My S13 SR20 project
Check it out! another S13 SR project on the forum! My original plans was to rebuild a good S13 for my new job this spring. I'll be commuting about 40 miles everyday. I currently have a carbon blue boosted 2000 Toyota Celica GTS. I know, hate on me, but it was my first car and I worked 4 long years to pay the ********** off. I've put a huge amount of time and money in that car, but mainly it has GT2860RS, 450CC injectors, PowerFC, etc... It puts down 240hp to the ground. I've been driving this car as a daily and even with all the care I put to it, it'd falling to pieces and with the expensive parts, it's just a rediculous money pit. Nevertheless, my first car.
Anyway, I just wanted to build a good reliable daily thats a little fun and just let my Celica sit and out of my hair for a good while. I wanted to strip the car all the way down and rebuild and clean it from the ground up. I was looking at about 4,000. But then I went to thinking....hmmm for about 1,000 more I can get a shell instead and an SR and then it just grew from there.... Now I'm working with 5 grand and I'm order parts out the Ying Yang. I found a white "shell" on here for 900 bucks. Its a 93 SE with some body damage, missing carpet, Nismo tranny mount, VLSD, some other goodies, and a running KA. I thought it was a pretty good steal so I nabbed it. I also found a S13 SR motorset for $1600 on craigslist I know, risky. The guy also threw in a brand new intercooler+all the piping and a 255 walbro pump. The only thing it was missing was the clutch, flywheel, transmission bolts, the clutch fork, and Ignitor. Kinda wierd. But I thought it was still a good deal. Oh yeah, it came with the full harness too. Currently, my plan for the car is: 1. The Motor - Clean the SR - replace the water pump - replace most of the gaskets - hoses - possibly a small wire tuck - etc....anything I can think of that could be replaced. i.e. make a good clean working motor 2. the S13 - pull the KA - paint the engine bay - drop all the suspension parts and subframe for clean and repaint (possibly powdercoat) - remove any rust spots - strip down the underbody and recoat with some sort of rhino-liner - do something with the interior, haven't gotten that far yet I'm currently a student at Georgia Tech so I live on campus in Atlanta. My parents live in Marietta and the stuff has been sitting at their house for a few weeks. I've recently been working on it for the passed 3 weekends, so this is going to be a long post. The first weekend I came home after a week or order parts and what not and had all this waiting for me. I found a good deal on a Megan Manifold for $80. I also decided to play it safe and bought some Greddy RAS. That flywheel weighs like 13lbs or something? I don't know, bought it off ebay . The intercooler kit I got from the motorset I bought was kinda cheap, but nothing that can't be fixed. Started with pulling parts off the motor Cleaned and re-painted brackets, hightemp gloss black. Like my organization? I also decided to replace the S13 Oil strainer(Right) with an S14 Strainer (Left). The inside of the motor is clean! Baffle plate cleaned and strainer installed Got a Free stick welder! not sure what Im going to use it for.... I was able to get my hands on some Bride seat fabric and had a little side project on the broken center console lid on the S13. So it went from this. to this! 3 seconds flat. Then I did the glove compartment next. Messed up a little bit. Can you tell? I think I'm going to reupholster the whole interior with this stuff, minus the front seats of course. Took off the turbo and cleaned some of the pipes Took off the manifold and decided to clean the rusted water lines under it. replaced those hoses too. If anyone needs the parts numbers, I've got them. Everything off the motor and being cleaned. It took forever, wish I had a sand blaster or something. Several coats later(1 primer, 2 silver, 2 clear)... This is where I break car parts. My house is also under renovation because of the flood a few weeks back. Everything is away from the walls so people can work... My parents are the only people with flood insurance, what? |

Intake manifold cleaned and reinstalled! replaced the gaskets and got new bolts to add to the bling!
I love black friday deals parts being reinstalled, I bought a pulley set from ebay...15 bucks. decided to take the risk Tried searching for horror stories but could find any, but a few people have used them with no problems. They seem to be the right size... CLEAN! striped, cleaned, and painted the tranny too Packed some parts to take to Miller Powdercoating started on the S13 because I'm still waiting for more parts to come in for the motor/or waiting for parts to come back to me. Then I called it a day... lot of work ahead... QUESTION: I took apart the alternator because I wanted to clean the housing and I was a little curious on how it worked. I can put the effing thing back together. The brushes(circled in red) are keeping me from sliding the shaft back in, i have no idea how to push them back in. Any help or bashing would be appreciated, I may just take it to an alternator place for them to put back together. |

Nice build so far, but i dont see it lasting long because the mods dont like unfinished builds unless your a prem. member, as for the alternator i have never taken a sr one apart... if you gotta have a shop redo it might as well go all out and have them rebuild it while your at it...

Looks good man. You got alot more patience then me. No way in hell I would spend the time cleaning everything you have done so far. Thats what a pressure washer is for . GL man, keep updating as time goes on. I would also like to see how the powder coating finish looks.

Alright, here we go for an update. I've been hammered with school and finals the passed 2 weeks, so I haven't been able to really touch the car.
First off, got my parts back from Miller's Powdercoating. I decided not to coat the T25 since I'm switching to a GT2860RS from my celica. Gaskets installed! Valve cover mocked-up, I'm waiting for come cam cap bolts to install, some looked a little iffy. Got more parts in!--a bunch of small stuff Installed injectors into the fuel rail to finish up the intake side All the turbo parts waiting to get put together! So, I decided to make a heatshield out of one of my mom's old cooking pots, I was almost done cutting the piece out and then my last cutting disk broke... Polished and Done! Tha'ts all for the motor for now I started working on the car today and pulled the motor. I spent the rest of the day pulling shit out of the engine bay and getting ready for a good sand blasting and paint job in the next few days. I'll post pics tomorrow. P.S. Motor and Tranny for sale! AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER SHIT! QUESTION: While pulling out the motor and what not, I missed a plug to label and I'm trying to figure out what it's for. Anyone know? Also, what the heck is this thing? I'm thinking cruise control? |

Time for more updates. Thanks for the support guys, its a good motivation! I pretty much spent the past 2-3 days cleaning the shit out of the engine bay and cut some brackets I'm not going to use anymore. It is definitely something I don't ever want to do again.
I painted it the bay with a "snow white pearl" from House of Kolor. The pictures don't do the paint any justice. I can't wait to drop the engine in. And some suspension I've cleaned and re-painted |

Yeah I thought about it, but after opening up the engine It looked so clean I decided to just let it ride and see what happens... I'm coming dangerously close to my budget of 5 grand. I know I should do it, but the funds are limited.

I cleaned and painted more shat these past few days. I also installed all the bushings in the the front suspension as well.
A of the engine bay as I put stuff back on... I grinded down the rubber lining in the fender wells. This is by far the shittiest thing to do ever. This is something I don't ever want to do again. I definitely did a half-ass job getting rid of all the material and paint. I'm re-thinking the idea of re-lining the entire underbody... Rust bullet liner--I did 3 coats had some downtime, so I decided to paint the brackets on the cruise control. lol Greddy RAS!!! and the new timing chain tensioner. old vs. new I'm almost down re-installing the front suspension and engine components. Next on the list now is: - grinding down the under body and re-coating with herculiner - Cleaning and painting rear suspension - installing all the rear ES bushings - drop and clean the fuel tank I think after all that, I'll be ready to drop the motor in. Maybe even sooner. Then...wiring. I'm still looking for several parts, just waiting for a good deal: SR intake SR/Q45/Z32 MAF, whatever really. Just looking for around 250-300 hp. Been working on putting everything back together while juggling christmas with the fam.
Suspension is Oh so cleeaaaaan Finished putting together the motor. FINALLY organized the rest of my parts I also found a set of Toyota Celica Seats for $75!!! I couldn't pass up on these, I'll make them fit some how... While putting the wheels back on, I found that the bearings on both front wheels are bad so I'm on a search for some new hubs.... Next on the list: - Underbody - Rear sub-frame cleaning - Interior - dropping motor - wiring - and done?? If all goes to schedule, the car should be running some time mid-next week, so probably next weekend. |

Updaaaaate
Found a sweet ass deal on a Mig welder on criagslist. $100 smackers. I sold my Stick welder for $150! scrubbed and cleaned the interior for a nice shiney layer of Peel n' Seal from Lowe's. who needs Dynamat?? I dyed the carpet black and replaced the Jute padding with regular carpet padding. This mexican sold me that roll for 2 bucks, couldn't refuse. I also decided to start on a small wire tuck, this should give you an idea of what I'm looking to do. Soo it looks like my motor is an Auto and my harness is from a 5-speed. The TPS on the motor is a 6 prong with these wires. The Plug on the harness is a 3 prong (brown) with these wires. I'm planning on splicing white to white , black to black, red and green wires to red/light green wire on the manual harness and disregard the rest on the 6 prong. can someone confirm this? Just want to make sure... Also, the oil drain tube from the turbo was ripped when I got the motor and I am really really really trying to avoid paying 20 bucks for another one. Can I use some sort of high temp oil resistant rubber hose substitute? Silicone maybe? I'm also thinking about my plumbing for an oil catch can since I don't have room for it with that megan manifold. I was thinking the right side of the T goes to the block and then Left side of the T goes to a new catch can then from the catch can to the intake. Does that sound about right? I've seen like a million different configurations. |

God I hope this thing starts
This one is a long one...
I painted some interior pieces this "black diamond" paint from House of Kolor, I think its a good subtle touch. you can see the amount of metal flake thats in the paint. Took everything off the rear of the car and put it on the dolley. started grinding the underbody down... And recoated the whole thing, worst idea ever. I will never freaking do this bullshit again. I also painted and pressed in new ES bushings---also on my list on shit I will never do again. all installed with Isis subframe collars. ***This is my first time doing wiring, if anyone sees anything thats wrong. please, please,please let me know!!! I started a little wire tuck today, pretty much putting everything under the runners or the whole intake manifold. I ran the coolant temp and TPS into one loom and ran it under the manifold. My snazzy crank angle sensor Just to give you an idea on what I'm looking to do... I also cut the loop out... done! wired in the Q45 ignitor Here's the finished product. I added the expandable sleeving where ever I could. and cut any and all unused plugs. my tuck job. Here are all the plugs I had cut off, anyone see any that i SHOULDN'T have taken off??? With the TPS, I ended up wiring it the way I had said in my previous post. I matched color for color and Spliced the Green and Red wires into the Red w/ green stripe wire...I hope this works. Tomorrow I will install the fuel pump and drop that motha effing motor in! Can anyone tell me the belt sizes for the SR? I also still need input on the Turbo oil drain tube!!! I need a downpipe!!! |

hmmm, I spend about 8-10 hours a day for the passed 3-4 weeks. My budget is 5 grand, but I stopped keeping track about a week or so ago. At that time I was a little over 4,500 and that was before I started selling my old parts.

Installed the clutch and flywheel.
This T/O bearing is like twice the size of the one that came off. Wish I had a comparison pic. installed Transmission installed with these hefty grade 10.9 bolts I found locally for a dollar a bolt. I also test fitted the oil filter adapter and Oil pressure sender. What do you guys think? I feel like the clearance is a little too close... I WISH WISH WISH I had a fucking chain and engine hoist connector. If I did, I wouldn't have had to resort to using to flipping hoists! Finally in... I suppose its all smooth sailing from here. The passed few days have taken forever because my woman has developed stupid b!tch syndrome. Hopefully, I can hammer the rest of this car out the rest of this week. QUESTION: My motor set didn't come with a lower harness so I'm going to use the KA lower harness. Like everything else, I want to cut the unnecessary and clean the harness. I also swapped over all the sensors from the KA tranny to SR. Im a little confused with some of the Connectors... specifically 3 and 4, here is what I think the plugs are... #1 - reverse sensor #2 - 5th gear sensor #3 - neutral position sensor #4 - 4th gear sensor Is this right??? I don't think it is, The S13 diagram in the FSM isn't very clear. |
