engine build questions/ redtop

so i am almost ready to rebuild my redtop w. forged rods/pistons, i have the full engine gasket kit, tomei hg, oem bearings etc. but im just curious on some other things i should replace to ensure the safety of the engine ie: water pump? oil pump? timing chain? that kinda stuff... or if im fine w. just the old stuff... may be a newb question but i'd rather ask than make a mistake or spend useless money... thanks guys :bigok:

Yes replace Oil Pump, Water pump might as well replace the timing chain with the new revised chain guides and slap in an S14 Oil pick up (strainer)

Look through the FSM to find out any misc. o-rings that should be replaced.

yeah thats kinda what i figured... the water pump, oil pump, and timing chain+guides... why the s14 oil pickup?

The S14's oil pickup is suppose to have a bigger opening iirc so it gets in a bit more oil. I know there's a picture of the 2 on Nico, someone just did the install.

S14 oil strainer (pickup) has a much larger opening compared to S13 SR which should be easier on the oil pump. Otherwise it is identical dimensions, just make sure you replace the gasket before you mount it to the oil pump assembly.

I'd also check O2 sensor for damaged wires or clogged/fouled with old crusty soot sensor. Check all your radiator/vacuum/boost/fuel hoses for cracking/swelling and most will be in need of replacement because the compression fittings holding each end on will have molded a permanent shape in the hose not sealing hoses completely...which is great if you like troubleshooting leaks esp. under the intake mani.

Also, hit you front and rear main crank oil seals for good measure...again all in the name of avoiding headaches caused by fluid leaks. Hope your build goes well!

replace the front and rear main, while its out of the car it will be easier. Just every gasket to ensure proper seals on everything.

S14 pickup has a bigger opening as well as a different brace mounting point. It's braced directly to the strainer part on S14, rather than the tube going to the strainer.

oh yeah i dont think i really explained myself clear enough lol, i have a full engine gasket kit and everythings going to be new, all i was curious about was how neccessary it is to replace the water pump, oil pump, and timing chain/guides... thanks for the help guys

Its very neccessary to replace all those, more than likely they have never been changed.

Oil pump is your biggest thing cuz of its location and cus you have to basically pull the engine to replace and remove the head and pull the lower and upper oil pans.

Plus if the oil pumps dies (Very common to happen) you wont know it until its too late, Unless you have a gauge.


Timing chain guides I would recommend, they have a revised guide kit which reinforces the guides with metal backings/brackets compared to the full plastic OEM in the S13's.

Do it all so you never have to worry for a long time.

Stock Block will hold 500ish
