After weeks of searching the internet along with zilvia, I have made a list of recommended upgrades to do before installing my SR and I would like to know everyone's opinions as to If these upgrades are worth the extra cash for the average joe's SR swap on a budget? Other recommendations are always welcome! Thanks for your input

Yes on most minus the Greddy Pulley set, belts and Greddy air filter. E-fans a matter of preference. Most say stock shroud and mechanical fan is good enough, just upgrade the radiator. Pulley set, you dont really feel the difference. Belts, if you spend enough time under the hood, you'd know when and if its going bad. Greddy Air filter, you wont be able to reuse it when/if you upgrade to a Z-maf, will just end up being a waste of money.

Samco Silicone Radiator Hoses are a waste of money. New oem Nissan pieces or even auto parts store ones are more than enough.

I would say a 3 inch turbo back exhaust is a must before anything else

change the stock turbo elbow to an aftermarket one. Its alot easier when the motor is out

actually if on stock turbo i would use a 2.5 inch exhaust for more lower end torque. will be fine for upper rpms too. stick with oem parts..radiator hoses. pulleys, stock fan/clutch/shroud. upgrade the radiator. just use oem belts and oem catch can. everything else stock should be fine.

Would you happen to be able to recommend a "quiet" exhaust system? I'm not fond of the coppers here in cali. Anything to keep them off my back is worth spending a few extra bux on.

i have the old apexi n1. it's not loud. i think it just gets loud when you start running straight pipes, no resonator and all that. Jus make sure you get an exhaust with a good muffler (the part that makes the exhaust sound, usually its a big fat squareish piece)

oh, and install a flux capacitor. that will make you go zoom.

Alright, Im just trying to find a nice clean SR to work with and the build will begin. Pix along with it :D

Anyone recommend the Koyo Radiator ($350) or the Mishimoto ($225)?
Are they equivalent or is the Koyo worth the extra $125?

Greddy Oil Pan--waste
Flex-a-Lite Dual 12" Fans or Altima Electric Fans--worth it
Koyo Aluminum Radiator--loved mine
Greddy VSPL Intercooler Kit--these are nice, but megans is cheap and okay
Nismo Thermostat--never had one
HKS SSQV --these are cool, i like the really old ones on ebay best though
Greddy Airnix Air Filter--waste
Samco Silicone Radiator Hoses--waste
Greddy Pulley Set--waste
Power Enterprise V-belts--waste
Greddy Oil Catch Can--waste

there ya go. the oem belts, and hoses are just fine. i never needed the better thermostat. a kn filter is fine. as for a nice quiet exhaust, i really like the rsr street catback, really low key look and sound.

TO ADD to your list:
NGK plugs
Oil change and oil filter
o2 sensor(redtop u can use a 89 300zx turbo one)
Walboro fuel pump (will feel like your on a roller coaster if you dont change it)
300zx fuel filter
timing Tensioner
Water pump(check it to see if its good)
Clutch kit(check to see if you need to replace yours, keep like $500.00 on the side)
Exhaust- manifold, down pipe, test pipe then full exhaust(not neccesary but so are some of the items you put)

FOR you list:
Greddy oil pan- unless ur doing some track days or crazy driving not worth it. just buy a new oil pan oem ones are fine.
Fans -Great but u need a switch as well and a temp sensor(optional) to put in the radiator if u go for the upgrade
KOYO -fine
Greddy intercooler- good idea not needed unless u have no piping, but dont forget to buy your Hot pipe and flange with whatever BOV u get
Thermostat- good idea
Airnix- if you have no piping and money why not get the kit.
SAmco hoses- just buy new ones but samco not needed just baller
Greddy pulley set- make better horse power somewhere else in my opionon
Power v belts- go ahead your money but any oem will be fine
Greddy catch can- i feel over priced and over rated

this is basically what i did for my motor when i got it. changed all the parts that get worn out so i can have a fresh start in the US. then from there upgrade at your budget's will. hope this helps. By the way whats your budget?

I have a few thousand to spend, but I'm going away for college soon. (Currently finishing up my second year). Probably going to attend Marshall at USC, which is expensive, so not completely sure on the budget yet. We'll see.

haha i have a gt2871 going with 300+hp and only have 2 of those upgrades...intercooler and blow off valve. the rest are for the autoX or drag racing. if you're on a budget you dont really need those other things.

so the stock fan/fan clutch should be sufficient in lowering the temps? if I do choose to get 2 12" fans... would this (http://www.frsport.com/DIF-10085-Thermostatic-Dual-Electronic-Fan-Controller-Ver--C_p_15992.html) be a perfect solution? how did people hook up electric fans before this product came out... to a switch?

Rocker Arm Stoppers are cheap, easy to install, and great insurance for your motor.

Id definitely add them to the list.

Im currently in the same situation as you, but ive already got a motor. Heres my "Parts Needed" list:

$120 Rocker Arm Stoppers
$225 Mishimoto Radiator (cheaper than koyo, better warranty)
$375 Wiring Specialties Wiring Harness (worth the hassle IMO)
$100 Oil filter relocation kit (its a real PITA to get to an SR oil filter, this will make life easier)
$90 Walbro fuel pump (255lph) This is not an optional part.
$80 Samco hoses- not required, but worth the 80 bucks. ISIS ones are even cheaper
$400 FMIC (havent decided what one yet)
$100 Boost + oil pressure gauges (could be more, could be less, just a guestimate)
$60 Nismo thermostat
$120 Codyace A/C Brackets (cuz i aint goin a friggin DAY without a/c) haha.

Oh and new belts,
Alternator K050370 $11.99
AC/PS K040345 $11.99 (x2)

id reccomend agenst the walbro fuel pump
get a denso
so much better and you dont have to worry about it burning out and giving insuffecient fuel pressure

Greddy Oil Pan---no for average SR, especially if you're not tracking it
Flex-a-Lite Dual 12" Fans or Altima Electric Fans...overkill...you can do a single Perm-a-Cool (14") and it works great
Koyo Aluminum Radiator....NO...use your KA radiator, it's fine for you
Greddy VSPL Intercooler Kit...for AVERAGE JOE, just get a shitty ebay FMIC
Nismo Thermostat...NO...will make your car run too cool (<70) for regular driving
HKS SSQV ....sounds like ass WRX in my opinion
Greddy Airnix Air Filter....NO waste of money
Samco Silicone Radiator Hoses.....NO waste of money
Greddy Pulley Set.....No waste of money
Power Enterprise V-belts...No waste of money
Greddy Oil Catch Can....YES, good for the motor and prevents oil getting into turbo/intake

I replaced the really hard to get to stuff while the motor was out. Motor mounts and exedy clutch. I used my ka radiator and a turboback exhaust. Do it all your self and save money. Lots of people replace their water pump before the one in the car goes out. Ill wait and replace things as they break.

DeatschWerks
05-26-2010, 01:35 PM
The water pump is a cheap enough part, and it's good insurance to replace it. Especially when the engine is out of the car!

sirfallsalot243
06-01-2010, 08:57 AM
Yeah but the water pump is stupid easy to change even when the motor is in the car. If youre monitoring your engine temps, theres no reason that a water pump going could cause any type of catastrophic failure. So with that in mind, I plan to change mine when it goes.

DeatschWerks
06-11-2010, 01:56 PM
It can potentially be catastrophic if you are tracking the car or on a long trip. ...and if you end up having a problem and the car overheats, may not be an engine breaker...but it can be pretty inconvenient.

Ok, if your on a REAL budget (not an imaginary one that you will later find out you cant finance) this is what I would do:
1) Head Gasket (Metal, Apex-i, Cosworth, PE, Greddy)
2) Stainless Steel Turbo lines (makes and future work on your turbo/turbo swap sooo much easier)
3) Thermostat (or take yours out and run it open...this you can still do easily with the motor in the car though)
4) Plan on downpipe back exhaust (can be easily done after the swap)
5) Some sort of cheap open air filter element (blitz, hks, apex-i...whatever is cheap)

Really all you should do while the motor is out is steps 1 and 2. The rest can be down over time as you have more money. These two things are a pain in the ass to do with the motor in the car. Save your money, do more research, and decide what you want to do with your car as you go along. Everything else is pretty easy to do on a SR.

Hell yeah I agree 100% elbow back is where it's @. Free up the power band!

As sirfallsalot previously stated rocker arm stoppers are a must. ARP Head studs if you change the headgasket.

And if you really feel the need to get pulleys go with touge factory or circuit sports they accomplish the same thing.

The samco hoses are a bling factor kinda like the pulleys at this point in time.
