Hello everyone

I have been chatting with the guy who owns the company that did a VG swap in an S13. The swap is not all that it seems. He told me that the stock V6 mounts will work with the stock locations, and the only custom parts needed would be a driveshaft and a HOOD. The whole deal about the handling is not true. He told me that the engine sat further back in the engine bay, and the transmission is heavier than the stock unit, and it made the car handle better than the KA. I have all of the emails if you would like me to post them. VG's are now becoming a slow commodity on JDM importer sites, and they are in the $2000 price range (cheaper than the SR's, especially the S15's) and this engine is capable of MUCH more horsepower STOCK than the SR. This seems to be the ideal swap. The only catch is that there is a custom hood required, and he will not start making the hoods again unless there is an intrest in them. His company does alot of fiberglass work and such, and he build body kits. He told me that he is currently making a body kit that if it doesn't fit, he'll swap it or return your money. (all in my emails) But for the matter, does anyone have any intrest in a VG30DETT swap?

Thanks
Caleb

A while ago this was posted by caleb I would like you to put me in touch with the company you were talkin to if anybody else has any addition info in the swap I would like to hear it I have just bought a vg30dett and a 91 s13 so I am on my way just lemme know any additional information I would need to know. Thanks and I appreciate your all
Chris

I wouldn't mind the extra information either. I don't remember this post, though.

are we talking the vg twin turbo motor?.. there is room for the turbo's?.. because that is important difference between 222 and 300ish hp stock ... also, how much more does the engine and tranny weigh?. and how much is the install.. engine = 2000... (indiana importers sr black tops are 2500) But a new hood... that would make them right around the same.. and install must be more expensive due to the driveshaft etc.. umm,, if all these questions are asnwered in his emails.. forward them 2 me @ [email protected] thanks!

i think for the kit
engine mounts
hood
wiring harness
and other stuff like 4070$ then add an engine.... at that price might as well stick it on your KA

They stuck a VG30E, non turbo. I had a beautiful post ready on this subject, guess I didn't click submit before going to class. . .

Here's what I recall from the emails:

The engine will fit on stock motor mounts (kinda sorta), but it would be best to get some new ones made. It is too tall for the hood.
You will need a shorter driveshaft.
This is a VG30DETT they are talking about. It fits fine in the bay, even shorter than the KA24DE.
Wieght: The VG30DETT is heavier than the KA, though it sits farther back in the bay, moving wieght towards the back of the car and not significantly disrupting the front/rear weight ratio.

I too am interested in this engine, but that's about all the information I have been able to put together so far.

I remember a shop that did a vg swap when I was still in Japan and they didn't have to make a custom hood for It. It was a silvia but It shouldn't make a lot of difference with the 180sx hood. How much more clearance do you need? If its only a few inches you don't need a custom hood.

I am unfamiliar with a VG motor. Is the VG motor the V6 from the Maximas? I thought about the Maxima V6 when I bought my S-14 about a year ago, but was told by a Nissan gearhead here in Arizona that it wasnt worth all the time and money, and that I could get more HP out of my KA. I would be interested to hear more about a V6 swap.

The VG30DETT & VG30DE are both from the 90-96 300ZX Turbo and non-turbo, respectively of course. I believe the Maxima had the NA engine and one point but I think it was tuned down in some way.

The reason I ask is, I know where there is a Maxima RWD V6 that I was told I could basically have because it was punched in the rear, if I wanted it. Everything from the driver and passenger window back is junk but the motor and tranny (auto) is in good shape. But is it even worth it to make a swap like that into a S-14?

I can't believe this swap would work!! Evidently it does, but it still blows my mind. I've been helping my friend work on his 91 300zx tt lately, and there is just so much to that engine. he runs 12's by the way, so imagine how that would pull a 240 if it could hook up...
Please E-mail me with any info on this swap. Thanks a million

Shouldn't a VG30DETT be shorter than a KA24DETT? I'm not familiar with the engine but it sounds like it could just be the intake manifold. If you were gonna go my route and supercharge your engine you wouldn't even need a tuned intake manifold, so you might not even need a custom hood. What do you guys think? This is my first time posting. By the way, can anyone tell me the weight differences between an SR20DET and RB20DET??

okay, so the VG30DETT Will fit on the STOCK (I.E. KA24 type Engine) Engine Mounts, I have thought seriously of doing this swap, it would make a normal 240SX into a
Tire burning Street Monster, ive seen people with 600HP
VG30dett's in 300ZX's, and the 240SX is Much lighter, could you immagine that thing, you prolly couldnt get any traction unless you Idled away from the line, hehe

Actually the predecessor to the Maxima was the 810 built in 1977, and that was RWD. Nissan continued to make the 810 / Maxima RWD until 1994 when they went to FWD. 1995 and newer are FWD.

I have the company emails and the guy that did this. I have asked him questions for months straight now.

I talked to him, and he said we can custom design our own hood, and if we get 10 orders, he will make them for us. His hood will clear the VG30DETT in the engine bay. The thing is, we must all agree on a design. if anyone wants to contact me, my email is [email protected]

I asked the guys at unstablehybrids and they quoted me a price of 7000 to 9000 to do the install. How easy are the engines to get and what is the price, because it would make more sense to get that engine because of the aftermarket support here.

the 810 indeed was rear wheel drive it had a L28 (inline 6)underhood as did the very first Maxima's which were actually just renamed 810's.
When Nissan switched to the VG30 in the car they made it front wheel drive. there have never been any V6 i.e. vg30 Maxima's with rear wheel drive.

Correct on the maxima info. The original 80-83 cars were rwd l28, but from '84 on, (second gen,) they have been fwd.

The only reason that I know this is that I was inspired to do research in hopes of making a vg30et maxima in a '86-87 car, until I found out it was fwd. (Inspired by my crazy-ass friend who is putting a single turbo 2jzgte from a newer Supra into his '86 Toyota Cressida for a daily driver.....:eek)
