So i have already posted looking for a turbo kit and someone on here has PMed me and has a kit i am fairly interested in BUT!
A friend of mine told me that i should not turbo a stock KA24DE that has 160 XXX miles on it as it probably wont hold much past 3-4 lbs of boost for any length of time and its my DD/fun track car.... what do you guys think? im looking for 250-275 RWHP?
thanks for the input.
Gary
Depend what shape your engine is in.
If the compression checks good and it does burn oil.. Boost it
7-8 pounds would be easy on a decent engine, as long as fuel and ignition needs are met.
Have at it

There is no problem boosting a KA even at 160 XXX if the motor is in decent shape. Do a compression test first. You can run a setup between 7-10psi DD if it's well tuned. Even if your engine dies on you, for the price these engine are sold, it's a joke compare to SR's or other engine that fit's 240sx engine bay, that's why I have few spare engines in the garage :)

I agree with above just do a compression test/leak down and check oil pressure. Maybe even do a tune up.. plus water pump and other things that may be about ready to go.

All of the above plus a GOOD TUNE.

If you are looking for 250-275 WHP, you would be right at the limit of a stock KA24DE's internals. It would work, don't get me wrong, but to protect your investment, you should shop around for another KA short block and have it rebuilt with some lower compression pistons. A bit more cash, but you would have a very solid engine that could run more boost, would be capable of more power and would last far longer than an internally stock KA.

My buddy had his KAT running on stock internals for about 4-5 months. After dat his rings blew out..

compression test...if its too low (155) then dont go at it. mine KA-T lasted 6 months ONLY due to my turbo coming off the manifold while pushing 12psi (nuts and studs back out and.....well its a long story lol) . Cracked cylinder 4 rings....tore the engine down and replaced pistons and rings

Umm...you do know there are stock bottom end KAs out there pushing over 500 hp right??? :ddog:
What it all comes down to is health of the bottom end and tuning. Stock rods been proven to hold over 600hp. As far as the pistons, folks at KA-T.org has been pushing the numbers higher and higher.

I've said it once and I will say it again, the key is TUNING. I am running stock internals and no issues with my setup.

Exactly. Fuel. Lots of it.

I did 8 psi on my stock engine at about 130k.
Don't be scared.
And listen to RedPotatoes. I like him.

Yea, maybe on 116 octane racing fuel and massive amounts of it. I only suggested new pistons to protect the investment. Besides, I'm sure those 600hp "stock bottom ends" are freshly rebuilt.

yea but i guess in this situation it would be about how long it would last. ive seen motors blow at 7lbs, ive also seen motors hold up 22lbs no problem. its all about the luck of the draw, pretty much hit or miss. Ka's are a dime a dozen anyways break it, fix it, and boost it again.
