gt2871?
I currently have a garrett turbo on my sr20, it looks like a bone stock turbo, but the one day i realized it spun for like a good 15-20 seconds after the car shut off.. I immediately though, shit i might have a ball bearing turbo..
anyway i looked up the code on the tag and can't seem to find any info on it? It reads OHM123474 172560-5015 I can't seem to find any info on it, I also dyno'd the car the other day and it did 285whp at 17psi.. but i also had an unfunctioning waste gate and a leaky intercooler pipe. My motor is stock other than power fc, and 550cc injectors. Any ideas on if this is an s15 ball bearing or a gt2871? |

Tune, setup?
.64 and .86 are options so you would have to look at the exhaust housing. The compressor housing has options as well, so you might want to look at that too. The standard 56trim 2871r came with a 3in inlet, and optional exhaust AR. If you happen to have the gt28r/s15 comp housing that could explain the low numbers. But I've done 300~hp on mustang/and dynapack with an s15 turbo @ 18psi. So you could have the 52trim 2871r. Sent from my Highly Tuned Note 4.5!!!

Or a pretty shitty tune!
My buddy sr20 on the 52 trim 2871r made 366whp at 16psi on E85, and dynapack dyno. Cortesy of Koji Arai. |

well i know that i do indeed have the 52 trim, because the compressor housing looks exactly like an s14 t28 housing. The turbo is also working extra hard due to the waste gate not shutting correctly hence the late spool time, the turbo starts coming alive around 4k rpms. Heres a dyno chart.

There is deff some thing wrong with your set up, or you have a shitty tune.
What mods does the motor have? You sure you have 2871r? |

well like i said the waste gate is open so the turbo is working extra harder than it should be.
SR20DET BLACK TOP BC springs w/ titanium retainers Stock Rebuild GT2871 w/ s15 comp housing STI Injectors 550cc? Greddy Intake Greddy Intercooler Full 3" exhaust Apexi Power FC all on pump gas and on a dynojet. At the time of the dyno my IACV was completely open and my wastegate was rattling and doing weird shit around 3-4k. I'm going to slap on a bigger compressor housing, fix the waste gate and eliminate the IACV and go up for a retune, i guess we'll see what happens.. Rant over, the 2871r in all its trims should be able to do 330 - 350hp on a stock bottom sr, with supporting mods. Sent from my Highly Tuned Note 4.5!!!

Yup, first fix your not working stuff, then get it tuned.
You are not just "making your turbo work harder", if the wastegate is open and it is a T28bb, you are killing it fast. It is getting WAY overspun to get 18psi with an open wastegate. I don't think it is a 2871, these easily boost creep to 25+ psi with the .64 A/R so you'd be north of that pressure wise. Ti retainer and stronger valve springs without cams is totally ridiculous AND bad for the camshafts, so you may want to check that too. I can't see why anyone would fit them without cams, and if cams are not properly set, it could also explain low numbers. So here is what you actually need to do: 1/ assert what REALLY is on the car, camshaft included; 2/ fix the problems, that includes sourcing the right exhaust housing for your turbo if it needs one. Make sure this is not a chinese fleabay turbo too ... if it is, time for a new one. 3/ have it tuned. I'd do that ASAP before blowing something, |
