The new 1.8T is actually 180hp. A new chip (upsolute, arp, giac) will up it by ~45hp I believe. They are very tuneable. Jeff

adey, you talking about Billy Tylaska and his 4dr golf? Yep Golf, not GTI!!!
![]() ![]() BTW as for VW's being slow, my friends 88 GTI 16v with only exhaust and gutted interior ran [email protected] on street tires. My Jetta was only able to pull off 15.8's+. Go to the track and get definite times for yourself before you call something slow. |

I drove a 2003 1.8t jetta tonight. I must say I was very impressed.
Very nice feeling engine, smooth as butter. I drove my "test track" and give it 2 thumbs up for a daily driver. 180bhp and turbo, very nice feeling. They sacrifice a lot of "feel" in the jetta for comfort but oh well. sure felt faster than the 240, and at 3000lbs not TOO heavy either for 180hp 175tq. Damn fine in the corners for fwd 4dr too.

hey, don't be knockin dubs. i may be ostracised for admitting this, i had FIVE (yes...that's correct, FIVE) before switching to my 240 this september. i'm very happy with the change, but i still really like vw's in general (and would still have one if they were more reliable)
1973 Superbeetle - 1641cc engine, kadron header, bosch 009 distributor, and some other little bits. pulled wool like no other car) 1990 CorradoG60 - 1 of my favorite cars ever. was faster than my 240 and just had this vibe about it. i'd still have that car if i hadn't gone to marching band after my sr year in high school and could have afforded to keep it. it's the one i miss ![]() 1988 Scirocco 16v #1 - faded red/pink. power nothing. reliable, good condition, but uninspiring. 1983 GTI 2.1 16v w/twin weber 40DCOEs, peloquin LSD, H&R race kit, straight exhaust, race header, hardly any interior. did 0-60 in an unofficially measured 5 seconds + a little change. ran for about half the time i owned it, PITA in the winter (but oh...the slides in the snow) and was SCARY loud. quite quite fun...it's the one all my friends remember most. i thought the head was cracked and about to take a sh!t, so i sold it, and made 2x what i paid for it. i'm a bastard ![]() 1988 Scirocco 16 #2 - white, neuspeed suspension, moda rims, all in all a car i bought cheap and have been paying for ever since. radiator problems, electrical gremlins, and now it's dead in my parents garage after i gave up and bought the 240. i'm probably going to restore it next spring and sell it to put toward a truck or my car loan on the 240. and new VW's can be VERY fast, thats the only thing they have going for them - sucky suspension, bad build quality, etc. i have about 5k posts on vwvortex.com ![]() that was very long and unneccesary, i'm sorry. but here's a pic of my gti's engine... |

Wow, that's some deep internal Hate. I definitely don't hate em that much. ![]() Something else that might be interesting about crap wagons. I was told this from a friend that used to do body work. Crapwagons have a vacuum door locks! The whole power door lock thingie is opperated by vacuum lines. So everytime one of those lines gets pinched to whole thing goes to crap. I've tried pulling a door lock on one with a line pinch and it took a hell of a lot of effort. |

My last vdub was a 67 convertible that would lift the front wheels while dumping the clutch (when I had the build 1776 in it). Dual dels, Phoenix hide-away header, 009, 041 heads, a bunch more other stuff that I forgot b/c the car was built 10 years ago. Not really a sleeper (cherry red, fully polished Porsche alloys, Recaros, boomin' system, etc.) - but pretty fun to play in. Keep in mind that that was an era when hp was pretty low in most cars - the 100 hp Civic Si's were "pocket rockets!!" Henry's always seemed to have something against VWs. But I think we all recall that something ain't quite right with that boy. |

![]() Ive seen a 10 sec beetle. That was scary. And Ive seen a VW engine lifted out of a car by a single person (dont try). But these were the old VWs and not the new crappy low quality ones. My Gf was looking at the new 1.8ts. They are fast, but I would never own one and deffinatly wouldnt choose it over my 240. And in the end my girl decided she wanted a s14b any ways. And she comes from a family of VW lovers. In closing, watch out for the Vdubs but dust them.

depends how you define 'build quality'
The interior is gorgeous, the panels all fit perfectly with smooth even gaps, the finishes are generally nice.
Then the windows drop down in the doors because the cheap plastic clips in the window regulators give out. Then it won't start because the coil packs crap out. Then it runs like poo because the MAF dies... My roommate has a brand new GTI 337, and it's a sweet car, but, as was said, Quote:

no, i think you would be surprised at the build quality of them. working at dealerships for 5 years you see a lot of old cars with high miles come through, and BMW's are always still solid, no matter what age. just because it's plastic doesn't mean it can't be strong, they are making tanks out of plastic now you know.

Some of you guys are just too quick to talk ****. I think some of the best races I have had were with VW's and they are just BORN for canyon runs.. very potential cars, regardless if they are FWD.. thats just preference for the driver. They are fairly powerful, handle exceptionally, and brake damn well too.. and.. they are balanced.
I've raced `00 VR6 Jetta and `02 VR6 GTI both with manual transmissions, and I have to say they were some of the toughest races I have had. I also raced a `00 WRX and that was also quite difficult. Actually, the 02 VR6 GTI I raced was pretty fun.. the owner and I ended up going on several canyon runs after talking and then got in ANOTHER race with a `01 Audi TT Quattro.. 3 cars all blazing through the local twisties. The interesting thing is, some of you VW owners are talking **** about these cars "killing" a 240.. but my car is an SOHC auto and I was still able to race with them. Our jam through the canyons lasted about 20 minutes, if 240's were slow I would have been lost. All I am saying is that there are too many people who are impressed with figures written on paper and need to focus more on learning how to drive, rather than advertising what they drive. |

In the original post they were talking about grand prix du stoplight... 0-60 type crap. The VR6 was born for that so I responded with a little tongue in cheek shot of my car's fat purple butt... even though I wouldn't street race under any conditions.
My GTI isn't a fun canyon carver or autocrosser in my experience, but it's all preference. Fighting the momentum of all that weight over the nose can be daunting. The Mk4s usually have tons of body roll, too. If you're cool with that they can be rewarding; if you're not you can still buy a slightly better balanced 1.8T model, throw on some H&Rs and a big rear swaybar and have at it. |

I dunno, just about every GTI I have seen or raced has been more of a canyon carver than a dragster, thats for sure. Besides, I would think drag racing would just TOAST those lame ass engine mounts.. they need to be replaced with every gas fillup!

Turn2 mounts! Wheelhop begone!
It's easier to build one into a handler than a drag car, that's for sure. Stock form, though, the Mk3 and Mk4 are just too squishy! |

i have a 91' mk2 GTI 16v.. and yea i like it a lot.. stock 0-60 runs around 7.8 seconds.. but as other people say, its built for the twisties and VW owners prefer having more fun on the "real" roads than on the drag strip.
