View Full Version : the "$30" Ghetto Lojack thread

Meet BloJack(tm).
i put the $30 in quotations because you're really looking at about 60 with tax and all that, plus phone prices have gone up. maybe if you find some old ass phone on craigslist you could do it for $30, but i'll be using new shit.
i know this has been discussed in other threads, but i feel it should have its own thread, especially considering how jam packed the stolen goods forum is.
Ghetto Lojack. you take a Boost Mobile GPS-enabled phone, load some software onto it that allows you to track the phone on your computer, and then leave it on and charging in your car. every 90 days you'll need to add minutes ($10 worth? unclear at this point).
you'll need:
-Boost Mobile GPS-enabled phone (Target sells the i425t for 39.99)
-mini-usb cable (to load the software to the phone. you probably have one for a digital camera or another phone or an mp3 player or whatever. if you don't, you have a friend who does, so don't buy one)
-car charger (you can get a mini-usb car charger at walmart and anywhere else for under ten dollars)
-add-on 12v plug (hardwire in your car to plug this thing in)
you'll need to download software from:
http://www.mologogo.com/
to use on your phone. load it up, set it up, and turn it on. the phone has to be on with the application running at all times, so you'll want to hardwire that in your car in a discreet location. then you can track your car when it gets jacked on the website. the end.
i'll update with my own experience when i set this up with the i425t.
here are some threads on other forums about this setup.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=154516
http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2058648&page=1
and here's the phone i'll be using. it has a nice flat back just begging for some velcro.
http://i29.tinypic.com/23sakxw.jpg
i'll pick this phone up in the next few days and rig it up for use, see how long the battery lasts without being plugged in so i can decide between constant power or accessory power, and so on and so forth.

oh yeah. you need to activate the phone and keep the minimum minutes on it. apparently boost will wipe the minutes every 90 days if it goes unused. as far as i can tell, the minimum is ten dollars, maybe five? $40 a year isn't bad though. and the phone comes with ten dollars' worth preloaded, so you're good for 90 days out of the box.

When I first read this I thought to myself, "This is all good and stuff, but there's no insurance on your car like you'd have with LoJack". Then I researched LoJack and realized they don't provide insurance either.

Wire the power cord for the phone to a power supply with a Toggle switch so the phone isn't constantly charging (Cant be good for battery) and you can keep it hidden somewhere with hard accessibility yet still be able to charge it secretly. Only problem is if you can't add minutes online and have to use the phone to add them.

like busted said just rig a charger up so it can be in there at all times and not risk settin it all up to have it stolen while your gps is chargin. that would suck.

Phone chargers pull no more current than an alarm LED, it'd need to be left untouched for several weeks before draining the battery enough to lose power.

i've read this phone gets good gps signal, but i'm going to mount it somewhere close to glass so it'll get the best chance it has at it. also, i think it'd be important to keep it somewhere accessible, in case the phone crashes or something. i'll never take it out of the car, but i'd like to be able to check it out every week or so to make sure it's still operable.
oh, and you can "reboost" on boost mobile's website, so no real need to dig the phone out of its hiding spot to add minutes.

this is a good idea an all but dont most low jack have a kill switch on them that you can activate online. the only problem i see here is having the car sit long enough for you to go and get it and second unless you have a laptop with a constant wireless connection you wouldnt be able to tell where the car is at once you leave to pick it up. unless someone was one the phone with you

Can another phone track other phones? If so, then buying two phones might be a good idea so that you can have the other phone with you at all times and track the other one that's in the car so you don't need constant wireless connection to track it.

Verizon wireless has a real-time tracking system for their phones...chaperone. Of course you need to have it on an existing line so $10 a month for the extra family share line + $10 a month for the chaperone service. It is basically for tracking your out of control daughters but can be easily adapted to track your car. You can set zones and get alerts in real time via txt/email if the phone leaves those zones plus it gives you real time location of said phone.

According to this website - http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2005/10/diy_gps_tracking.html
- yes you can. Which will be good for me since I'll be putting one into my car and one into the boyfriends car (i showed this to him the other day and he asked me to put one in his car - since he's bad with wiring - not a trust issue thing...) I'll test it out and see how well it works.

Actually this is a great idea... You can even build a self contained box and attach an external antenna to it. Like a heavy duty lock box with a external hardwire antenna, which woul definitely increase range and signal. Used to do this to boost wireless signals for my old company cause their network spans more than 1 building....

Lol IT'S NOT ACTUAL GPS PEOPLE.
"GPS-feature" on a phone tracks via the closest cell phone tower - I don't even think they use triangulation. If you don't have cell signal, you don't have gps location.
Your cell phone doesn't get GPS signals from satellites.
It doesn't use any more battery power than regular standby.

real lojack is 500$+
okay here's the scoop
it took 2 hours to activate my boost mobile phone
cheapest to reboost is 10$ after 90 days of expiring
at first when I set everything up, my GPS tracking was off by about a mile
it pinpointed that my phone was at a park across my cross street. I then left my phone at home, went to eat and drink, came back and it pinpointed my EXACT location...PERFECT!
I only charged the phone for about an hour and I forgot to recharge it. After running the program, it stayed alive for about 14 hours. Not bad since I forgot to fully charge it. I have the i425t, it was easy as hell to install and get everything up and running. I have everything already to install it in my car but I need to get that other part to hardwire it. I'm not asking about details on how to install or what you did for installation. I want to know about the program and how it works. I'd really like it if someone were to let a friend drive their car around the area and you just track it from home with your cell or online. Want to know how fast it transfers the data of location.
it only updates every few minutes, so if the thief is on the go, you're pretty much fucked, kinda... we'll do some testing to see how accurate it is in general in the next couple days.

according to the boost mobile site, the paygo basic plan does not provide free web usage, in fact it is 35 cents a day.
no one has explained how you are boosting up for $10 bux every 90 days, and running that fakegps without eating away your minutes (or whatever).
either the fakegps doesnt use the web at all, or theres some details someone left out. just saying.

bah humbug, I should have read the entire honda-tech thread
when you activate, there's a box to check for the data plan
i accidently checked it :( so it charges me .35 cents per day
they say it still works even though you don't check it
when I bought my phone, it only came with $5 of service so I think I'm gonna go and try to buy a new sim card and reactivate it without checking that box

this is something i was wondering too. i unchecked the web usage box to avoid the flat fee. but this thing CLEARLY uses google maps, on the phone. and it points out points of interest for some reason. but i just checked my boost balance and it's still five bucks. i'll check it again after 24 hours to see if it's doing web usage.

even if the gps was off by a mile, i would prefer to know that my car is located at a certain square mile location then have no idea whatsoever, i would just go to that area myself and drive around all day till I spotted it, call all my buddies to search too..cant be that hard to search 1 mile with lets say 3-6 friends
wouldn't it be fun to find your stollen car, with some looser and have the satisfaction of beating him to a pulp..then call the cops on him after?

If the minutes are wiped after not using for 90 days, could you just pull it out after maybe like 80 days or something on one of the times you are checking to see if its still working and just call your regular cell phone for a minute or two? I guess you could save ~$30 a year, assuming this whole rig works for an entire year, gps site and all...

Exactly. One thing to keep in mind is that if your network has more towers the better it will show your position (more accurate). With my verizon phone it shows my position with in about 25ft give or take. Which is about all you need to find your car.

Busted said it was a few minutes of a delay, but from one of his posts I got that it puts a dot on the tracking screen if you've stopped for small period of time. Though don't quote me on this seeing as I really don't know much about the program.

update on the "monthly" charges ?
brokeAs240sx
07-21-2008, 04:43 PM
oh yeah. you need to activate the phone and keep the minimum minutes on it. apparently boost will wipe the minutes every 90 days if it goes unused. as far as i can tell, the minimum is ten dollars, maybe five? $40 a year isn't bad though. and the phone comes with ten dollars' worth preloaded, so you're good for 90 days out of the box.
Actually, no. I did the research on this a while back. With boost mobile & the tracking stuff you'd want, it will cost $30 a month, more or less - you need the txting/internet option, which will be about $1 a day. The exact #'s/pricing may have changed by now because boost mobile updates prices every so often. Several years ago when boost mobile first came out, this gps tracking system was much more affordable.
For those concerned about battery life, details, logistics, etc - you can find very comprehensive write ups describing hard-wiring, tracking, etc on google.
For what it is, it's not bad.

The question I ask, is what if you don't get service in certain areas? Does this still work if roaming?

what could you do? tell the police "my gps says the car is at this address, think you can go check it out if i give it to you? uhh after your donut break of course if you dont mind =p "
Or go yourself hoping to find it? seems most of the horror stories cars are recovered in outsiding cities.
This is my concern. If you inform the police, will they actually look into it? I know Lojack works directly with the police

Would have posted sooner but didn't see this thread till now.
I got the motorola i415 and did this a LONG time ago... gps updates suck, so I quit playing with it. (just looked at the time stamps, 2 years ago)
Made it work on my own server where I also registered with google so I could use their maps...
GPS Tracker (http://www.quickesthosting.com/tracker/)
Everywhere you see the red arrow is where it got a gps update, and the phone was sitting on my dash to get the best view of the sky.
I saw some one ask if it worked roaming, well it worked for me in Mexico (sorry this one doesn't have the arrows, its older code) http://www.quickesthosting.com/tracker/index2.php
oh and if I remember right, ran out of power in mexico (no charger)

So whats the scoop on your balance??? Sounds like it might cost in excess of $10 a month. Might not be worth it.

I remember it costing $26 and it didn't use any minutes, free data access. Just had to buy the smallest refill card every month because you loose you minutes and need to keep the phone activated. It's been so long ago tho. This was with boost mobile. As for getting the software on the phone, I don't remember but mologo or whatever it was called had forums and instructions back then. If I remember right, I just went on ebay, got the cable and then ran some java program that did the rest. Find a phone with good gps tho... this one i remember putting it on the seat and it quit getting gps signal. Really blew.

i have an idea. keep the phone in ur car with a charge. if your car gets stolen call boost mobile and put minutes on your phone :)
that way its not 30 bucks a month. its 30 bucks to get your car back :D

My question is the same as mr.jdm, if minutes can be renewed over the internet can't you just let the minutes expire and just add them if you end up misplacing your car? :)

YEP! i researched a tad bit after i posted that. im going to go by one and test it out as well.
if you let the minutes run out you can call boost mobile and reactivate. it takes 2 hours to reactivate the phone. it would be the worst 2 hours of your life but hey! look at it this way. if you have your car stolen you can have it back in 2 hours (if its not stripped out yet) and you dont have to pay a fee every month

No monthly subscription needed for Xact’s personal GPS tracker - SlashGear (http://www.slashgear.com/no-monthly-subscription-needed-for-xacts-personal-gps-tracker-0929669/#more-29669)
Looks promising, and might end up cheaper in the long run because of no monthly.
