lol....I never knew those things were FAST! I've never seen one move that way...but I guess for the majority of animals/insects, when it comes to food, instincts come into play.

Not fake enough for many on the island :) silly people. As for the fear that most have of the mongoose.... I don't understand myself completely, I can only imagine it's because of the dark color, the fact that they are quite active at night, they move so fast and are considered to be a rabies threat, so basically the bastard darts out, bites you in the ass and leaves you with the question of whether or not you have been infected.

Yeah and they did do a job on the local reptile population and have since moved on to chickens and the like.

When I was on my honeymoon, we had a time-share condo, and the first day we were there there was a centipede that looked just like that one in the living room, probably 6-7 inches long, though half as thick. Gave me the heebie-jeebies, just crawled behind the tv and never saw it again, though that didn't necessarily make me feel any better while we were there.

wow i never knew a centipede can grow so large. largest ive seen is 3 inches. seeing how big that sucker is i wanna see what bug can actually take that centipede on 1v1. dont think many can, actually i cant even think of any that can. wow amazing...

if u saw the camelspider eating a lizard video ... u know those 2 are a good match

Eternal_240Sx
03-27-2006, 08:34 PM
yea but im willing to bet money on the centipede. Camel Spiders are fast but that centipede looks pretty armored up.

koukidough
03-28-2006, 12:16 AM
damn that camel spider is also huge. will be a good match but i read up on this giant centipede. they got razor sharp legs so if they walk over human skin you will get little cut trails. also if aggravated they can release poison from each tip of their legs. their poison is not enough to kill humans though but good enough for small insects and lizards. so i would think +1 for the centipede vs the camel spider

i think a better match for the centipede is an asian forest scorpion, they have strong venom that can actually kill a human and grows up to 6 inches. they also have armor plates like the centipede. you know with those thick claws im betting that it can snap a centipede in half with one snip

I saw in a video in my animal adaptations class (hard to believe it was a college course) where a wild mouse (or something that looked like a mouse) owned a poison centipede.

I fucking hate centipedes. I've probably killed over 100 in my life.

My whole leg was dead for the day(I was bit on a toe) and it hurt pretty bad(my leg and toe).

Actually i learned in hawaiian history while living in hawaii that, mongooses are day time animals that come out in the day and sleep in the night. Native people brought the mongoose to hawaii to take care of the rat problem but little did they know the rat and mongoose would hardly come in contact with each other since rats come out at night and mongooses in the day. So then the mongoose started eating native hawaiian birds such as the state bird the Nene goose and thats why now they are near extinction. but to stay on subject that centipede is huge!!! i used to see them all the time in hawaii but not that big. I got stung by a baby centipede and damn did it hurt. my leg swelled up like i was elephant man. haha well not that big but pretty bad

They say even small centipedes eat spiders... IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MAKE US LIKE CENTIPEDES?

BTW: Who here also sleeps on their side and makes sure both ears are covered at night so centipedes don't sneak in your ears? Maybe i'm just paranoid. :ughug:

That may be, but I have seen the critters dart across my path at night..... so they are active enough, perhaps it's unique to the PR mongoose community, we do have quite the coke trade on the island and with enough of that, normally diurnal creatures can be convinced otherwise.
