Ticking VQ35HR !Please Help!
So recently I bought a 2007 350z Base and it had a light ticking which i suspected to be the lifters, and then I changed the oil with Mobil 1 Syn 5w-30 and a mobil 1 filter and i think it got a little worse. its only at idle then after 2500 rpm you cant hear it anymore. the ticking gets quicker as you rev it. What should i do because it bothers me what it is and what it can do to my engine. What do you guys think it is and what could i do to quiet the ticking?

Change to a slightly heavier weight (5w-40).

You could always try it out. Start with replacing 1/2 quart.

My Z33 did that when i first bought it, I switched to Mobil 1, 0W-40 European formula with a Mobile 1 Filter, problem solved. sometimes the Castrol 0W-30 Euro is on sale so i get that with a mobil 1 filter. they are proven to be the best oils for the VQ35. its a fact from a 3rd party oil lab. if that does not quiet it down. take it in for warranty.

dont know if you have solved this, i have a vq in my s14 with the EXACT SAME SOUND it speeds up with revs, ive checked compression and its fine, this weekend im doing a mobil 1 oil change and adding a quart of lucas to see what happens, i at first thought it was the exhaust manifold, but it checked out, my ticking is coming from the back of the head on bank 2 (us drivers side) and thats where it seemed to be on yours in your video, this sound drives me effin nuts!!! let us know if you solved it or not BTW i own an 04 z33 and it doesnt make this noise so its not common, i work at a nissan dealer in the parts dept and am constantly in the shop talkin, we dont ever see them comin in like this, and the vq has solid lifters not hydraulic so its not like its not pumping up, someone up here has suggested the possibility of a cracked valve spring from bouncin it off its limiter

You guys should try Motul 5w 30. Their 8100 full synthetic. 5 qt jug is around $45.
Whenever I have ran Mobil 1 or Purple I lose a qt per 500 miles in my 03 VQ. I can bounce off the rev limiter all day with Motul and never lose a drop. |

vq's are solid lifters and dont have to be respecd or shimmed because of the coating nissan uses on them and the cams and cylinder bores...already thought about it but then another tech at work promptly told me no...anyone that may have any other options would be great

That's not really shimming is it? That's replacing the whole thing. Nissan designates sizes from 7.88-8.40. It's not like on the ka where you can just do the shims. But it's a good place to start I suppose. Cheap but honestly too much of a pain in the ass totake off the front cover and all that shit just to replace one lifter and it possibly not be it...My only concern is I drive an 04 everyday and I've got an 06 vq in my s14 and it doesn't feel like it's making the power it should be and I'm about to supercharge it. Literally all the parts are there and I don't want to destroy the motor if adding all that air would somehow amplify my current problem. I wonder what the op ended up doing to rectify his problem.
