August 8-24

I'm looking forward to this year's Olympics just because
of the fact that I get to see basketball again. The only
other sports I watch are swimming, track and field, and
gymnastics (yes, it's pretty fun watching lol).

I only watch soccer and basketball...for some reason I'm still surprised its being held in Beijing.

I wish the Olympics were popular like they were when I was a kid.

It's all everyone talked about. Now it seems as unexceptional as a Space Shuttle launch. Something else that has gone unnoticed for a few years now. :(

With that being said. I will be watching as many events as I deem interesting this year, which should be quite a few of them. :D

i will definitely be watching the track and field stuff. I train with a few guys that are going to the trials and i hope to be in the trials for 2012 myself. For the record, the American Olympic trials is harder than the actual Olympic games. The sprints are gonna be INTENSE. Also the relays between us and Jamaica. I cant wait!!! Definitely be on the look out for some record breaking times!

My predictions

Mens 100m - Tyson Gay - USA

Womens 100m - Veronica Campbell - JAM

Mens 200m - Tyson Gay - USA

Womens 200m - Alison Felix - USA

Mens 400m - Jeremy Wariner - USA He'll walk away with it.

Womens 400m - I dunno

Mens 4x100m Relay - USA Our third leg got smacked in the face by an opposing team during a hand off and we still got 4th.

Womens 4x100m Relay - JAM

Mens 4x400m Relay - USA

Womens 4x400m Relay - Its a toss up IMO.

Olympics..especially summer olympics ALWAYS remind me of Homer doing the same dance as the boxer on TV when he won food from Krusty Burrger :D

and Winter always reminds me of Cool Runnings

don't ask me why, I don't even know myself

In the end the boycotts only affect the athletes, which is sad because these people trained and probably did nothing else for the prior 4 years.

The Olympics are meant to be free of politics.

Right on the money.

My sprint coach went through 3 consecutive olyimpic trial years and the year he was going to actually go they boycotted. And he said the exact same thing. "All it did was fuck it up for us. It didnt change a damn thing" were his words. He was still on Team USA so they just competed in europe like the usually did during the year, but not going to the Olympics was still a bummer.

I think also the reason why Olympics are big in the US is because there isn't enough television coverage. Secondly, there are a lot of fat people in the US that just aren't interested in Sports....

I saw a commercial for the Olympics, and they said they will be shown on 7? different channels, some in HD (where available) and it looked like they might actualy have extended coverage so you can actually watch the events that interest you, not the prime-time stuff.

Amare withdrew because he's worried about his knees. I think this is a bad team for international play. Need more pure outside shooter in order to compete against the zone defense. I see Athens happening all over again, I think Micheal Redd has lost his touch and everybody else are penetration players. Not having a respected pure shooter to stretch out the defense will make it harder for them to score on the inside...

Xandy Boosts
06-23-2008, 04:21 PM
Out of the zone at the moment, but besides rayray and redd, who are the other american pure shooters?

some reason, I can only think of international shooters but no american ones....

i feel bad for the runners. i went to china last summer in early august and the heat and humidity was umbareable you would literalyy walk out side for 10 15min and be drenched in sweat also the air quality thier is not very good. one cool thing though the staiums are really cool looking.

revat619
06-24-2008, 01:41 PM
whats really bad for the runners is the pollution. The people in charge of all the stuff going on over there released a statement saying that the pollution would not affect the runners for up to an hour.

I found that hilarious considering i train as a sprinter, and you WARM UP for at least a good hour before the race even starts.

And as far as the whole medal race is concerned, im not trying to hate, but when a country accounts for a FIFTH of the WORLDS population and you have a team thats bigger than ours, you damn well better win the most medals. I dont get why they're making such a big deal about it. China sent litteraly hundreds more athletes this year than the 04 games. Why would them winning the medal race be such a potentially huge upset?

Because hosting the Olympic games means your country automatically qualifies for every event.

Being in an event doesn't necessarily mean a good chance a gold.

This is why we shouldn't have had the Olympics in China

A Chinese man attacked two American tourists yesterday, killing one of them, before committing suicide. The attack took place on the second level of the Drum Tower. The attacker jumped from the tower afterwards, killing himself.
The Americans were family members of a coach for the United States Olympic Men’s Indoor Volleyball Team.

Ignorant?! I am military intelligence and I do and will know more about China than you will ever know. The Chinese had been flapping there gums about how it was gonna be safe and look what happens. This kind of attack sends a message to Americans to stay out of China and China's affairs. Oh, and not to mention that the people attacked and were the In-Laws of an American coach. Hell, for all we know he could've been hired by the Chinese government. The difference between the 96 Olympics and these Olympics is that Atlanta, Georgia isn't a communist country.

It's unrealistic to assume China can stop an isolated incident like this.

They weren't wearing anything that specifically identified themselves as Americans, also their Chinese tour guide was stabbed as well.

The difference between the 96 Olympics and these Olympics is that Atlanta, Georgia isn't a communist country.

Georgia (the one you're talking about) isn't a country, its a state.

Anyone notice how people from all over the world applauded North Korea? It was kind of shocking because only a few countries were mass applauded, here North Korea is perceived as the deathstar. The opening ceremony was definitely fun to watch.
China isn't that bad, certainly not as terrible as many stereotype it to be, every country has nice places and bad places.

Sigh of disappointment...

One crazy guy kills some people then offs himself and you automatically think its some sort of government conspiracy to send a message to America. Get real dude. You should know better than that. Cold War ended a while ago. Just because China governs their people differently than us doesnt make them automatically wrong.

First, thought I'd point out to you that Atlanta, Georgia isn't a country, I'm pretty sure this is true, as I'm typing this message from Atlanta, Georgia, unless military intelligence knows something that I don't. Second, I'm sure having lived in China for 10 years doesn't qualify me to know anything about the country... what do I know, since I'm just a brainwashed communist pawn that hates Americans like the rest of my brethren. Third, ask yourself what the Chinese government could possibly gain from planning the stabbing of the in-laws of an American coach in a sport where China doesn't even stand a realistic chance to medal in. Your post is ignorant because it makes an outlandish assumption and judgment based on outdated prejudices and beliefs.

Back on topic: I am excited about the men's basketball game tomorrow morning (EST). I'd like for China to do well, but will settle for not getting embarrassed, Chinese backcourt players and guards are atrocious, can't dribble the ball against chairs.

And like true liberal Americans you are all assuming that China's not that bad b/c as children you were taught that people are generally good and the you have to respect and tolerate other peoples cultures. I bet you all thought Iraq and Afghanistan were happy go lucky places and the kids played w/ gumdrop smiles until they started suicide bombing the shit out of everything and kidnapping and decapitating people. Well I have a newsflash for you all. There are people in this world who want to kill you for no other reason than being an American and they will trick you into a false sense of security so they can do exactly that.

Just because you live in a place doesn't mean you know the inner workings of its government. They gain a public message to not f*** w/ China and they gain demoralized American athletes who fear for their lives and might not perform at the top of their game. And if we had a little more of that "outdated prejudice" nowadays we wouldn't have had a plane hijacked and crashed into two buildings, a subway blown up, a number of people kidnapped and decapitated, or the number of other terrorist attacks that have been committed over recent years.

Don't bring liberal vs conservatives into this. I agree with you that those people exist, I just don't believe they are everywhere as you seem to believe. Also, to compare China and the Middle East is completely off. The Chinese people in general seem to like America and its culture. Have you seen their reaction to the US team in the opening ceremony? I'm watching the USA vs China men's basketball game right now, and there's just as many ooh and ahs for the American team as their is for the Chinese team, doesn't seem like a country full of people bent on hating you coz you're American... having a few crazies doesn't change this.

Just because you live in a place doesn't mean you know the inner workings of its government. I agree that just living in a place doesn't mean you know everything about it. However, the same can be said for working in military intelligence. If anything, we may see different aspects of China that predisposes us to forming certain opinions. Let's just put this to rest, I don't want to clutter up an olympics thread with this.

On topic: my goodness, in the 2nd quarter the game is tied... China is living off of 3s, I wonder when they'll stop falling.

So who watched when Phelps got his gold medal? I think it was on NBC in the states on Saturday night. They totally fucked up the US anthem. Started too early, was way off, I think they even replayed part of it, and then they didn't finish and cut off the "home of the brave" part. That was a low one.

China is getting their asses handed to them in Basketball right now

I watched that game. I heard a lot of boos for USA every time they were trying to score. China was really good at the beginning with their three pointers but couldn't keep up later on the game. Really good defense for the US team, a lot of blocks and steals. Let's hope they live up to their name as "The Redeem Team."

i tossed it on for a few min thinking it would be boring and holy fuck those girls were young and in olympics

Those Chinese girls don't even look 16, there's a rumor going around that the Chinese govt. did some work on their background. Then again, the majority of Asian girls look younger than they really are. They're pretty solid in their performances, really good.

I don't know what the big deal is about the ages. Older girls like in the 20 year old range usually seem to do the best. If you get beat by a 14 year old then you need to go train some more. It's not like 14-16 year olds have some magical advantage over someone of older age.

Through older age you would think would come more experience and better preperation.

drifter101
08-11-2008, 11:32 AM
The 14 year olds have an advantage in that they can fling themselves like ragdolls, very light, nimble, and flexible. Plus the chinese train these girls from the age of like 6 or something, so eight years of training could do alot.

USA put on a good show through the first two rotations while China faltered. But since rotation 3 China's only gotten 1 score below a 16 (a 15.9xx), totally outclassing the field. besides, US's prelim scores put them in realistic contention for the bronze only.
