Help! gauge cluster voltage regulator affecting fuel and temp gauge!
OK guys , First off I have searched! Even Used FSM. Not enough detailed info as far as repairing Cluster. Here is my prob. I Have a 1992 240 coupe with HUD instrument cluster. Everything was working fine untill I went to start today and Fuel gauge reads full Always! Also temp gauge Climbs to Hot the moment I turn Ignition ON.Speedo and Tach works . I have pulled fuel pump out and tested Fuel float potentiometer and its working fine. I have checked gauge sending unit and its within specs. I have researched enough and found some links on HUD repair but not On the two gauges . I also read somewhere that the Fuel and Temp gauges share a Voltage regulator wich steps down voltage and if voltage supplied is high reading will be high. I read that this is common and it affects both gauges when Voltage regulator Goes FUBAR. So My question is Where is this Regulator on the Cluster? Where is the DIY writeup if one exists? Has any one had this problem?

Neverind
After checking votages and wiring found a intermitten open bad ground , I just added another ground directly to cluster , all is well now.Fuel and temp gauges read normal now .Didnt need Voltage regulator after all , I forgot to keep it simple. I hope this helps some one else with same problem.

Bring this one back from the dead. I have the same problem. My SE HUD cluster has an erratic temp gauge. The sensor at the engine and thermostat are confirmed to be working and the cooling system was properly bled. The gauge is almost always at max cool and would randomly peak at H for a minute then snap back to L.
I've read that some other late 80s and early 90s Nissans (including the 240sx) have this issue and the fix is replacing the voltage regulator in the cluster. I see there are three of them on one of the mother boards. Is it one of those? |
