What is the difference b/w a 1-way, 1.5-way and 2-way Differential? I have an idea but need clarification.

(I'm thinking about picking up a cusco LSD but wondering which would be better for me. 1-way, or 2-way.)

1-way = locked on acceleration
1.5-way = locked on acceleration and partial lock on decel
2-way = locked on accel and decel

the locking amount depends on breakaway torque (the amount of torque needed to turn one wheel in opposition to another). the higher the breakaway, the longer your car will stay locked in turns, which makes sharp turns more difficult, but drifting much easier. the VLSD for example only has a breakaway of 30 ft-lbs. a KAAZ/Nismo is adjustable by adding clutch disks, but the factory breakaway is in the 100 ft-lbs region. can't remember exactly. oh, and the 2-way is a little bit strange at times because it will keep the wheels locked on deceleration, which means that on the brakes in a tight turn, your inside rear tire is going to be scrubbing like mad. once again, good for drift and track stuff...kinda strange on the street. the 1.5-way is like a 2-way only the decel breakaway is much less.

does that sum it up??

my advice? go find a friend w/ a copy of GT3 and buy your car, set it up similarly, and then try the 3 different diffs. i personally like the 1.5 best.

you're welcome. i learned a lot of that stuff from some 510 racers two weekends ago at blackhawk farms (mostly about breakaway torque). feel free to copy/paste into the FAQ
