I just bought a blown SR20det for my custom street/race car, the guy I bought it from said it had suffered from oil starvation while running in the shop and was quickly shut down. The cams are toast as there was no oil circulating and the scared up the cam caps on the exhaust side pretty good so those are gone. the intake side looked ok but I cant be sure since this is my first venture into the sr20det world. What I really want to know is whether my head is still usable or not. If its not where can I find a good used one and about how much do they usually cost? Here are some pics:

Is this tensioner still good?

One more question for this post, are these pistons still good?

Yea those cam retainers are trash.I would f**k around with the tensioner, get a new ons. The pistons, i would say need to be removed and look for heat spots...Hell look for heat spots on everything.:2c: GL

I'd break it down more to really inspect it better.

Bingo!

First step, before anything else, is to find out what caused the oil flow problems to begin with. After that you need to check block and its internals for problems as well.

If the cam caps are that fried, you'll want to check the crank and rod bearings as well.

Personally, I'd use this as an excuse to do an engine rebuild.

But that's obviously going to cost more.

Whatever you do, Good Luck!

I was planning on doing a mild build since this engine is going in a 1500lb car, I went by the machine shop today and he quoted me 400 to spec out the short block and put new bearings in the bottom end, and put in new rings and a light hone then reassemble so it ready to drop a head on:D

the problem that appears with your head,is a famous one in france>wrong maintenance

lubrication holes in the head are block with cokefact oil,and this appeared in the exhasut side,i have 3 or 4 sr20 heads in my warehouse that have exactly the same problems, one solution>garbage

i'm sorry ;(

that tensioner is shot, the clip that holds it in for instalation is broken so there would be no way to even install it unless you had someone hold it in while you torqued it.. but id get a new one.

you can find heads for 250-300 usually i think, i sold a good one last year for 250.

get the head hot tanked. line hone the cam journals, and deck it. its not cheap unless you know someone at a machine/engine shop or have access to a full engine shop(me) :)

if non of the above fit you then scrap it and get a new head. keep the valves and all the valvetrain as spare parts.
