Weird steering column/ rack issue

Ok, so here is the story. I used to have a 91 hatch which I sold because of the rust issues here in buffalo. I kept the steering rack and a bunch of other stuff though.

now I bought a 90 coupe from georgia and I go to put the steering column in today and the spline on the steering shaft only goes about a half inch into the u-joint on the rack. (all the bolts are on and tight.) ive removed and replaced the column before and never had a problem.

what could it be?

thanks

last night Iwas looking more at it and is that a slip joint in the column right before it hits the u-joint on the rack?

if so I think mine is frozen and possibly thats the problem?

does anyone want to add their two cents?

Did you take the bolt out before sliding the u-joint on the spline?

sometimes it's easier to loosen the rack bracket bolts to get that spline into the steering u joint.
i just changed my rack a few weeks ago and had no proble. make sure you take the spline lock bolt completely out

Thumbs up

thanks for the help guys, It ended up being that the rack was bolted in first and was rotated back too far.

just loosening the bolts rotating it and then tightening the bolts solved the problem completely
