diff cover bolts torque

does anyone really torque their diff cover bolts to 72-87 tf-lbs like it says in the chiltons manual?

i was tightening my bolts today and had it set to 72 and it broke one of the bolts in half before it was there. is this cuz the bolts are old or cuz that is too tight?

Old bolts are easy to brake.

just because the bolts are old doesn't mean they are bad.
however if they are stretch bolts, that is a completely different story.
and really, if it doesnt leak and its tight. who cares?

W T F ?

The diff cover stud to subframe bolts are about 80 ft lbs. The cover to diff housing bolts are about 40 ft lbs. I think you have them confused...Big difference. No wonder you're snappin bolts.

Not sure why these other people seem to think it's okay.

Do yourself a favor and get a FSM
