APEXi or nothing. IMO why the fuck would you try to save $100 with cheaper cometic as opposed to an apexi when the part is so important and hard to change. |

I agree and I bought that turbo new in the box too. I think it's because the car sat not running for the year before and after my deployment. Wide open in the engine bay because I had pulled the head before I left. The car was covered and the hood closed but it was outside for a whole winter.

87x1.1 is stock thickness and bore size, but you might want to call whoever youre ordering from and confirm they have the cosworth in stock. Many places do not carry them anymore since the cosworth sr head gasket line was discontinued.

What is everyone using as far as oil restrictors go? I read many different things. Some say they use it and some say they don't. I was told I need this -3 size Oil inlet fitting for GT28/30/35R with built-in restrictor : atpturbo.com. What are you guys using? Just dropped a lot of money on the new gt2871r and last thing I want to do is blow the seals or starve it.
Oh and as far as the actuator bracket goes from my previous post. It worked perfectly. here is the link again for anyone interested. Garrett Adjustable Wastegate Bracket : atpturbo.com Again this bracket is for the gt2871r with the coupler style housing. I tried to get a picture of it installed, but it wont work for some reason. |

OEM HG is 86x1.3 (1.3 gets smashed down to ~1.1-1.0)

The cosworth gaskets can still be found, you just have too look and expect to pay $30 more on avg for them, as my research shows. The recommended restrictor size for ball bearing turbos is .035. If you go smaller,or bigger, base it on oil pressure and type of oil.

I really don't know for sure, but being as he said the crha came apart. That could be a manufacturing issue, but he also said he left it outside to the elements. That's an end user issue. Maybe oiling, or cooling?
Just a fluke maybe, I would still send it back to the manufacturer, and see what they say. What I was saying is that, there is noway I would accept paying $1100+ on a turbo and only expect it to last 7k miles, you shouldn't either.

Apexi, HKS, etc. All come in 86mm bore sizes also.

Apexi lists 86mm bore (as that's what I have on my engine and others) but it's not an exact 86mm bore, it's really for an 86.5. 1.1 is the thickness I always run too.
In regard to a turbo not lasting, it can be a plethora of things. Oil feed, oil type, air filter type, and or whatever else that can ingest itself and spit out the exhaust (spark plug tips) Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Garrett fanboy, but any company can have defects in things and most take care of you in that event. My personal car had 30k on the 2871r and it's still in great shape when I changed over to the GTX2867. I know of countless other 30-50-70k Garrett turbo users as well, on cars that get abused.

That is it right there, we can drop this argument now. 1 year unprotected from the elements will kill most metal things, fragile metal components in a turbo are done for.

and thats what i myself am blaming. i dont doubt garretts quality, its me leaving it outside because of deployment and surgery that i blame. theres no way that any reputable turbine company is going to build a sub 10k mile turbo. hell, the little tiny turbo on my evo pushes out 20lbs all day and theres dudes running them much higher. i seriously doubt that 20-22 lbs was killing that turbo.

Well, I installed my JWT S3 cams last night. Went well. The idle is now more lopey than I was expecting, haha I guess I hadn't thought about it.
But I haven't really smashed into the throttle yet, just checking for low throttle AFR and making sure the tune is still safe and clean. Anything I should do before going out and pounding on it? And the power increase I should be able to feel...right? Like butt dyno? Haha What is the usual horsepower increase from installing S3 cams on an otherwise very clean solid running car?

Im running a JWT ECU, so I wont need a retune. I'll be keeping an eye on my AFR's though to make sure it stays nice and tidy at 11.7ish.
