S13 Digital Speedometer Doesn't Work but Odometer Does

Hey guys

My mostly stock 93 S13 has a digital dash with HUD. This afternoon I tried to turn cruise control on, and the green cruise link, just started blinking at me, nothing worked.

A few hours later, my speedometer wasn't working, neither was the HUD. I did notice that the odometer is still rolling over though. Then tonight when I was coming home, the speedo and HUD came on for a few seconds, but they were very dim.

Gauge cluster toast? I wouldn't think this would be a speed sensor issue? Any insight is appreciated.

Dirk

There is a component inside of the digital speedo that goes out its a resistor or something. It will cause the speedo and hud to shut off or not turn on together. Sorry i cant give anymore info but i read about it on a write-up on nico. I'd search for it but im at work and they blocked nico lol.

I found that write-up, but I recall someone writing that their odometer didn't work either, whereas mine does.

the odometer shouldn't be affected at all. It's just the projection components. It's kind of a pain to fix and even then it's not always the same problem. Have you tried heating the capacitor to see if it was the problem?

Yeah, I saw the heating test after I posted last night. I'll have to try that tomorrow afternoon, no time today.

In the meantime, I ordered three capacitors from digikey, as well as a relay I need for my rx7 wiper switch

Another quick question... Is an analog cluster plug and play?

you need the harness for the analog cluster as well, they use different harnesses, but they are interchangeable. The digital one has different plugs on the cluster end, the chassis side is the same between them.

Update. I tried to replace the resistor. It seemed to go ok but now I have nothing on the speedo, odometer, or hud. Plus the gauge cluster doesn't light up now. The tach, fuel, and temp gauges work fine, there's just no backlighting at night. Any ideas? Thanks

recheck all your solder joints.
I found it much easier to swap into analog gauages. 2 sub harnesses and the cluster is all that is needed.

Did you reconnect the plug for the dimming control?

Replaced the Dimming switch no change, tested it and it works with the lights.

Also replaced the TCU no change.
