This is sooooo my thread.
I listen to alot of obscure emo, indie rock, and the fringe of what some would call pop punk. Other than driving, my favorite thing is to go see a small band rock out at a tiny bar that has the capacity of 50-80 people. This, well this is my music. Hardish Stuff: -The Used (awesome in concert about 5 times as hard as their recorded songs) -Finch (also a good concert) -Taking Back Sunday -Thursday -Senses Fail (so much harder in concert) -At the Drive In -Casket Lottery( I only put them in the hard stuff because of their concert, they went wild. Code Red is one of my all time fav songs) -The Mars Volta (I think this is the same band as At the Drive In) Emo Style bands: -The Get Up Kids (them and weezer pretty much turned emo mainstream) -Park( if you ever get a chance to see Park live GO!) -The Beautiful Mistake -Billy Music (saw them at a $4 show, it was good stuff) -Soundtrak (Also very good little known band) -Brandtson (Drummer sings, its kinda a shock live) -By a Thread -Cadillac Blindside -Cursive ( may be too whiney for some, but I like the underlying rhythms) -dieradiodie -The Early November -The Elevator Division -Further Seems Forever -Hey Mercedes (One of my all time fav bands, good vocals for an emo band) -Hot Rod Circuit (Another fav band and a must see in concert) -Jawbox -The Jealous Sound (very popy, but in a good way, I enjoy listening to them now, but it would get annoying if they were on the radio) -Mae (Just saw their show a couple weeks ago, very good) -Midtown -Mock Orange (heard one of their songs on Bluetorch TV one day, really good Punk/Emo) -Nada Surf (more grungeish, had a 1 hit wonder "Popular" a while ago, but the rest of their songs are quite good) -Northstar -Ozma (if you like weezer, you will like them, they sound almost exactly the same) -Parkview -Pinback (just got a couple of their cds, good stuff, with a lighter more west coast sound) -Pinehurst Kids -Planes Mistaken For Stars (their old cd was good, then I saw them in concert and they turned into a bunch of crazy *** Rob Zombies) -Reflector -Sense Field (more pop rock, but good in concert) -Too Beautiful To Die (My friend has seen them and said they were awesome in concert, I have heard the songs and they are good) -Twothirtyeight -Vote Toby ( they gave me a free cd, so they get a free plug ) Indie Stuff: -Built to Spill ( I love these guys, they bring in so many different sounds and change melodies often) -Pinback (just got a couple of their cds, good stuff, with a lighter more west coast sound) Slow Stuff: -American Analog Set (very good chill music) -American Football -The Appleseed Cast (very melodic, their concert was something else, it was almost symphonic) -Broken Social Scene -Christie Front Drive -Death Cab For Cutie (also very good chill music) -The Postal Service (weird techno version of Death Cab for Cutie) -The Promise Ring (their old stuff was slow and melodic, new stuff is popy and emo) -Sunny Day Real Estate (old stuff is nice and slow, new stuff is more rock than slow) Pop Punk Stuffs: -NFG( horrible, saw them in concert, all their songs sound the same) -SUM 41( thier old stuff isn't too bad, and they surprised me in concert for not being as pop as they seem) -Blink 182(sadly enough saw their concert with my friends. Cursing is cool kids ) -Alien Ant Farm(dunno if they belong under pop punk, but I saw them in concert and they impressed me) -Fenix TX (The first punkish band I listened to and liked, started all the rest of this for me) -Jimmy Eat World (good stuff) -The Juliana Theory (very similar in sound to Jimmy Eat World) -Mest (although I don't really like all their songs, they have a good fanbase and excellent crowd control, making for good shows) -River City High (these guys ROCK, most down to earth band I have met. They will sit and chill with you while the other bands are playing and sing autographs and such. Have a more rockish sound than the others) -The Starting Line (:ghey: I have a strong dislike for this band, and they always end up playing with good bands that I want to see, so I have seen them like 3-4 times) ... and I'm spent I most likely put bands in the wrong genre/left bands out/ ****ed off people who listen to pop punk. But I truly don't care, this is a list for people to get ideas, and go broaden their Musical Horizons. Go download their songs if you are down with that, but please, if you like the band, go support them by seeing them in concert. Most concerts for this genre are quite cheap, <$12 for most some are free, and the Setlist in Warrensburg, MO has $4 concerts often. -Matt

isnt pop punk an oxymoron? i thought punk was all about being anti-everything. o well what do i know.
i actually like the music but its really the bands themselves that i cant stand sometimes. it seems like some of them are more into the "punk" image <ahem> good charlotte, avril lavigne <ahem> than the music itself. like i said, what do i know.... |

this is my category of music as well... i like most of the bands Rennen listed. the ones that i havent heard, im downloading now! its nice to find out about other music. does anyone like dashboard confessional?? there new cd came out last week, its pretty good, i like it. then there is thursday, they kick some *** too. i think they have a cd coming out later this month. i havent been to a concert since ive bought the 240 sadly. ive spent all my money there. autox is about as often and expensive as a concert so i dont have the bling for both... if i wasnt in to cars, i think id have a band or something instead.

Sum 41
Good Charlotte Blink 182 American Hi-Fi Definitely not punk.... Go to one of their concerts and you'll realize that the swarm of 12 year old girls around you is NOT the "punk" crowd. I had to sit through New FOund Glory's set before seing FINCH.....I hated every minute enough. Enough to throw stuff at them. RENNEN has a Really good list. gotta love the "emo-core" like Finch and Thrice (new cd is great go buy it). Can't forget Pennywise...new album Sept. 9th Authority zero, places to park, pollen, hot water music, face to face, Boy sets fire, AFI still rocks, Lagwagon, Strung out, and last but not least Social D.

i started to listen to postal service like 2 years ago... before they came out and everyone thought it was :ghey: ...
now that they play it on the radio everyone like it... as for sum, blink, and all those other bands, i consider them punk... maybe no the croud that goes with them...but they are... ever since blink came out with that commercial A*s CD enema... every little kid is into them... but their other CD's like chesire cat or dude ranch is something else... rennen thats one hell of a list... theres not one band on that that i havent heard... good taste my man... New Found Glory is cool sometimes... but i love their cover songs... they made me laugh hella hard with the cover to "back that azz up" -ryan

today's punk is nearly not how it was, obviously, people/the world evolves, but imo think punk has lost its soul..... im more geared to the grindcore/crust punk back in the early 80's to mid 80's...hell, even some early 90's punk crust/grindcore were more, how should i say it, true/hardcore? Back when they cared about no money, no big name labels, anti commercialis/capitalism, straight edge, racist, political, vegans, vegetarians, etc...true could be said that these are the extremist of punk, but this is how it started and lasted almost a decade in the UK and USA....there's a fairly good book out, i forgot what its called but it goes in depth alot about hardcore punk/crust/oi/grindcore etc.... saying Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Sum 41 punk is like saying Slipknot, System of a Down, Korn is metal, which is pretty much completely false, and much more int eh category of Mallcore..... to alot of people, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, etc.. can be considered punk cause thats what the mainstream media labels them etc... But lots of diehard true punk fans know and accept the true fact that those bands are no where near their definition and roots of punk... |

Yeah, god forbid anyone put their entire heart and soul into every note of a song. Thats pussy ****. I'm just going to go back and listen to my premanufactured pop from artists who dont even write thier own lyrics and continue to be a true badass
On a side note, I saw The Appleseed Cast again last night. They were awesome like always. They played with Chin Up Chin Up, who were also a damn good indie band, listen to this mp3:http://www.chinupchinup.com/songs/collide.mp3 -Matt
