Broken Welded Diff..? Or what? Help!
Hey guys my first 240 (s13), and it has a welded diff. Earlier today I heard a VERY loud cracking noise out of the front of the car passenger side, turning at like 5mph out of a parkin lot..literally babying it. I don't beat the car hardly ever. I started to drive back home and noticed something felt odd in the steering. What it does is, if you give it gas the back will start to slide, all power seems to be going to the right side .. I believe i'm correct when I say welds cracked, or possibly broken axle?
Just figure i'd get some insight.. thanks! Also going to pick up a 6 bolt j30 rear end and hopefully put it in there unless it turns out to be just an axle that snapped. From what i've read (yes I've searched like crazy!) the j30 6 bolt should go right in... you guys know any places I can get j30 axles for cheaper than $200 if i do go this route...? Thanks! Also how much of a possibility is it that I snapped a axle based off what i've told you? |

You might want to try a junkyard or Craigslist.

If you heard noise from the front of the car where the diff is NOT located then it might not be the diff. If you broke the diff then you most likely wont be moving anywhere. but it is possible that you broke an axle. have you tried looking under the car for anything broken?

That's what I was thinkin since the sound came from the front it possibly wasn't the diff... I'm going to try and get it jacked up tomorrow, haven't really had time to look up under there real good.

You say it came from the front passenger side. I would start there first, only logical. You don't even need to jack the car up to check just turn your wheel out and see if you notice anything broken.

thanks for the helps guys, I got it figured out. Jacked car up today spun wheels looked up under there, seemed the axle flange bolts (I assume that's what they're called) we're missing. it seemed the last one just broke out which was the sound I heard, were there should be 0 bolts there were none so it was freely spinning. Went and picked up new nuts and bolts got it back running right.
Then realize front passenger side tire was flat -__- if it's not one thing, it's another. Haha thanks though for the help guys! I appreciate it |

Holy Snatch! So let me get this right.. You blew out the front passenger tire (loud pop sound) and the last bolt/nut holding the half shaft to the axles broke off/fell out all during the act of driving 5 mph in a parking lot? Damn, I think its time to comb through the entire car and check for missing/loose bolts, nuts, etc..
Time to familiarize yourself with that car more, esp if you're running a welded diff and think that sounds coming from the front of your car are from the welded diff.. lol.. Oh and yeah a flat tire will definitely make the steering feel a little 'funny' |
