you need to know the powerbands and at the same time, know how much gas to give before the auto will want to downshift. Most of the time, you can do either of two things:
1) Give it enough gas to where the back is planted and you have your RPMs high enough where the car will not want to downshift to 1st
2) Throw it into 1st if the turn is tight enough.

Most of the time, and very much like MOST sticks, 1st gear isnt a gear you want to get into. With the KA I never used 1st in turns. Since the SR has a higher redline, I've actually been able to use 1st from time to time but its more for fun when I wanna break the back out.

When I would downshift into 1st with the auto, anyone in my car would know this meaned trouble. 1st gear in the auto right before getting into a turn with just a bit of gas = back breaking out.

Like I said, if you want to practice drifting get a manual.. you'll need the clutch pop to break the back end loose.. but if you're canyoning and auto crossing and such, you really dont need it.. you can "get by" with an auto and actually compete a bit with less skilled drivers. The way I see it, if you dont know the track with a auto, you DEFINATELY wont know the track with a manual. Auto's require much less thought and skill to control, so you can actually pay more attention to the track and your line.

Of course, if you're a good manual driver then a manual wont require much effort either.. but i am just speaking generally, most of the people I know (and even folks who have driven stick for over 10 years) dont even know how to heel/toe. Sure, rev-matching.. but no heel/toeing.. thats just "too crazy" for them.

Mine is auto and I've never had any of the issues you people are talking about. I have basic bolt ons, weight reduction, and a rebuilt auto trans. with no governor. I clocked my 0-60 at 8.9 seconds on my cell phone stop watch. That's only 0.6 seconds slower than a 5 speed 240sx (providing the driver of the 5 speed is a good driver). Cornering is exellent, acceleration is allright provided it would be much better with a turbo setup

For "drifting" (20-40mph) I keep it in 2nd (which will start out in 1st but shifts around 15mph or so depending on how hard your gassing it).

For all of my exillerating peel outs and power slides I keep it in 1st. If you want to make a lot of ruckus you can rev it to 4,000RPM and slam it into D for LOTS of smoke. Automatics are wayyyy better for burnouts. I've only done a neutral drop once in front of my old job though because it's probably not too great on the gears.

And for God's sake people...take off that damn overdrive crap! You'll be amazed out the little boost you get. It doesn't shift gears randmly either with it off.

I think thread ressurection is the first step to becoming a non-N00b:

n00b: "They keep telling me to search. Well, this time I will search."

<sound of keyboard typing>

n00b: "Wow, here's the answer to my question. Great! Let me show them that I've learned how to search! Where's the post button?!"

<sound of keyboard typing>

zilvia.net mod: "Hey dumbass, the last post to this thread was April 14th 1968... let it die."

----

Back on topic: I think someone should retrofit an SMG or DSG behind a ka24e!
