k YES, before u say anything I HAVE DONE my SEARCH on sr20dets in socal..... but in reality, I hear how lots of people on campuses still rock sr20dets, and MANY MANY people rocking them in socal...yet on forums i hear these REF stories..... is it worth it running a sr20det? its tempting to trade my zenki for this kouki with a sr20det.... also i see many people selling their koukis with sr20dets and i want to buy....but if anyone has the real info on sr20dets in socal hit me up. First off, Think about it. Nobody is going to post a thread saying how they didn't get pulled over with a SR. Like you mentioned, there are plenty of people who are running SRs in socal who don't get pulled over but it all depends on certain things.

What area do you live in? Are 240s a common sight in this area?
How are the cops in this area?
How are your driving habits? Can you control the urge to hit boost every street light or onramp?
Is your car flashy? (aggressive aero, big wheels, loud exhaust)

It's not that the sr is gunna get you caught with cops, it's the other shit then they ask to pop your hood. Ie. slammed and loud exhaust. If you don't drive like a dick and it's not a flashy car then you're probably not gunna get anything. So it's all on you, not the engine.

this happens to me all the time. its all on the area. where I am at cops are super bored and will do this all day for any mod. my neighbor got pulled over in his wifes prius cause he believed the tail lights were after market. my neighbor kindly pointed to one that passed, after he argued with the cop that they were from the factory. the cop saw that the tail lights were indeed from the factory and that he was an idiot and left.

Honestly they dont know what they are looking at. And if they were cool enough to know, they'd think that you are pretty badass and give you Props.

The no's:
-Loud/big mufflers usually gets you pulled over the most.
-Dont break any rules such as speeding, running red lights, etc...
-Shiny things in your engine bays, BOVs, FMIC piping, etc..
-Stickers, dont cover your front windshield with stickers, its illegal, and they Will pull you over for it. A few small ones is probably Ok.


The yes':
-Stock body, OEM lip, skirts, valences, etc...
-Stock exhaust
-SR20 with a black top/or painted black valve covers with stock engine piping and SMIC
-license plates in the right places
-and so on....

Everyday the cops are getting smarter. Cops in Orange County are all being trained to spot modified engines. They even have a picture book of which motors are supposed to be in which chassis.

My friend works for Garden Grove PD, and he pulls over modified cars all day long because he knows EXACTLY what to look for. However, he is pretty fair to people who are courteous and polite, and will let them go. But if he thinks you might be a problem in the future, he will teach you a lesson.

I've been pulled over many times in my car (with aerokit, flashy wheels, and exhaust), and I've been fortunate to have been let go (most of the time). Regardless of what people are telling you, there will always be a risk of police citing you for everything, and even possibly taking away your car.

^^^^^I agree with him, I just got off my ref ticket from that one night at autobacs and man it was a headach because two days later I blew a fucking bearing. But they ref me for my DC headers though and loud exhaust. Wack! But got the motor rebuild just kept the intake but no headers just dippin low and clean and thats cool for me right now. By the why I don't know if it was you but a couple weeks ago i think I saw on the 710n and you roll up on me I was rolling in the gold 240. Nice whip and your car was really quite and low. Pimp!!!!

Handling, aero and agressive wheel is a must have for me, SR and KA-T just give me more trouble also toss more money into the car. I recommand save your money for better car like Z, G35, WRX, S2000 or EVO.

Of course people have got their cars impounded. downshift_sideways had his impounded and had to pay like $2300 to get it out. The REF ticket alone is $371. Sure, having a beat ass car helps, but I know a guy with a beat ass car that still got pulled over. I swear by this... It all depends on the officer. I've had people in my area with slammed cars, fender flares, stickers, and crazy exhausts that have gotten pulled over and not even had their hood popped. Mine isn't so crazy, and I've had my hood popped every time I've been pulled over. Do you think people just make these stories up for the hell of it?

I take a lot of trips to LA and back and I just drive 70 mph all the way home, CHP would pass me would just look at me, ill just smile and wave, and they will go on there way. It can get pricey but you can buy a longblock for 900 bucks and buy most of the rest used and have it rebuilt for about that price you posted. But most SR's only have like 50 thousand HARD miles on them anyway when they get here.

You do know that cops give tickets for lowering car's too, and I've seen video's of your drifting while watching groundhog day, you know you can get a ticket for that working with your e-brake down right?

First off, you don't like people spreading false information about safety 21 cages and cusco cages being bolt in death traps, please don't spread false information about cars getting impounded for having engine swaps they're not supposed to.

A cop can only impound the car if you're under the influence and not at a legal bac to drive, if your car is not properly registered and insured, or if you have a suspended license, OR if your dash vin doesn't match the firewall vin... It's pretty common place that engines need to be replaced in cars especially 10 year old cars so most of the time the serial number on the engine doesn't even matter unless it is on record that it has been stolen. They have no proof to verify the engine in your car is legit or not, even if you have paperwork for it.

But it is still not a means for them to tow your car away.

As far as sending you to the state ref... read above, they send people to the ref because they do not know what to look for or may be unsure your motor is even legal, I know people with stock motors that have been reffed...

People want to be cool and run straight pipes on their car, that's an instant ref ticket. Throw a cat on your shit and they will give you a break for the most part.

Pulled over intoxicated, driving 15 miles over the limit 5 in the morning in a highly modified vehichle hasn't been legally registered for 6 months and not insured... I rarely never took that car out and the night I did I got popped. And luckily I got away with a speeding ticket and had to walk home and lock my car up. But it was not towed or impounded.

Not bragging either but cops are not the enemy. It's the dumbshits who go street drifting, and racing and getting busted doing it fucking it up for us and making us a target. I don't even know how the San Diego guys even grow balls enough to put tint on their cars...

There are some SRs making 128hp-213hp at the wheels (http://www.driveline.net.au/gallery.php?gallery_id=26). It doesnt make super duper power out the box if that is what you were thinking or implying. KA24DEs make about 155hp at the crank. Below is a dyno sheet of a KA24DE with just HotShot headers and an Injen intake making 152hp (im assuming at the wheels):

Like its been said time and time again...you take a risk in doing any type of illegal mods. My friend had a 93 240sx coupe w/ SR20DET with a whole bunch of goodies installed in it and never got pulled over at all. It was his daily too and a super clean one at that. Only reason he doesnt have it anymore is because he sold it for way more than what he put into it. Sometimes people are just at the wrong place at the wrong time and sometimes people are just asking for it doing stupid shit...but cops do know what to look for and if they dont, they'll call someone who does (in SD anyways). So be safe and cautious everyone. The state budget is messed up and that gives them more of a reason to pull you over...easy ticket and easy money for the state to collect.

i think if you are caught with an SR in san diego, it's an automatic impound. no crushing of your car, that i know of.

but in ontario, if you are caught "speed contesting on public roads", then your car is crushed, no questions asked.

Changing lanes in an intersection is LEGAL, as long as it's claer - it's in the same category as turning left... if you change lanes into someone else who's turning right into your lane (from a cross street) its your fault. If you change lanes into someone else who was speeding, it's your fault. Et cetera.

Believe it or not, that's by far the most helpful thing I can contribute to this thread. Yes, there are risks. My theory is that by having the rest of your vehicle legal (lights, registration, insurance, driver's license, exhaust quiet, no crazy tint), you can drive it around and not get popped.

So far this has worked fairly well for me - the only time I got my hood popped was driving with an expired tag.
