Davis/Sacramento: Need URGENT help to press in stud on front hub

My friend, OptionZero, broke a damn stud trying to take off a stubborn Kyokugen lug nut.

He needs immediate help replacing it. Can anyone in the Davis or Sacramento area help him out?

Help as far wut? Take the old stud out or put the new one in??? If it doesnt seem to fit, you prolly got the wrong stud. S14 front studs are different from the rears so make sure u got the right one. You dont have to press it in, put a washer and use the lug to pull it in.

we'll probably try it out tomorrow morning. In the meantime...

1) Do we just pound out the old/broken stud with a hammer?
2) Is the back of the stud accessible without removing anything but the wheel?

If this is for the front, you need to remove the caliper by unbolting the 2 19mm bolts just behind the rotor. The rotor should be easily be pulled out after removing the caliper. Hammer out broken stud and insert new stud and use a spacer or some sort big enough to fit onto the stud. Make sure you have room to screw in a lug nut so you can use it to pull the new stud tightly into the hole. Once you have done that, check to see if the whole stud had made it all the way in. If so, just put everything back. Good luck.

Yah dude, I actually put the rotor on and pulled it through like that.

Works best if you have an open ended lug nut (so the stud can extend properly).. and then just grab a lug wrench and go at it.

Do it by hand or you'll regret it later. Impacting them is normally why they break.

"Ghetto" way.
Hammer old stud out.

*I have Z32 brakes up front, don't know if there is room with stock calipers.*

Slide new stud behind rotor(with caliper on), and grease up a few large washers, and use an impact to "press" it back in.

Done.

Oh yeah, if this is for the rears, same scenario but I forgot if the caliper bolts are 17mm or 14mm. And also, make sure the ebrake is down.

yo, thisi s the guy with the actual problem, my internet was down so TUrdz was gracious enough to help me post...and use his comfy garage

I had been using Kyokugen lug nuts and overtorqued them apparently (~80lbs, should be closer to 70ish I guess? maybe 65? i gotta check the box)

I got 4 lug nuts off, the 5th one wouldnt' come off at all because thew eight of the wheel created arseloads of tension. Forcing it is what resulted in a stud snapping.

One lugnut has the stud still in it, so i'll have to drill the remnants out or something. FOr the time being I"ll go back to stock lug nuts to avoid problems.

air chisel it out if u could... i know that les schwab sells open ended lug nuts for a good price.. i use them alot...

i got a bunch of extra front studs at home home if u need one... but u can get them easily at like kragen or autozone. just make sure its the right thread

No need to air chisel. Just grab the wheel with the rest of the lug nuts off, and tug on your wheel until the lug nut breaks off. It only took me about 4-5 good tugs... just do a shake test on your car to make sure its not going to fall off the jackstands.

it's super easy. just do it.

Like I said...once you get the broken stud off, make sure you got the RIGHT STUD. S14 FRONTS are different from the S14 REARs and all S13s. When i broke a stud, they gave me rears and bitch wouldnt fit. IIRC rears are fatter than the fronts. Actually hey Jon, hit me up if you need studs, im pretty sure i got front studs cuz i swapped my front stocks for longer nismo studs.

i think the frnts are fatter than the rears... i remember i bought fronts on accident to replace my rears.. and they would not fit...
