'95 KA into '96 Chassis

I'm sure this has been covered before, what will I need to make this happen?

I have an opportunity to get a '95 KA at a decent price just don't want to do it if it's not worth it.

My concern is OBDI engine to OBDII chassis.

Any help is appreciated!

Does this car already have an engine in it? If so, just swap the manifolds and you'll be fine.

No engine, removed a blown SR and now have a KA long block from a 95 with the engine harness. I am also sourcing a KA tranny, I might have a shot at one from an S13 locally. I'd be swapping bellhousings from the KA trans to the SR tranny I already have.
I also have someone I can get a '95 manual KA ECU from for cheap.

Will all this shit work together?


What else would I need?

Nope.

Get yourself a 96+ intake manifold, 96 ECU, and 96+ engine harness.

S13 Transmission will also throw a code because it'll be missing the crank position sensor.

Shouldn't be that much of an issue. Intake manifold and ECU is cheap. The harness should be around $100. As for the crank position sensor, google s13 crank sensor mod.

Wait, dude. If you have a 1995 engine with a 1995 ECU and a 1995 harness you should be all good to go. The engine doesn't care what car it's attached to as long as all the electronic shit (fuel injectors, sensors, etc.) is hooked up to the correctly calibrated computer (same year ECU).

I haven't played around with an OBDII s-chassis myself but I see absolutely nothing stopping an OBDI engine from working in an OBDII car, provided it has the supporting electronics.

If you don't have an ECU, buy one of those instead of swapping the rest of the stuff.

It's the OBDII that screws it all up, I'll never pass smog with a 95 ECU and harness.

From what I've been able to find I'll need a 96 ECU and harness and intake manifold- for the correct sensors.

If you have a OBDI ecu, harness, and matching sensors, it will run like an OBDI car. As long as you still have a cat, I would assume OBDI cars still run clean enough to pass smog. Are your emissions regs stricter out there for OBDII cars than OBDI?

I see. I'd say that if there's a stricter test for '96 cars, then they're going to test it as such and maybe you have some cause for concern.

Otherwise I'd say it runs as good as a 1995 car with all the shit you have. There's not much difference between OBDI AND OBDII cars though. What's especially important for getting it to run clean is having a good functioning cat, and that you have the timing and idle set properly.

Take your time with the swap, ensure all the wiring and everything is plugged in along the way and that everything makes sense. If it doesn't, consult the FSM and you'll likely find your answer. The FSM has some great procedures for setting up the factory tune.

UPDATE-

Picked up a 97 KA24DE with 5spd trans on a good deal last weekend. Came with engine and tranny harnesses as well as the ECU.

I have a 96 S14 OBDII original AT tranny but was SR swapped. Most of the wiring plugged right in but a few were different. Can someone link me to a good article on this? I've been searching but nothing it too specific on the differences of the plugs and what not. I noticed the plugs to the fuse box are different as well as the wiper motor so far.

Also- I have the 95 harness, can I swap over the connectors from the 95 harness to the 97 for the fuse box and other plugs that don't fit?? I don't want to ruin a good harness experimenting.

Any help is appreciated. I posted this in small questions but no response yet
