ignition key cylinder? maybe?
I did a s14 swap not too long ago, and just yesterday my car won't start. If i turn my ignition to the start position nothing happens except i have power, but when i go back into the "0" position, the car stays in key on position. I'll have power to windows and the instrument cluster stays lit, but my radio stays off and steering does lock. the only way i can can get the power to come off is if i disconnect the battery and hook it back up. but when i go to do it again, same thing happens. it's almost like i have a cross short to power. Also, i do have factory alarm system. Before i did the SR swap, I had an issue with my alarm going off when car was locked intermittently....but that doesn't explain why my car stays on when key is off and out. please help me out with that, cause i took it to a muffler shop to do my exhaust, but when trying to pull out...this happened and is stuck over there. I don't want to get a tow truck if it's something stupid that i can do myself. thanks.

I believe i found the problem, after finding a wiring diagram. It seems my ECU is the cause of the problem. The muffler dudes jumped started my battery. I believe that they had it on high current thus blowing my ECU. If i have little work tomorrow, I'm pulling my car in to switch ECU's. I have the mine's K-rom in now, but I have a spare ECU luckily. My FSM is incomplete, so that's why I had trouble finding one.

yeah, i'm agitated, but i don't get pissed until i find out what my problem is. Getting pissed won't help me fix this, plus i like troubleshooting....i just don't like the repair part. Well, my diag is wrong. I switched ECU's, and still same problem. I took out my main engine fuse, and the car goes from on to off position when prompted.....but my engine fuse was stuck in fuse box and broke it trying to take it out. the prongs are still stuck...ain't that but a bitch. I ohmed out the socket and read over 3K ohms - "Out For Lunch", So now i'm going to have to chase the wires to find a short.

Alright, I finally figured it out.....it's retarded. I swapped my ECU and still same thing, so ECU was good. I was about to order myself a brand new engine harness, but i didn't want to fork out the billz....and good thing too. Like i said before, it wouldn't start after i took it to the muffler shop.
I took it to work 2 weeks ago trying to figure this problem, and raised it on the lift and glanced at my exhaust only cause i had a dream about it and didn't know why....no shit. I started thinking about the ECU electrical operation. I took out the main engine fuse and everything was operating correctly as in it'll turn on and off, but no start (obviously). It made me think that the engine wasn't grounded, so i hooked jumper cables from the throttle body bolt to the chassis. The car started like a champ. So i raised the car up, and noticed that my ground strap is missing from the exhaust to the body. The damn muffler dude hacked that shit off. WTF! I was about to throw more money for nothing. I never thought about the engine ground for the longest, cause the car was running before i took it there. So for those who have starting issues like that, remember that the exhaust ground strap is the only ground for the engine to the chassis and is needtd to complete engine electrical circuit(at least mine is). |

the stock ground strap for the battery should connect to both the engine and the frame. |

not mine. I got one ground cable for the ground on battery and it goes straight to chassis only. But yeah, I did put a ground cable from my surge tank to chassis ground same conection as chassis ground for battery.
