91 240sx ka24de

there is a noise coming from my transmission. it sounds like a rattling/grinding/whirring noise.

most of the time i cant hear it at all. when i press my clutch in it makes no sound, but as soon as i start putting it into gear the sound starts and continues until i release the clutch.

when i first start the car in the morning, it doesnt do it every time i put it in gear, but if i drive it for a long time, it starts doing it every time i press my clutch in for more than a few seconds...

anyone have any idea what this could be?

grinding most likely is bad synchros

whiring noise could be throw out bearing or you may need fluid grab your self some synchromesh from a parts store and start there

i added fluid... it was maybe half a quart low... i thought it went away but within a few minutes of driving it was back again.

its not a grinding gears type of noise. much more smooth like taking an angle grinder to a peice of metal... but not nearly as violent or as loud.

i thought it could be the TO bearing.... but im not sure why putting it in gear seems to trigger the noise.

Pilot bushing possibly.

It's your throw-out bearing or pilot bearing. I wouldn't worry about it as it won't size before you need your next clutch job done. Mine whirled for like 20,000 miles until I replaced them when I did my last clutch job.

I have the same problem right now (just did 5 speed swap). Me and my buddies narrowed it down to Pilot bushing. My uncle and I are dropping the tranny tomorrow at his transmission shop to take a look to make sure that's what it is. Will be able to tell you more after tomorrow if ya want.

Im about 90% sure that it's going to be your pilot bushing. Mine did the exact same thing your describing. You can get a tob and pilot bushing from NissanCC from Russell for less than 30$.

Well mine was a combo of pilot bushing being a bit too big and the clutch rubbing on the pressure plate. Sooooo I would say yes get it fixed asap.

im not driving the car right now. how hard was it to swap the pilut bushing? and what would cause the rubbing of the clutch and pressure plate? i have a white bunny setup.

Okay thats good, but I would swap it before you start driving it again. Pilot bushing is a bitch to swap unless you have a puller tool (sorry for lack of a name for the tool, ill ask my uncle tomorrow.) and I think my pressure plate was on too tight which is why it did that. I'm not sure how the White bunny setup would affect all this though.

i swapped the pilot bushing and it is fixed! i used bread to remove it LOL. thanks guys
