s13 SR20DET S13 will not go into reverse

Hi my car recently stopped going into reverse...

I was cruising at about 130 km/h, I felt this really big vibration coming from under my seat, thought something was wrong so i slowed down and it stopped vibrating, but the next thing i know my car would not shift into reverse at all..

1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th and 5th work fine, reverse wont even try to go into gear.

there is now a slight whining noise when the car is in neutral and goes away when clutch is pressed or when in gear..

Any ideas?

Cheers

Losing fluid probably means front or rear tranny seal needs to be changed. Both are simple. Hopefully your reverse issue is not internal. How did you verify your fluid was low without getting underneath?

There was this weird smell I knew was not right, and heat that was too warm for my liking, topped up about 2L from the top of gbox, the smell and heat is gone now, the only thing is I was driving with the smell and heat for a while so I am worried a little haha

** just went for another drive, the sound is still around, definitely a leak from the gbox somewhere, dont have my tools here to have a proper look at it, could this be the reason reverse isn't working? or does it sound like internals have gone boof?**

forgot to mention there is this mechanical clunking sound coming from the transmission when accelerating and switching gears etc.. loose or broken mounts?.. possible misaligned gear?

Cheers

How does your gear shift feel when you try to put it in reverse? Stiff and doesn't go in at all? Or no resistance when even moving it? I'm assuming it doesn't move in gear at all. The 5th and reverse gear are engaged using the same shift fork shaft so if you can still shift into 5th its probably not a broken shift fork.

It definitely sounds like something with your reverse gear or something near it has broken off. That vibration is probably your gears grinding on that broken piece.

I'm thinking the transmission probably had low fluid for awhile and one of the parts finally overheated and broke off causing the issue. The manual trans is a pretty simple machine, just a bunch of spinning gears on a shaft that's submerged in a box full of fluid to reduce wear and heat.

One thing you can do is lift up the car from the rear and while on neutral, spin the driveshaft and see if you can hear any noises coming from the transmission housing. If you hear a constant clicking or sounds of a piece of metal dropping with every turn, it might be a bad shaft bearing.
