I have noticed that an evo 8 and 9 have higher torque numbers than their horsepower, whereas on the sr20DET the horse power is always higher than the torque. Both are 2 liters, so what is the sr20DET lacking besides more power? I want more torque without increasing my displacement. How can I do this?

Evo + wrx are designed with low end torque; their torque peaks at about 3000rpm and falls miserably toward redline. Shifting these cars at redline won't give the best acceleration. If you want that kind of low end torque, get a tiny turbo that spools lightning fast

And pleeeeease don't compare torque and power numbers. They are different things. It's like comparing electric current and electric power.

Torque and hp numbers alone are useless. Knowing the rpm of the peaks, and especially the shape of the curves, and matching them to the goal of your car are more important

Ok, well my goal is to have the torque curve be consistant. And not drop down as the revs go up. I think plateau is what I am looking for.

You want a linear curve... Keeping your factory intake manifold, ex mani and so on will help keep trq numbers closer to your hp numbers. Once you go bigger cams, manifold, turbo, you'll see a bigger gap in the hp to trq numbers..

and this is one of the reasons I like the stock cams as opposed to aftermarket ones.

There are plenty of setups that can allow for a higher tq number than hp too.

Something that would be easy would be to setup an rpm independent boost controller and use a gt28rs turbo. set the boost higher down low and let it taper off as the rpms climb. The key there would be to datalog the maf voltage and know when to stop increasing the boost down low and when to reduce boost up top. The idea is to keep your turbo in its most effecient state at all times.
People set their max boost so not to over work (spin) their turbo, but when they are hitting that max boost number down at 4krpm they are no where near over spinning their turbo. The rpm independent boost controller will allow you to bring your turbo to the edge through out the rev band maximising both your hp and tq! Best of both worlds right? And when complimented by a fast spooling turbo, well, it will be a fun car to say the least.

Hp and tq ARE in fact directly figured off of each other but they do represent different things. The amount of tq you make at a certain rpm will always equal the same hp at that rpm. The more tq you have up top, the more hp you do as well. There are math equations avabiable online for you to do the math yourselves to confirm this. Its the same way dynos figure it.

(Tq x RPM)/5252 = HP thats why the Tq and HP curves always pass though eachother at 5252rpms
