +17 fronts so that they all match. Still leaning towards silver, but not sure yet. I also ordered tires on Thursday: Dunlops- 225/45/18 R, 215/45/17 F. Bring on the hate.

I dropped my head off at Ann Arbor Auto Machine on Thursday to be decked and have everything checked out/cleaned up. That should hopefully be back in a day or two and I can start reassembling the motor.

As for parts, my GReddy oil pan and Defi 80mm tach should be here any day now. I had NissanParts.cc order me a pair of Tomei Poncams and a Tomei coil pack cover, but I'm not sure when those will be in. As soon as I source a stock gauge cluster to gut and order my fuel level/speedometer gauges, I plan to send it all out to Toby (a.k.a. Broadfield) to build me the shell for my custom cluster. It should hopefully look like this:

I have considered it, but I don't want it to be less than perfect. I'm sure I could figure it out and make it look halfway decent, but I really want it to be flawless. I am all about doing it yourself, but I'm going to leave that one up to the man himself I think. :)

Shop still isn't done with the head... they said it will hopefully be ready tomorrow or Friday. I'd love to have it before the weekend so that I can get as much of the motor back together as possible.
