I need help someone.i own a 91 240sx,with 160,000 miles.
when the cars starts in runs fine, no smoke , no noise no nothing.after about 20 min of driving , when i hit high rpm's and very ocasionally some lower speeds, a very nasty smelling white smoke will billow from behind the car.it will start to idle very very badly, like 300 - 400 rpms.my guess is it, bad head gaskets.....would this be a proper assumption? and if so will the head themselves need replacing as well. any knowledge on this would be great thank you very much ....glen from ohio |

i had that exact problem with my former car, thats why i got rid of it. U can tell if its ur head gasket by checking ur oil. If its really high and mad thin, then its ur head gasket. U would have to change it if thats really the prob, that could cost around 400-500 bucks, so i hope thats not ur prob.

Actually if it is blowing white smoke it is most likely coolant, smoke from burning oil has a blue tint to it and a burnt smell. Does your exhaust smell sweet? If it does it is definatly coolant and you most likely need a new head gasket. Get is check before it gets bad, if cooland is getting into your oil and you are driving it around still thats not a very good idea....
