I know we have many music threads already, but I'm actually looking for some help specifically with some good reggae music. The the shit that people in Jamaica actually listen to. When we were there I heard all kinds of good shit, but didn't really ask about it when we were there.
I know Bob Marley and the Wailers...
Any other real good stuff?
There's a song from Marked for Death that is real cool.

Real Reggae music...NOT REGGAETON you fuckin idiot. I'm talking the real shit FROM JAMAICA. If you learned how to read, you probably wouldn't have more red spots below your name then your moms tampon on a "light day" a month before she regretfully got pregnant with you.

From the soundtrack, outside of that song, no.
But watch the movie again.
When they're in the Benz in Kingston, there is a song playing called "Bashment Time," by Frisco Kid, the part where DMX shoots the guy with the Mohawk, the song is "The Right Man," also by Frisco Kid, both of them are on one album.
Another song to check into is the one they were playing at the club in Jamaica, it was a Mr. Vegas song, "Sucky Ducky" was the name of the song.
I actually watched the credits to the movie to find the names of those songs and acquire the CDs that they were on.

Hey Phlip, I mentioned Jimmy Cliff. Any idea if he's any good. I got his name off of Amazon's page for the Marked for Death soundtrack. A couple of the reviews on there mentioned he is really good.

I ought to ban you for forgetting Buju, I have ALL of his albums, I would go as far as to call him my favorite Reggae artist. I met him back in 2000 after a show in Charlotte, he is actually a REALLY nice person, he offered to sign my copy of "Unchained Spirit." That CD is locked away now and I bought a new copy the next day to actually remain in the collection.

Thanks man. My wife and I listen to Reggae weekly. We just love it for chillin, cookin, and drinkin.
We wanna go back to Jamaica again real bad.
It's funny, every time we go we get back and we're so satisfied and we say we don't have to go back for a few years or whenever. Then a couple months goes by and we keep talking about how beautiful it is and then we start planning on going again. We probably won't make it back this year, but who knows. We didn't think we would go last year either.

Shottas is one of those movies that the underground/bootleggers forced the mainstream too notice and eventually release... I'd had a burned copy of it since like late 03, and wasn't able to own it on DVD until like christmas season 06... I still watch that movie all the time, I think I will watch it again this weekend just for the hell of it.

I can't believe not too many people knows what ROOTS REGGAE is all about which is why my buddies and I started a ROOTS REGGAE band that I ended up leaving a year later due to focusing on my career, but they still play, so check them out; they're really good and original.
myspace.com/soulutionaries
I definitely would recommend you to check out Tommorrow's Bad Seeds because I played with them years back like waaaaay before they thought of their band name and I really enjoyed jamming with them. Although their music isn't roots reggae, the foundation of their music is based on reggae while adding a pop-like culture which intertwined the gap between the roots reggae generation and our generation.
Here are some real roots reggae artists:
Alton Ellis
Arthur "Duke" Reid
Bob Andy
Horace Andy
The Blues Busters
Dennis Brown
Burning Spear
The Ethiopians
The Gladiators
Humble Soul
The Congos
Seeed
Gregory Isaacs
Jah Cure
King Tubby
Jacob Miller
Misty in Roots
and basically anyone from Trojan Records is goood. Also, try searching ROOTS REGGAE in any major search engines, so y'all can educated yourself about what generation we missed.
PS, try to watch the next SOULUTIONARIES show and say what's up to me :)

JAH! RASTA FARI...
I have a TON of roots reggae on my computer, and a lot of it is just so unpolished/sloppy and musically boring that i don't care for it too much.
granted, there is also a ton of GREAT stuff. It just seems to be a lot more hit or miss with that stuff.
but it layed the foundation for what reggae has evolved to today (more like the 90's).....and for that reason i respect it. It's also fun to listen to the old reggae and hear a bunch of stuff that modern artists have sampled
PS, i'm checking out the soulutionaries right now ;)

ooooh yeeeeeah! i forgot to mention the skatalites. Soulutionaries opened for the Skatalites in many venues and the most recent one was Scotland Yard in Canoga Park a few weeks ago. Skatalites is one of my musical influences and they are really cool peeps. I got to jam with them a few times which was one of the best moments of my life. Soulutionaries is fun to watch live because you get to see exactly what's going on and how they make sounds out of their instruments especially when they jam in Dub Reggae.

oh it's reggae.....good call mah man. They're definitely one of my favorite bands (at the moment).
Their sound isn't too groundbreaking or complex, but it's got a nice feel to it and they have a lot of sick songs
I INSIST: DOWNLOAD THE ALBUM "COURAGE TO GROW" - REBELUTION

Yeah, I'm an old timer and music was my minor in college. I made sure I network as much as I can while I was in college and I got to meet many cool peeps. One of the cool peeps I met when I was networking was the singer of Tomorrow's Bad Seed like back in 2002. He was a singer that competed in one of those American Idol type of singing contest, but he got kicked out because of smoking herbs lol. Anyways, one day we were blazing in his back-house, I picked up his guitar, started jamming with different chords while messing around with different ways to strum it, he started freestyle singing, his homie who is now the guitar player for Tomorrow's Bad Seed jumped in the jamming session, I dropped the guitar and hopped on the keyboard, and it went on from there which is pretty much how Tomorrow's Bad Seed started, but I didn't continue playing with them because I had other priorities in life. Now, I'm hitting myself for not growing with them.
whenever you're in LA, just hit me up. I and I will jam out rock steady mon! JAH! Rasta Fari.... Allahmerci

Wouldn't it be more advantageous to come to SoCal? Beaches, babes, it'd be like a vacation that kills brain cells.
Plus I have the Jam garage, I love having a dad that is a musician.

Ok, you've convinced me. Shitty part about the desert is the lack of water. However, the lack of clothing on women is something that we both can enjoy.
What do you play? I play everything (everything worth playing anyways lol....drums, bass, guitar)....so i'm flexible
Seriously tho...I might be going on a ride to socali with some homies sometime within the semester. I'll let ya know!

I play the drums and only the drums. Starting to learn a bit of guitar though.
Playing the drums makes travelling a pain in the ass. Although I could fit my e-drums in a suitcase if I wasn't lazy.

ha! story of my life. hauling drums is such a pain in the ass. you got some nice e-drums? The only e-drums i've even considered playable are those like $3k Rolands with the mesh heads. Acoustic drums for life

so, it's been 4 years!
what's everyone been listening to?
I've gotten away from the traditional reggae & 3rd wave stuff and started listening to more Ska and Rocksteady. It was basically the precursor to Jamaican reggae in the 60s.
The slackers are amazing and completely underrated

Oh shit....white people are talking about reggae... :faint:
I think we should clear up the different geners first. Because the next person that sites Marley as the best reggae is gonna get the baby powder.
Most old heads from the yard (that's Jamaica ,for you outsiders) don't even like Marley. You guys took Marley and Pac...keep em, lol.
That said.
Red rat
Movado
Mr. Vegas
Buju Banton
Spraggah Benz
Lee "scratch"
Elephant Man
Damien Marley
Beenie Man
Even Foxy Brown had some good ones.
Theres a ton of stuff out there no matter what genere.
Most "reggae" is their equivalent to our gospel though so remember that.
