View Full Version : Expensive Clutches

I was talking to a friend earlier tonight about the importance and/or application of expensive, "high performance" clutches and it led me to an interesting conclusion:

I don't need a 600 dollar clutch!

Unless, of course, someone here can convince me otherwise. I do no drag racing whatsoever (I don't see the point) and am not into dropping the clutch... so why bother?
the only time that I do 'abuse' my clutch to any extent is when I go canyon carving. Multiple downshifts, double clutching and relatively hard shifting (nothing like the dragstrip, though) is all my clutch will see, really. I feel that my stock clutch performs adequately.

That, and I'm on my stock, 155hp engine with no mods.

i did the same thing. i went to autozone and got a $100 clutch kit. pressure plate, disc, tools, bearings, all i needed. works fine for all that massive power of........ 155 hp!

just a side note but double clutching does the least amount of damage to your clutch of any kind of shifting b/c when double clutching properly you are rev matching... there is almost no friction b/w the clutch and flywheel once you've rev matched.

you are a hundred percent correct though. the oem clutch will do the job as long as you aren't beating on it, and slippnig the clutch a lot. Once the clutch is holding the flywheel, it's not gonna let go unless you have more power than it is rated to handle or its worn out.

I would like to have a SPEC stage two b/c I like haveing a very precise stiff clutch that I can beat on a little if I want, and not have to worry about it heating up and not grabbing as hard as I like. When on the track my clutch does start to slip a bit, but only mildly, and only b/w shifts. My clutch is also fairly old soo.. The SPEC is by no means is $600. I believe enjuku sells them for around ~$280 or something..

spec 2 is NOT stiff...not much different from stock.

My clutch is slipping slightly after my trip to VIR. My question is w/ the SR though, I am probally making 215 lb/ft of tourque. What kind of clutch should I replace the current one with? Taking into account that road racing is the only time I really get on the clutch.

whatever you do, don't get a 6 puck clutch for daily driving! not saying it hasn't been done, but it's not the funnest experience.

Yes.. that all works in theory, but I'll be the last to claim that I double clutch perfectly every time...

I know it's not stiff, but it is more capable than the OEM clutch. I wasn't meaning stiff in the "clutch pedal won't go down" sense.

Spec star stage two. Great clutch. Next meet I'll let you try it out to see how you like it. Reasonably priced also.

So what's a good clutch if I do kick the clutch quite a bit?

An ORC or OSGiken clutch should meet your requirements... basically, anything that costs $600 or moer.
What do you drop/kick/abuse the clutch for?

The SPEC stage 3 clutch can handle 347 lbft, which is plenty for the SR20 and it still has a sprung hub for smoother engagement.

you might also want to check out Fresh Alloy.. TY Yapp is using a 240mm Flywheel from the KA24E truck, and a clutch to match, and says it gives a LOT more torque handling ability, and feels like stock.. something like 500ft lb. you might PM him..

wow, that sounds interesting; I've never heard of using a truck KA's flywheel.
What's the stock clutch diameter? I imagine it would be rather hard to find a performance clutch for a nissan TRUCK though, eh?

(from TY on FreshAlloy)
Design Product of Huntington Beach, (714) 892-1513 has a 16v KA flywheel that takes the 240mm clutch/pressure plate.

Clutch? Whatever flirts my fancy... Ranging from Nismo (280ZX Turbo) to actual truck clutch (aka DPro)... I'll most likely end up using the ACT street clutch with it's 400ft-lb torque capacity. If I need a bit more at lesser price, there's a 500ft-lb truck clutch available... hehehe... Basically, any 240mm clutch application for Nissan is fair game, and that includes the NA Z32s...

I have the ACT 6-puck copper and it is miserable street driving. It is either engaged or not...no middle. Great for launching though and will hold sick HP.

I hope so because it needs to hold this...

Don't bother asking about the torque curve. It vanished on us for some reason. damn dyno-gremlins.
