High Mount Alternative
well i have been searching for an intercooler that i can use as a high mount. I acquired a 335I fmic that seems to fit perfectly inside the core support area. The only problem now is mounting (easy) and piping(meh). My only problem i foresee is sealing the inlet and outlet of the core. They are plastic and prob crack very easy. So if you have any suggestions let me know on this one. This is not to replace any other companies setups nor am i swearing by this setup. Just another alternative for those on a budget not looking ro cut thier bumpers or front "crash bar".

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Treadstone-E...bd702a&vxp=mtr Its just a box of aluminum with a gradual slope to 3" outlet. Easy to make if you own a 3-phase tig |

I use a ARC fmic from a jza70 supra, flipped upside down. Barely fits around the radiator but it works.

While I like being resourceful, you'll spend more time/cash/energy making that fit, rather than just getting a generic ebay aftercooler and installing it normally.

i was actually about to post on this as well. It would actually cost less than buying a HMIC setup from a name brand source. And the 335i intercooler is probably more efficient than a ebay one. No numbers so I can't prove that. However the same cutting and tabbing would have to be done to make it fit as the others. I actually just picked up a smaller FMIC and will angle it so that it will clear my front bumper/fog lights etc without cutting into it.

Those cores are not very good due to their small size. Even at stock 300 bhp to the crank they're overtaxed beyond a short WOT burst. 335's going to slightly larger aftermarket cores pick up lots of power and drop their IATs way down.
Sell it on eBay.

I'd venture to say they are probably on par. OEM intercoolers are designed with cost first, not peformance.

I don't really agree with that at all. I have a 335 and tracked it a few times without upgrade. And it held up just fine on several runs. and 300hp is roughly 70hp more than what my sr has now. I am currently running ER Comp FMIC on the 335 (stage 2+ aggressive) and yes it cools very well. But to say the stock intercooler is inefficient is def not the case for most applications that rarely track or just have a DD. Which is what my s14 is being used for. With that being said if your planning on doing 8 runs and an event each weekend with a 400hp beast…sure this is def not ideal. This is mainly just to replace the gaudy ebay intercooler i currently have to fit a bumper/lip setup without having to cut anything. But as i mentioned before, I did choose to go with a smaller 26x7x2.5 intercooler that should fit just fine angled a bit and allow me to use my current plumbing. |

just buy a vibrant / garret / precision core and do custom end tank
FYI: this picture is with a vibrant core and was good until 550whp ... we upgraded to a garret and we push over700whp now
