¥ € $ - Learn. Practice. Trade.WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Law enforcement arrested two men in Tennessee who had plans to rob a gun dealer to shoot Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and "as many non-Caucasians" as possible, an official said on Monday.

An official from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said police found the men in the Jackson, Tennessee area with a number of guns, including a sawed-off shotgun, in their car.

"They wanted to go to a place where they could shoot as many non-Caucasian as they could," the official said, noting that the men first planned to rob a gun dealer. "They also had a plot to assassinate Sen. Obama."

Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president, is leading Republican John McCain in opinion polls ahead of the November 4 election.

All the progress the country has made towards equality has been great and hopefully the future will include a point where racism is a thing of the past (doubtful), but something like that might fuck up everything thats been improved over the years.

I'd probably be more worried about something happening overseas than at home. most of the ppl claiming to take him down have been nothing more than a crude redneck, or two. no doubt there'll be good few of grassroots assassination attempts ('Adolf' from Denver comes to mind) , but none of them should be taken too seriously either. the assailants will probably too drunk on moonshine to even aim.

Assassination wouldn't happen without planning and skill (especially if the assassin was intent on not being caught), but it IS within the skill of many people out there. Especially if you don't give a shit if you die doing it. It doesn't matter who you are, or what kind of security you have, if you are within the public realm at any time at all... You're vulnerable somewhere, somehow. I agree it likely wouldn't happen, and if it did, it would likely fail. I just don't agree with you that security measures alone are a guarantee of the opposite.

It also comes down to the fact that most people who are capable of carrying any attempt out, have zero reason or motivation to do so.

IIRC I read somewhere that the president receives, in some form, threats of harm or assassination that are aware to the secret service etc. at least on a weekly basis. With Obama being the candidate and the latests media darling, and especially if he is elected, for them to suddenly become much more publicized....

No, not at all. I simply meant how the media typically acts with things of that nature. I didn't mean it towards his political ideology as more towards his status within the mass media and the whole Obama "mania" that many people seem to be on. I also didn't mean EVERY threat would make headlines, or even more would than before. I just expect to see them more aggresively publicized when they are made public.
