the "$30" Ghetto Lojack thread
Meet BloJack(tm).
i put the $30 in quotations because you're really looking at about 60 with tax and all that, plus phone prices have gone up. maybe if you find some old ass phone on craigslist you could do it for $30, but i'll be using new shit. i know this has been discussed in other threads, but i feel it should have its own thread, especially considering how jam packed the stolen goods forum is. Ghetto Lojack. you take a Boost Mobile GPS-enabled phone, load some software onto it that allows you to track the phone on your computer, and then leave it on and charging in your car. every 90 days you'll need to add minutes ($10 worth? unclear at this point). you'll need: -Boost Mobile GPS-enabled phone (Target sells the i425t for 39.99) -mini-usb cable (to load the software to the phone. you probably have one for a digital camera or another phone or an mp3 player or whatever. if you don't, you have a friend who does, so don't buy one) -car charger (you can get a mini-usb car charger at walmart and anywhere else for under ten dollars) -add-on 12v plug (hardwire in your car to plug this thing in) you'll need to download software from: http://www.mologogo.com/ to use on your phone. load it up, set it up, and turn it on. the phone has to be on with the application running at all times, so you'll want to hardwire that in your car in a discreet location. then you can track your car when it gets jacked on the website. the end. i'll update with my own experience when i set this up with the i425t. here are some threads on other forums about this setup. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=154516 http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2058648&page=1 and here's the phone i'll be using. it has a nice flat back just begging for some velcro. i'll pick this phone up in the next few days and rig it up for use, see how long the battery lasts without being plugged in so i can decide between constant power or accessory power, and so on and so forth.

it updates on the site every 2-8 minutes. there's probably better software out there with a less fruity name, i'm guessing. i'll look around

oh yeah. you need to activate the phone and keep the minimum minutes on it. apparently boost will wipe the minutes every 90 days if it goes unused. as far as i can tell, the minimum is ten dollars, maybe five? $40 a year isn't bad though. and the phone comes with ten dollars' worth preloaded, so you're good for 90 days out of the box.

When I first read this I thought to myself, "This is all good and stuff, but there's no insurance on your car like you'd have with LoJack". Then I researched LoJack and realized they don't provide insurance either.
This is an epic idea. |

Wire the power cord for the phone to a power supply with a Toggle switch so the phone isn't constantly charging (Cant be good for battery) and you can keep it hidden somewhere with hard accessibility yet still be able to charge it secretly. Only problem is if you can't add minutes online and have to use the phone to add them.
Just a idea... |

like busted said just rig a charger up so it can be in there at all times and not risk settin it all up to have it stolen while your gps is chargin. that would suck.

oh, and you can "reboost" on boost mobile's website, so no real need to dig the phone out of its hiding spot to add minutes.

I can not wait until somebody actually recovers their car due to this. Post up your story it should be pretty swell.

what could you do? tell the police "my gps says the car is at this address, think you can go check it out if i give it to you? uhh after your donut break of course if you dont mind =p "
Or go yourself hoping to find it? seems most of the horror stories cars are recovered in outsiding cities.

could it be possible to wire the phone charger to an illumination wire? That way it only charges when you turn the light switch over and not all the time.

question....does the phone need to be on in order to track it?... or just have some battery power. cuz that would affect how you'd need to charge it.
most phones will only stay in standby for like 3 days....but if you could leave it turned off then you'd be set |
