Hey guys I saw the roler paint thread and it inspired me to paint my car. I mean yeah the roller paint looks clean and all but I am not paitent enough to wait 7+ days just for paint so Im paitning my car. I got a gun, and a compressor, and I got access to all the materials I can ever need. so WTF why not do it right huh?? the cool thing its all going to be done in my garage. this is day one. I got most of the dings out and sprayed coat number one of primer to let it dry overnight

So you're not not painting it with a roller? Double negative... have fun with your roller job :ughd: haha :)

I was in a similar situation, so I just said fuck it and painted it. No prior experience or anything, but it turned out pretty all right. Good luck bro...

I just finished painting my car and what a pain in theass. it turned out all right but i still have a lot of color sanding to do. I still saved my self a fortune. I did all the body work and masked the car. and had a body shop spray the car. still what a disaster. oh yeah good luck.

Yo man, careful using the newspaper as a cover, the paint may wet the paper enough to have the ink run through and you might get paint all over your windows. Well, juss' lettin you know, goodluck with the job!

ThatGuy
10-15-2006, 06:44 AM
Yes, use masking paper, or paper grocery bags. Newspaper is too thin. Also, make sure to get all the hard to reach places wih your primer and paint i.e. the area around your lisence plate you missed the first time.

Are you painting the door jambs? Trunk? Engine bay? Did you roll your fenders before you started painting?

Hey guys thenkas of rthe support..
Midnight Zenki: I'm using a big ass compressor probably about 6ft tall. (40-60 gal maby?) and a gravity feed Paitn gun not sure what brand and specs but works well

as far as using the news paper for masking its only for primer, I knwo i missed the licence plate area he he woops. btu I looked over all my mistakes in the first spray and it turned out Ok.

That Guuy: yeah Door jambs, Trunk and Engine bay are painted already no fender rolling for me I dun got money for that big of a baller rims yet. and here are some updates on day two:

afyter letting the White Primer dry overnight I sprayed some grey bottle primer over it like so:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y196/FairladyZ32/Picture033.jpg

after that dries i Blocked it with 150 gritt to expose all of the uneven ness and to my surprice the primer filled in most of th uneveness due to them being so small.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y196/FairladyZ32/Picture038.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y196/FairladyZ32/Picture037.jpg
others I had to puddy them in (still waiting for bondo to dry as I type)
but thre was not much to do bumping dings out wise. I hope to do my second coat of prymer today but today with Polyprimer. then Tomarrow PAINT!!! :)

Looking good. I hope you cover all the shit on the side because it WILL get full of paint dust. Trust me, that shit gets everywhere, i know from painting my bike frame. Luckily it doesnt stick, its just like dust, but it's still a major PITA.

Anyways good luck with painting it, its a long ass process!

Even if you don't have rims that require rolling, it's always a good idea to roll before getting painted, so you don't have to deal with it down the road...

Yes, this is why I mentioned it. Not for current wheels, but for the future. It's always worth it to plan ahead.

Im assuming you put a filter on your compressor before the spray gun, otherwise you can wind up with moisture in your spray

before you paint your car, if your picky about your floor, try wetting down your floor so that the paint doesnt stick to the floor. and then once it dries you can just sweep everything off. btw why did you unmask your car if your not done painting it? what dupont paint are you using? hopefully not centari lol

Alright day three is where. basicalyl i had to move my car my neighbors are assholes. I could not finish in my garage cause they said they could smell everithing (ok buddy I got filters int ehvents of my garage and i sprayed with the garage closed) anyways moved the car to my boss;s house and i did the final prep work there. I basically blocked the entire car with 400 grit, removed all teh locks and antena. filled in all the bullshit scratches with puddy and well basically checked everithing. the car feels like butter its soooo smooth (other than the body line going down the middle) u can see a reflection from the primer after I washed off all the dust and sanded primer formthe surface of the car. tomarrow I mask everithing. and clean it all to spray it. here are th eupdated pics

I don's know what PSI I was shotting it at but enought that the paint was nice and thin the paint itself dosent have orange peel its all on the clear coat (I shot the first coat normal and the second coat was heavy so I could sand it with 1500 then 2000.

whoah, that orange peel is bad! I can see it in this shot on the whole left side. yes orange peel. it shall be gone in 2 weeks! then I can put on my emblems.

I'm looking at the Silvia rear emblem. the Club K's Side emblem. and possibly the SR20DET one. any recomendations or opinions. I don't like the plain shaved emblem look.

motegineon
10-26-2006, 10:33 AM
i would get the k's emblems on the fenders and then Silvia on the rear inbetween the taillights..

so u just sprayed 2wice and with the last coat u wetsanded 1500 then 2000...and then sprayed 2 layer of clear? will you explain colorsanding and buffing, im gettin ready to paint my car soon as well so it would help me out, thanks.

no I sprayed everithing no wetsanding in betwen, base, color, color, clear clear. most of or all teh orange peel is on the clear since the clear was sprayed on at low PSI so it would be nice and thick. after th epaint cures (2weeks) I will be wetsanding with 1500. wash the car then wetsand with 2000, then buff, polish, wax.

OK so i know this thread is older than $#!+ but here it is. I finally got around to color sanding and polishing my car this weekend. paint turned out great after all. the passenger side fender was too bad on orange peel that I sanded through the clear. so it will be repreped, and resprayed to be orange peel free. other than that I got the GTR wing on, and I'm selling a pair of Canadian Spec Side skirts if anyone is interested, they are flat black. PM me on those. and well now for the pics:

Looks good. Once mines back together its going to get painted black. Im geting ready to shoot the engine bay Toyota Blue right now. Anyways when you were doing the body work, you should have "shaved" the rear side markers. Since its RHD it would of gave it more of a authentic look. But it looks better with out them anyways.

Yeah I did a 15minute wait, between coats. then a 1 hour wait betwen color and clear. and another hour between clears. as far as the rear side marker. I converted it to a blinker. so I'm cool with it being there. that was my plans from the start.
