mild built head and stock bottom end 400hp
*main concern should I at the very minimum, for stock bottom end, replace piston rings*
I'm currently in the process of putting my sr motor back together along with all the goodies I've been gathering. Motor is stock as it sits. Parts ill be installing. -HKS 264 cams -Brian crower springs -Brian crower retainers -Brian crower exhaust valves -Super tech Exhaust valve guides -Super tech Valve stem seals -New oem lifters -Tomei rocker arm stoppers -Tomei FPR -Greddy tdo6 -Greddy SUS exhaust manifold -Greddy external wastegate -Greddy oil pan -Freddy intake manifold -850cc power enterprise injectors -circuit sport fuel rail -ARP head studs -Apexi head gasket 1.5 thickness -Apexi power FC Ill be at 14-17psi with this setup. Not a daily driver. How recommended is it to replace piston rings. I know this setup isnt going to live long.

I would do a compression test first to be sure the motor is in good enough shape to even attempt to go for the 400hp goal. If it checks out,it will be reliable if you have a good tuner who knows the PFC. Really isn't worth re ringing the stock pistons if you already know it's not going to last long,if your going to go that far into the engine,save up and do it right the first time. Just my opinion,and good luck with the build!

Stock rings can handle 400 hp if it's a healthy motor. But you'll be blowing through the trans faster than those rings if you beat on it too hard

Yea true haha I don't mind blowing a couple tranys. Maybe I will later when I have to buy them over and ove again. Ill eventually end up running a z32 trans but I don't want to pay ~$800 for an adapter plate at the moment. thanks for your feed back.

Get the maverick motors sports adapter plate from George. And it's for the z33 6 speed. Much better than the z32 trans. And adapter plate is like $430 iirc. There is more you need but it's worth it in the end

Yea man,gotta pay to play haha. It gets expensive quick. I just finished up my build and I don't even wanna talk about how much I've spent lol. But it's worth it if you plan in keeping the car.

would it be stupid to just change piston rings and not upgrade pistons and rods. I'm already kind of deep into this build. the head is pretty much complete. It has new hydraulic lifters, 264 intake and exhaust cams, BC retainers, springs, and exhaust valves, new valve guides and valve seals. also some tomei rocker arm stoppers. now I need to focus on the bottom end, and a bunch of other minor things.

I do not understand, if your goal is 400 horses, why wouldn't you just install a 2jz-gte engine, bone stock with a large single turbo and fuel it. You would make more than 400, more like 500+. And the engine will last longer. So will the transmission. And parts are easier to find... also you can use the SAFC at that power level with great results.
That said, I see you are already knee deep. Problem is getting that engine built right, major #1 concern is cleanliness, if you are building it yourself in a clean room with serious air filtration (like painting a car) that is fine if you happen to own all the right tools. But are you doing that? Secondly, machine work is perhaps more critical. For instance, deck plate it with the ARP hardware you intend to run at the time, with the exact torque and lubrication. It is difficult to reproduce those results if the person doing the machine work is not the same person assembling the engine. |
