anyone heard that they are going to make a remake of NGE (original 26ep.) this year!?
i dont think its a good idea, how would the put the story of 26 episodes (especial NGE) into a movie?? also what about the rumor that they are maybe making a REAL movie of NGE? i dont like both ideas |

An Eva movie... been hearing those rumors for years. Be interesting though but I don't know if it'll be any good.
I'm just patiently waiting for Cameron's Battle Angel Alita to become a reality. |

probally not good, for movie-fans to much anime-stuff and for anime-fans too less anime-stuff so probally a flopp, IF it comes
i also heard rumors about battle angel alita, is there any release date known? |

No date give as of yet. Cameron has a couple of projects on his hands at the moment and he chose to do 'Avatar' first. But Alita has been a pet project of his for some time, he was just waiting for film technology to progress to the point where he can do what he visualizes.

lol.. I remember the first JoJo's OAV is the 90s. College friends of mine were some of the first subbers to translate it back then. Not really my thing though.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a question for you all. Who here are really anime fans. Im talking about us who were watching the big names back when they were being fansubbed by private groups.

I have been watching anime since around 1990, 1991 or so. It was before DVDs and before the www really took off.
Yup I had crazy VHS fansubs. No internet and VHS... man those were the days.

I had some VHS fansubs to watch. The anime store that I used to frequent back home, was one of the first local subbers.
I believe I started watching anime again in 1994.

In college (~89-90) when I stumbled upon the small Anime Club and caught Akira and Gundam 83 for the first time it was all over. Back then you had to network and develop connections to get stuff. If you had equipment (a g-lock running on a ancient Mac, s-vhs decks and laser disc players) you were balling. A master (an SVHS copy ran directly off the encoder gear) was the best thing to have. Then came 1st gen, 2nd gen copies, etc. The lower you went the lesser the quality so masters were worth there weight in gold and were hard to come by. A group's reputation was gaiged by the content (quality and quantity of their library). Groups wouldn't want to deal with individuals so clubs, specially larger ones at big schools, had an edge. Translated scripts where also worth a lot and groups would guard them zealously. I remember my friends would do anything they could to befriend Japanese foreign exchange students because access to translators was very coveted and still is. Stuff like JoJo's, Macroos DYRL, Gundam 80/83, Lum, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma, Kimagure Orange Road, Lupin, City Hunter, Early Miyasaki films, etc first got out this way roughly in the late 80s early 90s. Eventually fansubbers began to evolve and change/refine their practices. Now you could send blank tapes with prepaid postage and wait weeks for stuff to come back to you. This was extremely frustrating since many groups had shitty practices: you were shown preferance if you 'donated' to the group (the number of tapes/show you could ask for would be limited), you'd send good quality tapes and receive shitty second and third gen copies, sometimes you'd get the wrong things and occasionally not receive anything at all. So checking out new shows wasn't something you did on a whim, word of mouth and reviews were very influential. This is how Rourouni Kenshin, Macross 9 (?), Tenchi, Marmalade Boy, Rose of Versailles, Childs Play, Five Star Stories, Romance of the 5 Kingdoms, Foushigi Yugi (sp?), etc fansubs were originally distributed in the mid 90s. Video stores carrying Hong Kong bootlegs and renting fansubs starting popping up around this time and it wasn't long till Anime started showing up in blockbuster in the mid to late 90s. But it has been only recently with the invention of DVDs (laser disc collections were very expensive), faster computers and broadband connections that we got into the current model. IRC was king but most noobies got their stuff through a revolutionary new thing called Napster... all around the late 90s. But then an engineer fascinated with P2P networks came out with a better and faster way to distribute data called bittorrent which suited the Anime community just fine and the rest is history. So hmmm.... yeah, you could say that I'm a little bit into Anime. [/rant] |

Watched the Death Note live action movie today, was pretty good although some of the subtitles were waaaayyyy off. I haven't seen much of the actual show but I hear it's a shit ton better than the movie so I'm looking forward to it.

Mazinger Z (original giant robot show) holds a dear spot in my heart since it was the first show that made sure to be home at 3:30 pm to watch. It's hardly the best though and pretty badly dated now.
The slight rain over the weekend finally allowed me to catch up with Bleach. Bokura Ga Ita, Rescue Wings and Akagi are completed so now I have a bit of room to check out new shows. btw, Capeta 30 and 31 were recently released. |

I've always loved anime especially when I was younger I would rent whatever the video stors happened to have and stay up later in the evenings to watch toonami. The past few years I only watched a movie here or there and kind of stayed away from shows. Last year I downloaded every Gundam series I could and watched them all, then I was kind of burned out. Then this thread came along and I ignored it for a bit. Then last week... I started watching Bleach since everyone was raving about it. Just watched episode 111. Wow, I never saw that coming. Anyway I haven't been watching anything else, but, I guess now I can find another series to start in on until the next episode of Bleach comes out.

Speaking of anime I just got a new mp3 player and I started downloading a bunch of songs to put on it. One of the biggest things that drew me to anime was to only the art and story lines, but also some of the best music I ever heard. Heres a small list of Must Download Songs and some great shows.
Vision of Escaflowne - Great anime all the way through a must see including the movie!! Dlownload opening theme (forgot the name) Record of Lodoss War - Eragon has Nothing on this shit! Download "Eternity" and "Fantasia" |
