How many of you guys have rebuild ur turboes, is it necessary for "the shop" to do it? i mean, i assume its just remove and replace?
Not really feeling 300 bucks to rebuild a turbo if its something i could possibly do myself.
Alrighty, throw some opinions and suggestions at me guys:wackit:

well i dont know if you know but you can't rebuilt ball bearing turbos. but its is pretty simple if you know what you are doing. is it a t25?

It all depends on what turbo...I've rebuilt a Garret T04S and the rebuilt kit only costed me $75.

rebuilding a turbo is a piece of cake, just make sure that you get the turbo balanced or mark it and put the exhaust and intake turbine exactly where they were

Its a ball bearing Turbo you cannot rebuild it.
You need to buy a new center section

i have rebuilt 2 t25 myself. really easy job. you can find a lot of tutorials with great pics online too. the one that i remember off the top of my head is a rebuilt tech for a saab t25. very similar to s13 t25. all steps apply the same way. look for it on google.
if you are really anal about things you can get it rebalanced but if you are really careful you can mark the rotor and the shaft and reassemble it later exactly the same way.

im not really sure about other people, but ive heard that for some reason rebuilt turbos never last. maybe its just a rumor, but im just gonna throw it out there to the op, do some research, maybe save up a little and get something you dont need to rebuild?
think about it.

IF you take it apart and dont get it rebalanced the turbo shaft will be out of balance and cause a lot of vibration that will be transferred to the bearings, journal or not, and cause them to fail prematurely. the life of the turbo most likely, at least, is the square of wheel speed. so if you increase the speed 2 times the life expectancy will go down probably by a factor of 4.
on the other hand IF you are very careful and mark everything before disassembly you can put it back together, without re-balancing, and get away with it for a fair amount of time. :)

BRO. i mean this in the nicest way. fucking search. i promise you its been covered, you are not the first one in the history of the world that is strapped for cash and wants to pick up used/blown turbo to rebuild and enjoy the benefits of more horsepower.
ball bearing turbo = not rebuildable (unless you call a $700 center housing replacement a rebuild)
journal bearing turbo = rebuildable
