View Full Version : I Need A Truck

Nothing to huge.

I just need something for freeway trips and it has to be able to tow my Corolla.

Looking to spend around $6k.

Fuel economy is cool also but, not exactly necessary.

What would you recommend?

cheap
won't give you up
won't let you down
won't run around and desert you
i regularly borrow my dad's for hauling stuff, it's pretty much invincible
v6 gets good mpg and can tow stuff fine, but i'd go for a v8. if it's always going to be on asphalt don't bother with 4x4, it only rains where you are

I( had a 98 F150... Well my dad did. He went off to the desert, my mom drove it for an entire year without changing the oil, crashed it a few times, got it dirtier than a vietnamese hooker in the mud, and guess what?

It still ran. I hate ford cars, but I love ford trucks.

I have never really heard anything about an F-150 being unreliable and if I have, it was drowned out by the 878687576546755876 positive stories.

The only gripe I hear about F-150's is the interior, and it's true it looks like dog shit. It's an American vehicle what do you expect :keke:

I bought a 99 Jeep Cherokee as my winter truck last month and I love it so far. The 4.0 straight 6 gets 23mpg or better highway and it can haul 5,000 pounds.

I actually just looked at them.

That may actually be a viable option. There are plenty of 98-2000 2wd with under 80k on them for around 4k

I haven't driven a 2wd, but the 4wd sure as hell can get through the mud. It's such a difference from driving a slammed S13. I found mine for 1700 from a guy on Craigslist, and there are sooooo many of them out there, so you might want to give Craigslist a try. It gets the best fuel mileage of any comparable truck, and can still tow more than enough, so it was a no brainer for me.

Plus, parts are cheap. I know any American vehicle is going to be cheap to repair, but goddamn are OE replacement parts cheap.

minitrucks are great if you want to bag it and be lame

if you can't fit a 4x8 sheet of drywall in the bed it's not really a truck.

the interior is weak, but it's a truck, not a 7 series. it's easy to clean and hard to break

my friend's 92 3/4 ton gmc truck has been pretty damn reliable. bought it with just a tad over 100k miles, and has put 50k really really hard miles on it.

Daily burn outs, lots of jumps, off roading, top speed limiter all the damn time, basically drives it like he stole it.

The truck is completely stock. been really reliable, but has a small trans leak now. Oh yea, he maintains it very poorly as well.

Bought it for $2400 or something 2 or 3 years ago.

Last year I was in a similar situation (wanting a truck to haul around my bike and tow the car occasionally), but with an emphasis on daily driving it (so fuel economy was key - I ended up buying a 2007 Tacoma 2wd 4cyl 5spd.

It doesn't tow shit (hauled my bike/etc around just fine though), brakes suck too badly to tow anything, looks like a 3yr old's matchbox truck (15" wheels with tiny lil tires), and only gets like 23mpg. I seriously contemplated throwin a log mani and a t28 on it, but I like warranties. V6 would have been fine - they actually do pretty well with a car/trailer behind em.

We have an old Chevy 3500 1-ton pickup. It's bulletproof and can haul any damn thing I want it to.

My dad bought an 05 Yukon in early 07 for 24,000. The dealership down the street is selling an 06 Yukon Denali, same color, same mileage, for 18,000.

Honestly, you better act now before gas becomes any cheaper. I practically stole my truck back when gas was 4 bucks.

note on diesels.

Most people think diesel engines are designed to run a million miles and never fail.

They fail about just as much as normal trucks.

That 02 duramax sounds like a great deal until you factor in that it will need injectors replaced around 200k miles. They're like $200 each new, $150 rebuilt per injector x8. The 12v cummins has about the cheapest parts around but it's the oldest and doesn't make much power. Any of the new electronic diesels will absolutely surprise you on price and don't bother with the dealer. It's like 2-3x that price there. I sold a guy with a 03 cummins common rail, a set of pistons and rings because he cracked a piston running one of those chips. It was $1334 for 8 pistons and rings and he thought it was a smoking deal because the dealer up there wanted $1650 for the same thing. Unique fact. Duramax's have right and left bank pistons. They arn't interchangeable.

He has at least 32" tires, maybe bigger, so that might have something to do with it, although I know 2 years ago he had the tranny rebuilt and last year he just had the whole thing replaced. He doesn't drive it much anymore though due to its 8 mpg.

This is our second 02 Duramax, we never had any problems with injectors, but we have a couple friends replace them. They dont all go out at the same time also, its kinda a pain in the ass, but If you really use a truck for trucky purposes I would not go gas.

dont get a fucking ranger they suck ass cant tow shit and cant haul people, if you dont have any friends then you are in luck.

im not like just everyone on here im not brand loyal at all so you can trust what i say.

get the older 96-? ford f150 we have two of them one with i think 320k and the other with like 290k no fucking joke. we never change the oil its lucky if it get done every 30-40k no tranny probs at all. and i would say each one a little sensor went out like $100 bucks and we changed the plugs and wires at about 200k. and thats fucking it, honda my ass this will last longer i fucking swear, and the mpg is not bad at all.

Thank you.. I totally hear and understand everything ur saying. However I feel as if a F-150-250 would be a bit much. I mean dont get me wrong they are gorgeous trucks but I dont even like big cars. I dont even really dig Rangers nor would I consider one as a support truck. I like the Bronco because its not humongous and it still seems pretty capable. While the F-Series has an awesome line up it's still a lil more than I need.

Ever considered a Cherokee? My '99 has 220k miles on the original drivetrain and still runs perfectly, not to mention gas mileage isnt bad. Towing capacity is 5000lbs.

Get a older 22RE Toyota truck. You won't regret it.

$6k? Toyota t100. The model with cab if you have kids. I have a '00 4Runner (same engine as the t100 iirc) and it's never failed me. As a matter of fact, you could tow with a 4runner which is also at or around $6k(earlier year model). ~5000 lbs two capacity.

Or get a Jeep that's fully loaded and half the price, with a hella larger aftermarket and community.

Cummins, my dodge gets better mileage than my toyota trucks and diesel costs about $.50 /gallon less than premium gasoline.
