Testing VLSD
Whats the easiest way to test if a differntial pumpkin is a VLSD or open diff?
I searched and all the ways to test it is while its installed on the car (i.e. spinning one wheel). I wanna be sure this is a VLSD and functioning properly before I put it on the car.

you can't really because the force it takes to churn the fluid is a lot higher than anything you can do by hand. or rather, the forces you could produce on the diff out of the car won't tell you if it can handle the higher forces put on it by the car.

if you have the pumpkin out of the car, just spin the 2 sides, if it spins freely and independently, its open, if there is major resistance going the opposite ways then it has lsd...

Couldn't you just jack up the ass end of the car and spin one tire. If the other tire spins in the same direction it's LSD. If it spins in the opposite its an open differential.

When I spin one flange the other rotates in the opposite direction. Isn't this supposed to happen only with open diffs??
Again the diff isn't in the car so I'm not sure if I can test it like that. I'm gonna drain it and take off the cover so is there anything in the pumpkin that will tell me if its a VLSD or not?

I think I just got ripped off by buying what I though was a vlsd. After comparing the two, the "vlsd" housing was smaller and the rear mounting bolts were about 1.5" closer together. Does anyone know what diff this is? The numbers on it are 118a 38611 10F00 B
