Someone just asked me for a page on the Silvia history, and it reminded me of this page.

ok that page is not bad but some of his facts are off.
The 180sx namesake did not appear till 89 with the S13 hatch. previous to that the Hatchs were known as Gazelle's. Also he got his years and engines off. All his year figures are off by 1 year. that is possibly because Nissan officially started manufacturing for sale in the years he listed. Yet for instance anything manufactured in the first model year he listed was actually being produced for the following year. Nissan did not officially sell the S13 till 89 though he has 88 listed in his history.

Gazelles and Silvias both were available as both coupes and hatches for the S110 and S12 generations... I can find pictures of a Gazelle coupe or a Silvia hatch. Gazelle was just a slightly differently trimmed model.
The last Gazelles were sold around '86, I think.. halfway through the S12 generation for model year '87 the S12 become the "New Silvia" like the one in the photo and switched from FJ20ET to CA18DET power (or VG30E in the US 200SX). In the S13, the CA18DET was a carryover, except for a revised intake manifold and added intercooler. In Europe they actually did use the 180SX name for some S110s... the badges say "Silvia 180SX". |

JDM '87-'88 S12s had the CA18DET without an intercooler good for 170ps. Hell, there's a PICTURE of it on that site. Look closely at the S12 "New Silvia". The picture shows a CA18DET valve cover! A CA18ET looks nothing like that. |

USDM S12's had the CA18ET as an option from model years 84-86. For 87-88 the Turbo was dropped in favor of the VG30E. The base line engine for all USDM S12's (84-88) was the CA20E.
