I would just get an SR20DET, personally. If you are intent on keeping the SOHC engine, you need to decide what you want to do with it. Do you want to use a turbo, nitrous, build it up to be a fast NA engine, or just a normal rebuild to stock specs?

I would send the block and head to a machine shop to have the cylinders bored to a safe diameter, head decked, and a port job done. Then I would get some higher compression pistons, a cam, and a re- ring kit. Someone else will have to fill in the details about where to get this stuff and what is safe to do.

If you are considering rebuilding the motor yourself then good luck. All I can suggest for a tool is a FSM and tons of tools and experience. I would take it to a professional mechanic.

I can't argue with that because I've yet to have the need for an engine rebuild. When the time comes I will do it myself because I have yet to meet a professional mechanic. The ones I have dealt with charge like they are a professional but can't deliver quality work. Tools are always a good investment, IMO, and the only way to get experience is to get your feet wet.
