Holy crap that looks good.
Props for doing such a good job. Looks like I'm painting my car this winter. Does it have to be above a certain temp to do this? I'm assuming so.

I think it looks really good considering the price, and if you prep it properly, and wetsand after every 3 coats or so and progressivly move to a higher grit, then you should be able to get a very smooth and orange peel free finish. You also have to take into account that weather plays a pretty big role in the formation of orange peel. You also have to remember that black is one of the hardest colors to hide imperfections with, but as i stated before with the proper prep and sanding, you should be able to replicate that picture that was posted on the mopar thread, if not a better result if you are patient and take your time. I'd expect to work on it for at least a few days. I plan on doing this to my roof in black, since ive got a peeling clear coat and some free time during my winter break from college. I'll prove to the doubters that black can be done well, just with a little lovin

I could imagine that this stuff can't possibly cure too hard...
You'd probably want to remove it before putting real paint down

It does not look that great up close. Personally I just think it's so bland. Since you can't use any additives, appliance white and straight black are pretty much the only colors that are turn out ok. But for the price I guess you can't complain too much. |

I should stress that the final result is only as good as the effort you put into it. I will admit some areas I got lazy and rushed, mainly at the fifth and sixth coat when I had to move my car to a friends house. I had no time to wetsand the whole car, but instead the runs. Also if you surface as any dents, or pits they will show if you don't fill them. Where I have serious paint chip from my old paint...it shows with the new one because I didn't take the time to fill it. Also temperature does have a big effect on overall progress.....more like humidity. I was working in 80+ degree weather at times with humidity almost at 80%...not the ideal setting, but being strapped on time I had no choice...so that resulted in some orange peel as well. Finally got my bumper in, so I will take pics of my progress on that piece and use it for a "write-up". kognition - Who neg repped you? Cause I know for damn sure it wasn't me. I don't get angry or upset at any comments flying my way...you can see by my responses in ANY thread I post in.

You wetsand every two coats and yes each coat is thinned out. People do more than six, I can't see anyone doing less.

Just want to let you guys know that I finally got my rear JDM bumper (used) and started to paint it last week. I'm done, but I haven't found the time to install it onto my car. Since I was only painting the rear bumper this time around...I actually took my time and wetsand between each two coats and let each coat sit overnight (almost 24 hours between each coat). Far less orange peel and runs were apparent...even my neighbors thought I sprayed the bumper instead of rolled it. Also I had time to take pics between each coat and some other detailed pictures. I'm going to use these pictures for my writeup when I find the time to write it up...since I'm going back to school and want to refresh the website.
Here is how the bumper looked when I first got it.... You have to roll on the paint very thin...so thin its like your rolling on milk. You get runs and micro bubbles...but that is easily fixed by catching them with the roller. Here is a pic of the runs and bubbles before I used my roller, just to give you an idea of what I was working with.... Here is the final and sixth coat....very clean IMO.... I still need to wetsand and buff the entire car.....BUT...I managed to get the front end out of the way. Its hard to take a pic given its white, but I must say I like the results. Smooth to the touch and quite glossy...and I used 1000 grit, medium rubbing compound and polishing compound. Here is a pic of the hood: http://www.ss14.net/pics/writeup/rollerpj/buff.jpg Here is a pic of the untouched roof: http://www.ss14.net/pics/writeup/rollerpj/nobuff_1.jpg Notice the reflection of the houses on the hood and the hazy reflection on the roof? I should also note that the car is about 50 ft away from those houses. More to come with time on my side....but for now I'm happy with the results , the amount of money I saved, and the experience I gained.

So I finally wetsand with 1000 grit and buff the car with rubbing compound. Orange peel is apparent in most of the areas due to my rushing and skipping some wetsanding. I can see that patience and attention to detail does help...as my rear bumper looks very good compared to the rest of the car.
This pic has some light glare from the car next to me...you can also notice the reflection....

damn good job! I thought about rollin my s14, but I just dont have the time for all the wetsanding. Im currently transforming my garage into a temporary paint booth and ill be resprayin the silver moss except with met.black roof and trunk and hood. SO hopefully ill only have to wetsand it once when im done.
anyway looks hella good for $68.
