View Full Version : Unidentified Cooling Problem

I'd like to begin by explaining the Irony of the situation... The only modifications done to my engine currently is Cooling, lol:

~ KOYO Aluminum Radiator
~ Flex-A-Lite Dual 220 Fans
~ Enjuku Racing Cooling Panel
~ NISMO Thermostat
~ Greddy Multiswitcher Unit used as Fan controller.

Here is the deal, my Multiswitcher shows me my Coolant Temperature on the Digital Screen in the car, has settings on when to turn my fans on/off & has a Overheat Warning Indicator... Settings are as follows:

~ Fans On: 195°
~ Fans Off: 185°
~ Over Heating Warning: 205°

Here is my problem, for some reason my Multiswitcher seems to be getting inaccurate readings, which is allowing my car the oppurtunity to overheat...

My Multiswitcher is reading Temperatures at 100°-110° while cruising, when they should read around 165°-180° as they had in the past when all was accurate, and that plays apart in the factory thermostat opens at 165°, and well I have the colder NISMO one on top of that.......

Here is the big problem, my car begins to OVERHEAT when the Multiswitcher reads 165°, and plays a huge part in the fact the seeing the Multiswitcher is not exceeding the preset 185° mark, to turn my fans on. No fans on = no cooling of the coolant... I also doubt its a bad thermostat, even though I'm getting lower temps which would indicate a constant coolant flow, I wouldn't be overheating.

I have a new Coolant Temp Sensor & will be checking for air bubbles by bleeding the system again tonight. Also, as soon as I can, will be taking advantage of the "Standalone Switch" capability that the Multiswitcher has, to allow me to turn my fans on whenever I'd like.

Other notes:

VERY small hole in radiator's end tank from previous owner not using any spacers on the lower radiator panel, I know its there but rarely leaks coolant... Possible source of air inlet into system? I have something that I put in the coolant that will plug it, but I need a coolant flush first. If that doesn't work ill see about getting it welded up. Regaurdess I do desperately need a Coolant Flush.

So wat do you guys think on why in getting these readings and allowing the oppurtunity for my car to overheat

Where did you mount the sending unit for your fan controller? And how did you wire all this up?

Well I'm not exxxxxxactly sure if we're on the same boat with what I have for my Fan Controller, its a standalone device which is capable of being used as a fan conroller, so its not neccisary a Fan Controller in its self, but I mounted the Multiswitcher in the Din Unit under my sterio:

As far as wiring I can't say, at the time I worked at Best Buy and my friend Paul, who is a Car Audio Installer & Installed a Multiswitcher on one of his/buddys 4 S-Chassis in his driveway, did the job for me while we were "working". I know he ran the wiring from th M.S. to the Factory Temp Sensor/ECU and to the Fans/Power through a grommet in the firewall. I can't say what to what exactly, but ill try to help you out the best I can, and take a look. As you know its pouring outside, and it'll be that way for the next 2 days b/c were getting Hurrican rain headed our way, and my dads in the garage at the moment, but I'll get out there as soon as I can.

As far as the issue at hand, I have an addition:

This morning, at ~2:30am, after finishing Installing my new Kouki S14 Seats, removing miscellaneous Emissions stuff, and cleaning up my Engine bay, a buddy and I went to get food. I picked him up, and seeing I was in the garage and went straight to get him, I forgot my wallet. As I pulled in the driveway, I looked down and saw my needle was above H!! So I looked at my Multiswitcher and it said 180°. Generally this would be normal but remember my car would overheat when it reads 160°; and its been raining for ~18 hours and has been really cool and the Overflow was dry... Verdict: Theres atleast 1 Bubble in the system somewhere... if not the main cause of the problem, its there.

If there's a place for coolant to leak, air will get in. Air is way less dense than water, and under the suction of the coolant circulating through the radiator you're creating a vacuum.

Repair the radiator, flush and fill the cooling system, then bleed as required. Once you're certain that phase is done you can move on to other culprits if that doesn't fix it.

Deffinately, Deffinately. That's why I bought the solution to put in my coolant that'll fill the hole, kind of like Fix-A-Flat for the radiator, but I need a coolant flush first. I am going to do a "Home Coolant flush now"... Drain radiator, fill, run, bleed, repeat b/c I got gallons here, so mine-as-well. and see if the coolant is clear enough to run the solution. Then go from there.

thanks.

Definitely not the best solution.
It WILL leak again eventually.
Especially under high pressures from the coolant being hot.
[hot day or driving hard]

Fix the radiator with something, weld it, JD weld, epoxy, anything is better than that crap.

It will also leave a bunch of crap in your coolant system.

JB weld is cheaper than the radiator fix.
Might as well.

You know I was thiniing about the remnants in the coolant left over because the hole is not large and the bottle of ish is rather large.

I actually just bougt some JB Weld Epoxy stuff to plug up my AIV Emissions Bumb that is whistling lol, so I think its leaking. I will have a lot left over, so maybe ill use that... It says its rated to 250° and well Ill never have my car run that hot, so is perfect.

I'm going to have to pull the radiator to get to it, and I just drained and added coolant.. meh its been sitting there, so not really a loss.

Also on the plus side I can remain the last part of my A/C system... the Condenser that be chillin in front of it... 2 Birds 1 Stone.
