s13 Oil Pump Timing-ka24e

Wassup fellow enthusiasts. I recently picked up another s13 with a sohc with a timing issue. After trying to time it right over and over, I came to find that the oil pump isnt put in and aligned properly with the distributor. Ive been told and read that the oil pan has to be dropped in order to loosen and turn the oil pump to align right with the dist, but im wondering, can I loosen it just enough to pull out and turn (to proper alignment) then put back in?

oil pump is 4 bolts, can be dropped without dropping pan.
you can make timing the motor a 10 min job

drop oil pump and pull the gear shaft out.
if you take the grinder and cut the half moon off the tip above the small gear that drives the distributor.
while oil pump is out pull distributor cap off then the distributor itself. set motor to TDC then adjust to 15deg BTDC
put oil pump spindle and pump back in then set dizzy to cyl 1, it should slide right on with minimal effort. button everything down and fire her up

its not needed, directly below the half moon is a gear. so the half moon is double redundant
