to me its a stock hood, its not that heavy and it looks great. you can get a oem hood on carbon fiber but then you have the chance of it flipping open on the freeway.

^^^ um oem hood totally blows. weighs like 50 pounds lol
carbon fibers only flip open on the highway if you install them the wrong way, ie no hood pins.
just find a cheap fiberglass hood with a big vent. people worry so damn much about if the vent placment is "functional" but honestly it makes no difference, all different brands are in decent enough places, either way you are going to lower your underhood temps.
the only hood i would highly suggest you DO NOT buy is VIS. total dumpster trash

anything with vents that are raised or have slats for a low pressure area over the vents will be best. which, is about every hood on the market.
Not steel is good too, again... every hood on the market.
if I had to pick one Id say koguchi/D-max/Erobon on OEM FG even that nasty looking one from andys autosport would do a really good job at getting rid of heat.

dude oem hoods are the shit!! i love them cause it takes like a brick to dent it.

true the oem is great, and the stock one is clean! i like the lines on the middle
but yes your right, the chance for flipping on a cf is bad! plus carbon fiber is expensive now! -=o(

hehe, get best of both worlds ...
vents of the fiberglass to release heat, w/ the durability of a oem hood and fitment of a oem hood... hehe
i wish
__
ya your right about the placement of the vents are pretty much just release heat either way
the only hood i would highly suggest you DO NOT buy is VIS. total dumpster trash
I have a VIS CF OEM type hood. Wasn't bad, just a lil fitament issues that couldn't be resolved with some time.

the best hoods for our cars is having one in the first place, if you like steel, cut out the skeleton to lighten it, and mold or rivet in a hood vent, done and done, cheaper and still functional like the CF ones, sure its not as light as those, but look at it like this, it still can take a beating, and doesn't require hood pins.

stock hood is pretty light....i dont know why people say its so 'heavy'. who cares? its not like a 10 pounds is going to help you out THAT much. Most of the people that buy hoods anyways want them for the look, rather than functionality.

well if you want to make your front end light from the weight already caused by the engine, then sure.
And the OEM hood is heavy as fuck...my dads landrover hood aint even as heavy...

Where do you people plan on driving where you worry about the hood being damaged?
How much do the bugs in your area weigh? 15lbs? haha.

06-28-2006, 09:23 AM
stock hood is heavy as hell, you loose like 30 pounds off the front end by swapping
Best hoods ever..
buy a used CF one that has started to fade. Buy a seperate vent and locate it where you see fit, and rivet it on. Paint whole hood. secure with hoodpins
You end up with a light vented hood for cheap that looks good once painted.
This is what I did, minus the venting.

now where would i go to buy a used cf hood?
browse the classifieds, or have friends with 240's who are show cars, and want to replace the hood when it fades.:bigok:

+1 for OEM hood, i think it's not that heavy tho, i love it anyway

Not a big fan of Oem. There is a significant difference in stock to CF for sure. Any Vented CF Hood FTW. Saves weight and heat temp drop.

Yeah,I mean when it comes to a vented hood as long as its good quality and you get some real good quality hood pins, then I'd say go for it. I personally have had bad expreinces with fiberalss hoods shaking at highway speeds, but I don't think CF ones tend to do that as bad?
If your going with a vent design, who really cares if it has hood pens,I mean most vent hoods are riceriffic IMHO anyway,so the hood pins aren't really that bad.

if you're after just looks, get whichever one. if you're after function, stay stock and spend the money elsewhere, a lighter hood is so far down the priority list. It's not like the underhood temperature is a problem with a stock hood (with most cases) and I bet the average zilvian can't tell the difference if their front end is 30 lbs lighter... people take things so far out of context its ridiculous sometimes.

um CF hoods are made of fiberglass with a sheet of carbon fiber over the top and then covered in resin, same materials
hood pins are not "riceriffic" they are a saftey device. if you have a composite hood and you arent using hood pins, you are an idiot. it dosent matter if you think they look good or bad, the only reason they exist is to keep your hood out of your windshield

By the time you reach that level where you need an after market hood your car probably isn't street legal. So unless you have a track car it's a waste of money imo.

Well if you read my post correctly then you would realize I never said anything about the constuction of C-F hoods, nor did I say I had personally used one to say they were different from regular fiberglass hoods...but then again I never called hood pins riceriffic either...you might know hoods, but next time learn to read. I said once that it would be okay to get good quality hood pins, and I said again that 'hood pins werent bad' . How is that calling them riceriffic?

I ordered the Masa fiberglass vented hood, it should be here in a few weeks. I would post pics but for some reason, it won't let me. It's the one on the black and red S15 with the 180sx front clip.......and yeah I will be using hood pins!

you said fiberglass hoods shake on the highway, and carbon fiber ones dont, which makes no sense, because they are both made of fiberglass, and if you have hoodpins installed correctly the hood wont move at all

I cut out the skeleton of stock hood and used hood pins and I like it. The shop painted the underside so it looks good too. Saves weight over its original form, enough that I used to remove the hood by myself when needed.
I had a cf hood long time ago too, i made a idiot mistake by not latching the hood pins in a hurry to go leave with a chick . hahaha
Yah if i recall, you can see any resin glass hood flex or vibrate when driving, but its nothing to worry about.

Hood pins are gay. If you have a well built hood, it shouldn't fly off. I rocked a VIS Hood with no pins, pimptastic!

I never said cf ones did/didn't:fruit:
Besides the cars I have ridden in with FG hoods and hoodpins DO shake on the highway ,but they are also not nissans.
Damn this thread makes me want to get a vented hood, lol :ugh:

there's an edit button for a reason....
and for anyone considering cf/fg hoods, get hoodpins. just because someone ran a few years without hood pins with no problems, doesn't mean it won't happen to you. the latch on composite hoods is not attached securely enough to trust it completely.
