Hello guys,

I just picked up a S13 with a redtop SR20DET a few weeks ago. I've been repairing it ever since. I had to redo the camshaft timing because the cam gears were off by a tooth. The car has a nice clean idle now, but I have the infamous tap - tap - tap noise... so I'm going to have to pull the cams out and bleed the lifters. It came with a blown POS T28 and SSAC manifold.... so luckily my good friend let me borrow his T25 for now until I upgrade.

Anyways, I don't mean to rant, I just have so many problems with this vehicle. Unfortunately, I came across another problem. The car is leaking between the bellhousing and block. It's dripping right off of the lower tranmission bolt. I pulled off the clutch inspection cover and it was very oily on the inside.

Basically, I just wanted to know whether or not I need to remove the rear main seal retainer to do the rear main seal? I've tried searching, but I've got very mixed results. If I have to remove the retainer I might as well remove the whole engine / transmission assembly... cuz from what I understand, both oil pans have to be removed to get the retainer out.

Hopefully someone with experience could help me out!!!! Thanks Yall!!!!
Jim

no, you can just pry out the seal with a skinny screwdriver (carefully) and use the old seal to hammer in the new one.

Of course, after the flywheel is off.
