I just finished the VLSD swap from a 96 Infiniti J30 into my 96 S14 Friday night..... IT FUKING ROCKS ASS!!!! I would definitely suggest this swap to anyone who is VLSD-less. It is an absolute must for any sports cars. The swap couldn't have been easier than installing my CAI Just dropped the old one out put new synthetic Mobil 1 fluid in the VLSD and jacked it up and bolted it in ..... O ya and to test it out LMAO i went and did donuts in the parking lot at Applebee's (which is where i work). The gears in the J30 r a little taller too so i got more power in the 1-3 gears although my top speed has been cut drastically. Before my car would do about 140-145 and i couldn't get it over 130 this weekend. I got the VLSD for $300 at a junkyard and it was completely worth every penny and i can't wait to run it at the track....

Nice! I got a 97 240 and a 97 J30 LSD. . Sort of like your 96 and 96 =)
You said you used Mobil 1? What weight did u get for this oil? I need some specs on it. . because I FINALLY got the goddamned bushing I needed to install it in the first place, and I'm no longer lazy! At least for now... So I need to get this thing done ASAP, because this winter I don't plan on getting stuck in a parking lot. =) When you installed it, did you remove the wheels? Did you do it yourself? AND. . where the hell does that little hose go that's on the unit itself? Maybe it's obvious, but i haven't been under there in awhile. . . Any help would be awesome. . thanks. . -Rob

The J30 gears will actually reduce acceleration and increase theoretical top speed. They're 3.94:1 versus the 240SX's 4.08:1.
Of course you might've lost the top end because of the power loss... how do you know how fast you were going, anyway? |

Then i called Nissan and they told me 90 and 140 would work but it would be a little thick in the winter. So I went back and got 90. No don't take the wheels off it will actually make it easier with the wheels on cause u have to rotate the axles in order to get to some of the bolts so just reach over and turn the wheel. Yes i did it myself and it was very simple and finally i don't know what the hose at the top does i think it's a breather tube or something like that but u will c it when u drop ur old one out. Just take the one off ur VLSD and use the one that's already in the car cause it's a pain in the ass to get to. GOOD LUCK

Well going to a taller gear would make the speedo reading off by a small percentage, so what reads as 100mph is probably around 110. That could be why your top speed was "lower" as indicated but almost as fast in actual speed. Because of the slightly taller gearing unless it puts you in a better spot in the power curve your top speed may actually be lower since it's harder to turn the wheels at the same speed and over come the aerodynamic drag at the same time.

i see that ebay always has the Kaaz 2way and 1.5, but both of those are way outta my price range-$400-$500. the junkyards around here are pretty hopeless. do i just go there looking for a j30 or s13/s14 and just start ripping stuff out?
if i did find one would i need to buy anything else? |

Hmmm. I will have to change that on mine. Thanks though. that will help me if I can ever find a Nissan with an LSD in a yard. There aren't too many near here.

If it has clutch packs, it's not a VLSD. But J30s used the VLSD. All J30s have the 3.92:1 ratio, also, according to Nissan.
The M30 diff is an R200V, but it WILL NOT FIT. The internals are the same as later R200V's, but the housing has a different bolt pattern and the axles fit differently. Instead of having output shafts with bolt-on flanges, the axles plug right into the diff. This is because the M30 has the old semi-trailing-arm rear suspension instead of the multi-link rear suspension like the 240SX, J30, and Z32 300ZX. The M30 diff will fit an S12 200SX or a Z31 300ZX, though. The information in that list is from the old 240sx.org installs page. There's a better VLSD install page out there somewhere that really details it properly. These US-spec VLSDs are the most common: 240SX - 4.08 ratio, ABS sensor, 6 bolt J30 - 3.92 ratio, ABS sensor, 5 or 6 bolt 300ZX NA - 4.08 ratio, no ABS sensor, 5 bolt JDM diffs vary widely... |

if the J30 has a different gear ratio then it would have changed the readout of my speedometer...but it didn't....at 70mph in 5th gear i was a hair over 3000rpms...with the J30 diff I should have been at a higher speed at the same rpms...but it didn't change......there is a possibilty that the J30"T" has the same gear ratio as the 240SX....

Yes, my speedo only registers 120 also but when the needle i pointing straight down then im just about guestimating it's at about 140-145. And b4 i did the swap it was no problem getting my car there. But the other weekend i kept it floored for about 3-4 minutes and it was not budging over (estimating) 130mph. So i would assume that the lower gears would be to blame for that. Also im with u civickilla i figured i would run higher rpms at certain speeds but it runs about the same so that's good i guess.

if the gear ratio is lower(lower number that 4.08) then it will increase top speed but sacrafice acceleration...if the number is higher than it will increase acceleration but lower top speed.....

Actually, it did change the readout of your speedometer. Think about it. It's still going to indicate 70mph at 3000rpm in 5th, when you're actually going about 73mph due to the different ratio. When you change tire sizes or final drive gears, the ratio between indicated speed and rpm isn't going to change, but the actual speed will change. |

Can't Nissan get just about any speedo pinion to fix this problem? I'm not too concerned about it, just glad to have a VLSD again. . hehe. . But, I wonder what size I'd want for that?

Maybe. hen it changes, it changes graphically. At 10 mph, your really going like 11, but at 100, your going 110. I am just clearing this up for anyone that doesn't know. I have an Apex'i speed/rev meter, and it will correct for tire size, you could just add the gear ratio difference to the decimal of the tire size. like 235/205 = 1.15, 4.08-3.92 =1.6, 1.15+.1=1.31. It's just too bad that the unit won't correct for more than 1.20.
I just thought of something. Bigger wheels raise your top speed. Different diff can lower it. it would be 1.15-.16. Haha,It will correct for up to a .80, and thats .99. So if you guys want to really know how fast your re going, go out and buy 235/x/x's and it will be 1 MPH off at 100! haha. *Or be like me and buy a car that has the APEX'i toy in a box in the trunk, so you can install it yourself for free! Man I got such a deal. That georgous car below cost me 1500 with all the mods, and the rims, and a system. (Alpine head, blaupunct & kenwood components, MTX amp + SUB) And it also camewith a pioneer sub i got from the guy for 10 bucks, and I sold it to my bro for 100. hehe. Joey

hell I have no idea, all i know is that my car feels more torqey and more powerfull in the 1-3 gears and the speedo won't go as high as it used to. LOL maybe the speedo is off and that's a great thing cause i need to think im goin faster than i really am, hell i already drive to fast as it is.
