Which engine do I have?

So I recently purchased a 91 s13 coupe. The previous owner told me the engine was from a 99, but I don't think that's true and its painted blue so I can't tell what color its supposed to be. From what i've researched a flat top means it is an s13 engine and ribs on the front mean it is an s14 or s15 engine. Mine has a flat top, but has ribs on the front too. I think I saw somewhere that might mean its from the later generation 180sx's, but I couldn't find much on that. If it is then what engine is it equal to as far as internal hardware and stuff? I could really use some help as I'm starting to do some work on it and I need to know what I'm working with. I also need to know what ECU it uses as I'm planning on putting in a megasquirt and I have to make sure it will work with it. Thank you!

Lol. This is the only picture I have at the moment. I want to give the most detailed pic possible so hopefully one of these attempts work:

And I'll attach a crappy version of the pic...

Ya, but I'm not sure I want to trust the previous owner's words with a thousand+ dollar purchase. Plus I'm pretty sure that s15 engines have the curved valve covers for vct. So after studying some pictures it appears to be an s13 blacktop... could someone else help me confirm this? I really hope it is an s13 blacktop and not some 180sx or s15 thing lol.

S13 sr20, greddy style intake manifold, hks bov, greddy pulleys, some front mount. That's all I can tell.

Edit: your coil pack wiring looks super jank. See if you can find a S13 SR20 coil pack harness. Should be an easy fix.

You have a S13 SR20DET for sure.
The fins on front of the head indicates that the head is at least from later year 180sx.

So this sums up to either you have either Black top SR20DET from 180sx or Red top SR20DET with Black top head.

Awesome. So as long as whatever standalone I get says its for an s13 SR20DET then I should be good right?

Looks like a Blacktop SR20det from a late model 180sx. And fix that mess of a wire job for your coil packs.

For standalone yes, you need a ECU for a s13 SR20DET. If you want to verify, look at your ecu and see what code is labeled on the ecu.

Your best bet is use the ECU you're using as a reference for the aftermarket ECU you're going to use. Look in the passenger kick panel and see what 2 digit numerical code is on the ECU. That's what I would use to differentiate what year S13 SR20 you could have. There are atleast 3 different S13 SR20 ECUs, not including auto vs manual ECUs. Should be either 62/63, E5/E6, or J4.

If that is speaker wire, go find the previous owner and slap him for us...some people shouldn't be allowed to mod cars.

the ribs on the front of the head mean its a 94-98 S13 blacktop.

+1 on the speaker wire.

Some '93's were also finned redtops, as discovered in this thread...

The S14/S15 SR motors look the same. Here is a picture of my S14 SR in my project car. A 99 SR from an a S15 would look about the same.

Looking at the OP's pic, I notice there is a pipe off the back of the head cover, which i'm assuming is for a pcv valve or something. Mine does not have this.

Does anyone know why? I'm running a J4 ECU if that helps.

The hose coming out of the back left of the valve cover (as we see it in the pic) is the PCV

So which SR20's have no pcv valve? Maybe the special edition 242hp ones, lol

what would be the purpose of deleting it then, because the valve cover looks like it has never been drilled to accept one.

The engine runs amazing without.
